I'm pleasantly surprised by how much of a non-issue gay marriage is turning out to be for a big chunk of the population. Far from causing outrage it seems to be pretty widely accepted with anything from a shrug of the shoulders to genuine support and enthusiasm.

I suppose the advent of civil partnerships wrung all the controversy out of the idea and it's just seen as an increment, albeit an important one as noted, of that. Which makes me wonder how it works for people who're already civilly partnered; do they just continue to be civilly partnered unless they book in for the 'upgrade' to marriage? It was my Parent's Golden Wedding anniversary over the weekend. It was such a lovely occasion - loads of old friends and 4 generations of family - that I didn't have the heart to tell them that is was all meaningless, due to those pesky Gays.

It depends what church, I think. Some are "Yeah, come right in" others are like "We totally would, but the bosses say no" and some are "No, because we've got no real or cogent arguments as to why not since someone let slip that penguins get gay as fuck, and everyone loves penguins, so um, piss off?"

It isn't a case of, "what has been gained" in what the church does. It is a case of what has been gained by law in a legal system that was treating gay people as unequal and undeserving of the same legal and marital status of heterosexual people. So, a fucking lot has been gained.

Before this, gay couples were classified differently by law. They could not say they were getting married, because they were actually getting 'civilly partnered'. People could say 'but you're not married are you, because you're gay and gay people can't get married'. They couldn't call each other husband, or wife. That sentence right there was the basis of segregation in America. Now, children are not brought up in a society where they see gay couples being treated as different by our own government. This is a huge huge deal, and the fact that you don't see that shows that you are very lucky to have never been or never known anyone to have been affected by these laws. Remember it is only in the last twenty years or so that gay people have been given the same rights in workplaces with anti discrimination laws and not much longer since gay people were allowed to have sex at the same age as straight people. Hopefully, with equal marriage, we are on the way to a future where a gay person doesn't feel the need to come out almost every day of their life and gay people aren't verbally abused in the street for holding hands with their partner. How can gay people have equality in society when they don't have equality in the law?

Existing civil partnerships carry on as they were, but I don't think any new ones can be created. It's now marriage or nothing for everyone.
