Found out the hard way that accelerating, firing, and turning at the same time is an unfortunate windows shortcut :p

A wired 360 pad will improve your quality of life in this game.

(Or a wireless 360 pad, if you have the required shenanigans to connect it up.)

Bit of fuckery required to get it set up properly but it's worth the effort.

I've never been a massive fan of Road Blasters and thus, never been very good at it. I would have liked more time to play this week but never mind. On we go...

Ed: I don't suppose anyone can show me their "Input (this game)" screen for this? I've arsed up the controls and can't seem to find any default settings.

You get a 50k "veteran bonus" for (I think) doing the levels quickly. It's easy to get one on the first level if you use that booster thingy and don't crash.

You have to start from Level 1 dude!

I wasn't sure what you meant, as I assumed I had, but I see now that the default is stage 4! Sorry. I'll delete it and resubmit later.

No probs dude, I did clarify it with zaphod a couple of pages back :)

A few tips:

1) Get the 10x multiplier ASAP, if you ain't got it by the end of Level 1, start again.

2) Try and shoot as many turrets at the side of the road as you can, they're one of the most valuable enemies. The UZ Cannon makes this pretty easy on Level 2.

3) There's a tipping point where maintaining the multiplier becomes too dangerous, around Level 6 or 7, so just focus on survival then.

4) Don't beat my score.

As for controller setup, I'm using a wired 360 pad, I went into the analogue controller settings and basically dialled the sensitivities right down, at which point the game became controllable if still a bit twitchy. Acceleration on the right analogue shoulder button, steering on the left analogue stick, and then Y and B as the two buttons.

I'm way, way, way out of practice at this game - once you get in the zone with it it's a fucking masterpiece, I managed 213,000 back in the day 8)

Cheers for the tips! At the moment I'm running out of fuel halfway through stage 3, haha! Are you supposed to let go of the accelerator occasionally, or something? I'm collecting plenty of the fuel balls, like...

I'm foot to the floor pretty much 100% of the time, the fuel limits are so damn harsh, slowing down is never really an option.

Don't get fixated on the fuel spheres, the red ones are worth going for but the green ones not so much so on normal levels, on the 'short fuel' levels they all count though.

Your main fuel tank is reset for every level so there's no advantage in finishing with 'extra fuel', it's just the reserve tank that carries over and which you want to preserve as long as possible and not dig into if you can help it.

Still can't get around that 2nd half of the third level on the half-tank the checkpoint gives you. Dunno what I'm doing wrong.

If you're not dying at all and you're not slowing down, you should definitely make it.

Plus the game is harsh but not THAT harsh, you should still get to Level 4 even if you die two or three times.

Are you sure you're hitting top speed?

Yeah, just holding the accelerator constantly, and not dying or slipping in puddles, etc. Weird! The third stage seems to start you with about 75% fuel, and the checkpoint refills it to about the same or less. Not much in reserve at that point, either. I'll just keep trying. :p

Okay - week 4 gets us Sega's Wonder boy

Klov page http://www.arcade-museum.com/game_detai ... e_id=10463

Image
ImageImage

Quote:
Wonder Boy is a little caveman who attacks using a stone hammer, rides a skateboard and picks up other cute items along the way. Each level has four sub levels similar to Super Mario Bros. The real trick is to keep on the skateboard that lets you take a hit from a monster and remain alive, but this is hard to do since Wonder Boy moves so fast.

The object of this game is for Wonder Boy to rescue his girlfriend, Tina, from the evil wizard, King.

Controls:

Joystick: 2-way (left, right)
Buttons: 2 [JumpSpeed/Attack]

PS - they're not golliwogs, they're "Islanders". Er, apparently. :)

Nice! BTW, what do the little angels that stay with you do? I didn't want to risk seeing if they were making me invincible. :p

There was a black one, too, and I think he might have been sapping my energy!

yeah they make you invincible (and allow you to plough through rocks/fire etc for a points bonus).

If you break a "bad egg" (look closely the shell is kind of spotty) you will get a little grim reaper instead that will sap your energy very quickly. There is only a handful of them in the entire game, the one you will need to watch for is during the ice-block area of level 3 - you need to do a tricky short jump to avoid it and a nearby falling icicle.

What's the best way to approach this game? Do you hold down the run button as much as possible or do you take it easy?

You really need to be holding it down as much as possible and getting use to the characters momentum , the only time your not running is either while your firing (but you should limit that) or when your waiting for a lift / moving platform.

Other thing to note is that losing a life at the wrong time is basically game over as you dont get your axe back straight away and there are some areas where its a long journey to get it :-(

If i have time tonight i'll try to do a quick recording which you can play back to see how the first few levels go (although i'm very rusty at this game)

I can't get used to having run and fire on the same button.

Also, in the arcade I used to go in on holiday, there was always girls playing on this game. Therefore, it's a girls game.

You should taken one of them captive and then married her in later life, girls who like video games are quite rare.

Slight improvement, found an extra life on the first level (I'll post if I work out how I did it), messed everything up by dying in some awkward places.

There seem to be a lot of bonuses you can get for throwing hammers in the right place, the extra life is somewhere around where the wasps first appear.

Anyway, <120450>

There are plenty of those bonuses however its pretty random if you get an extra life or a letter (for points)

And for those complaining about the fire and run button being on the same button have you never played Super Mario Bros ?

I just had a go of this on an online emulator for a laugh and within thirty second stumbled across some weird item that made a girl appear and lead me up to the clouds. Once there I picked up the same weird item again and was warped to the start of stage 4 (of level 1). I've played this game when I was young and watched loads of people playing it and never even knew there was a warp item in the game at all. Bizarre.

I assume you were playing the SMS (Sega Master System) version of it - heres the instructions which mention the warp gates (which are not in the arcade version)

I've never seen a cocktail version of this (just the upright) but it looks cool

Controls:

Joystick: 2-way (left, right)
Buttons: 1 [Flap]

FYI If your playing this on any other version of MAME and just get a static or black screen you'll need to load it up - allow it to go through the diagnostics then press F2 , quit out and reload it to start it up for the first time (if your playing the version attached to the first post then I've already done this)
