How are you finding Manhunt Grim...? (You must have had it for the best part of a week already?)

Runs just peachy on the 360 ** SEE BELOW ** as I'm sure you've found too, although I'll install it onto my trusty old chipped XBox, for that full 40 inch 5:1 surround experience. (Although I suspect the game might get a bit too intense in that format.....)

Mrs AE and AE Jnr not due back until 7pm so I might sneak a quick session in now, thereafter it'll be strictly for when they're in bed I think :D

** DIRECTOR'S VOICEOVER MISSING ON THE 360 UNLESS YOU PLUG A HEADSET IN! **

The director's commentary is a huge element of the game and really needs to be there. Either play on an old Xbox or plug a 360 headset in!

60 fps and high resolution : Of _critical_ importance.

Except, erm, for when its not?

WOAH!

Ignore my last comment, the fucking director's voiceover is missing when played on the 360!

Installed it on my old XBox and it's all present and correct, play it on the 360 and it's missing unless you plug the 360 headset in. (I thought it was a bit quiet when I started playing the game on the 360.....)

Oh well, that settles that then, I'll be replaying it on the trusty old XBox.

(Also, the FMV runs better on the old XBox and the loading times from its hard disc are massively quicker than from the DVD on the 360.)

In an ideal world I'd replay it on PC, not least 'cause I'd get to use keyboard and mouse, be able to play at a super-sharp high resolution, and get a totally solid 60FPS.

However, facts are that it doesn't run on Windows 7 so I'll play it on the next best platform, which is the XBox. (The PS2 implementation always was the shonky version of this game, but then again it was the much weaker of the two consoles in raw power terms.)

The XBox version seems to run at a fairly sharp resolution, I wouldn't peg it at 720p but it certainly looks like 480p, and because it's a slow-paced stealth-em-up the lack of 60FPS doesn't hurt anything like as much as it would in a racing game or an FPS game.

Playing with a pad definitely wouldn't be my first choice, but again, it's a slow, tactical game and I can manage alright with the pad.

I likes my pretties and I likes my PC setup, but I love the games first, the pretties second, and I'm prepared to be pragmatic about things - so I'll replay Manhunt on the old XBox and I'm sure I'll be just fine with it.

Fucking hell, this game still got the moves, even some eight years down the line.

It's not quite the experience it was the first time I played it through, graphics have come a long way in that period, and quite frankly so has the 'level of violence' that games dish out, although I am only a couple of acts in - and my memory of this game is that it was an escalating sense of evil and madness as the game progressed, so maybe that'll kick back in.

But the intensity remains, the psychotic director's commentary is a long way off reaching its crescendo, and already I'm getting back into the groove of trying to set up the 'red level' executions, just because I hate the way the game makes me feel hunted.

Simple little touches like bashing a wall with a weapon to attract attention, retreating to the shadows, watching two foes split up in the search, and then taking them down one after the other - knowing that it's basically impossible to kill them both at the same time in a straight up fight (the AI is VICIOUS in this game), but when you're in stealth mode, the only variable is how far you dare to let the execution-ometer escalate before you make the move.

It's a dirty, grindhouse sort of game, but it's TOUGH, this game will drop you dead in 10 seconds flat if you so much as look at it wrong. That's why I liked it eight years ago, and it's why I still like it now - modern games make brutal carnage easy and joyful, this game kept it hard and ugly.

Strange that it takes a lurker such as myself to say this:

"There is a distinct lack of being excellent to each other in this thread"

I'm not saying who is right or wrong, but olive branches and all that...

Anyway back to manhunt, first game I tested with Win7 and got it running ok although not sure how far I got with it.

I got as far as that bit with the bit where you had to run down a coal chute? and hide a lot and lost interest, lets say level 8. But for atmosphere, only Doom 3 and this are the creepies in a dark room with surround sound on.

Cool thread. :)

I played it a bit more after I posted last night, but I honestly had to fucking stop as it was creeping me out.

Everyone upstairs in bed, still and quiet in the house, just me and the insanity of the game in a darkened room :ninja:

The director gets properly fucking creepy, and the some of the hunters say some weird shit too.

I've never known a game make me feel so vulnerable before.

Thank you TheVision.

I've been a prolific poster in years gone by FF, VPF & VPFF amongst others.

As I havent owned a console since the dreamcast I sometimes feel I have nothing to add to the latest games thread, but AE posted about Manhunt and thats one game I did enjoy but never seem to complete. I do mean to... one day.

Its GTA without cars and just gruesome murder, with a chilling music theme which even Saw couldnt beat. :)

Decent piece about the history of Manhunt and Manhunt 2 with censors in the USA and the UK.

What's important is that since 2012 you two have learned to get along.

I'd be more interested if there was a YouTube clip of plastic bag-based executions obvs.

I never sent him my copy of Manhunt even though he demanded I did so for the good of gaming. :DD

If I get any IOM post it's going in missorts rather than me hiking my way over from Nottingham with my bag.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure my 'bring back Gnomes and Cus' campaign is a non starter too.

Back to the drawing board. Anyone got Chinnys phone number?
