Died on the 2nd level boss but never even got close to him again because of where the restart position is

Hehe, shooters are pretty much all I play, TBH, and I particularly like the R-Type games, so I've seen most of Pulstar's tricks before, I guess. It's still proving difficult, though!

I've had about ten goes on this, too, which I suppose is a lot more than most Beexers can manage during the week.

Edit: I'd recommend sticking with the 'N' weapon through the first few stages, at least until you get the lock-on laser in stage 3 ('T', I think). Others might seem slightly more powerful, but its screen coverage is pretty invaluable. I think you get bonuses for killing bosses or having lives in stock at the end of a stage, too. In my last run I went from 280k at the end of stage 3 to about 340k at the start of stage 4.

You have about 20 minutes to get your final scores in for this - and a better one from me

Managed the 2nd boss - however i cant see why this game gives you 3 lives , its really a one life game - when you die you'll never pick up enough power ups to get anywhere again

Recovery is always possible in memorisers, but yeah, the respawn points in this one are particularly brutal. It's mainly having to start with no speed-ups that makes it difficult.

Controls:
Joystick: 4-way (up-left, down-left, up-right, down-right)

You might want to re-define the controls since the original joystick was setup on a diagonal (press [TAB] in game to get to the control menu's)

As Gottlieb were more known for their pinball tables the included something pinball related that didnt make it to any other arcade machine (that I know of)

Quote:
Cabinet Information
The dedicated upright cabinets include a knocker solenoid that activates whenever a character falls off the pyramid. The effect creates a rather loud knock inside the cabinet whenever the device is activated. The solenoid is the same type that was used in many older pinball machines to indicate that a free game had been awarded.

I've just tried all the other ROMs to make sure they're working, and Road Blasters doesn't seem to control properly with a d-pad. The car just constantly veers off the road, even if you don't press a direction. The cab used a steering wheel, IIRC, so that'll be why. :p

There ought to be a separate leaderboard for YOG, like the F1 drivers get on Top Gear.

I was using keys and it seemed okay for me - i will double check but it may need additional mappings for a d-pad (the control settings in MAME should probably be set to Analogue).

If it does not work we'll either pull that game totally or i'll pull something else from the nominations list and re-update the files - if anyone else has access to a pad to check how it works for them ?

I think my reign of terror dies tonight - I appear to be absolutely abysmal at Q*Bert.

If RB works fine with the keys, I'll just switch to those. I'll try it in a sec! :) (Edit: yeah, seems fine.)

I have not played it in a long time but some very quick hints :

The green guy that changes tiles can be stomped on
The snake will jump off the edge of the pyramid if its close to you when you take one of the floating disks

I often find it easier to think there is a 'step' between each square , so once you or an enemy starts to move they go through that extra step and it means they are committed to that move (hard to describe but it should help you to see where things are going to go next)

Cheers! Yeah, I noticed the enemies seem to scarper when you use the little elevators. It's hard keeping your eye on all of their movements at once, but I'm sure you get used to it...

Um, do we have a counter yet?

Also, I'd like to make the following submission: the Sunday 11:59PM deadline should be brought forward to 10PM/11PM. I suggest this would prevent last minute submissions or encourage last minute stand offs at a time when I, I mean, we, could realistically have a last crack at a leaderboard score before bedtime.

Thoughts, comments or dissent?

Ooft, Q*Bert has never - and it's fair to say at this point will never - be a game for me. Consider this my first and last entry for this week!

Come and play ! , download the file - double click on q*bert to play the game , press F12 to get a screengrab (or take a photo of the screen with your camera)

If your on a mac only then download MACMAME from here - http://www.macmame.org/ download the rom files from the first post and put them into the ROM folder under macmame and thats it

Sorry chaps I just fucking hate this game, always did, always will, and I ain't even got drugs to power me through it any more like I did with Space Invaders.

Plus the controls don't make sense without the proper diagonal thingy.

Okay Week 3 gives us Cavey's favourite game "Roadblasters" created by Atari in 1987

Keys work fine for this but because its an analogue control set you might need to re-define things if you use a controller

Arrows are left / right and you have 3 buttons - accelerate / normal fire / special weapon (when you collect it)

Collect the green and red spheres for extra fuel

I assume we have to start from Level 1, therefore not getting the cheeky 50,000 bonus for starting on Level 4?

That was how I used to get my highest scores.
