Your guarantee and rights are with the retailer and not the manufacturer.
If you bought them from somewhere else, Sony don't have to do anything.

Amazon - new, but from a seller who insisted they’d been delivered when they hadn’t (they turned up a day or two later), and got very arsey about it, implying I was lying, and refusing to investigate. Amazon themselves weren’t much use.

So, I’m fucked then?

Did you buy on credit card? Of you did, you are very much not fucked.

Raise it with the supplier, no joy, raise it with Amazon, no joy raise it with your credit card company.

If the seller doesn’t help, go to Amazon as they provide the seller with the platform and if the seller doesn’t act in good faith they may hopefully step in.l and tell the seller to sort it or penalise them for not adhering to law.

Still keep pushing with Sony as well, though.

Edit: Oh, and as Trooper said, credit card of applicable.

Edit edit: sorry, I was posting at the same time as Trooper.

Ta. I can’t do much about returning them to the seller while Sony have them, so I guess I’ll see how they respond first. To be honest, if this was the best they were going to offer, I wish they hadn’t let me go through their whole (rather tortuous) warranty return process. I think I’ve been spoiled by dealing with RHA and their no-fannying-about three-year warranty previously.

I think it’s more that Nik should have gone to Amazon to start with as the first year guarantee is with the retailer. By going straight to Sony he bypassed that process.

Our oven broke down after 5 months and we went to Russell Hobbs and they referred us back to Amazon and we had a new oven the next day.

Under UK law, your contract of sale is always with the retailer who sold you the thing, not the company who made the thing. So seeking remediation for faults goes through the retailer. Sony were under no obligation to do anything; hence the offer of not charging the inspection fee and a discount on a different model is generous.

Post subject:  Re: 1st world problems

So manufacturers' warranties aren't worth a hill of beans? Just the statutory warranty with the retailer? I was vaguely aware of the whole "contract between customer and retailer" thing, but didn't think it mattered whether one returned something within warranty to a manufacturer or a retailer. Otherwise, why do manufacturers have warranty return procedures at all?

E.g. if my iPhone conks out, I take it to Apple, rather than EE, regardless of how old it is. (I once called EE about a problem with my phone and they basically said "you can send it to us, but it's quicker if you just go straight to an Apple store".)

Just to add, I'm not saying I think anyone here's wrong, I'm just curious/confused/asking for clarification. :)

So why did Sony accept my return in the first place, rather than referring me back to Amazon? (I probably would have gone through Amazon if it had been sold by them directly, but as it was from a seller, with whom I'd already had problems, due to her being an arsehole, I took what I thought was the easier option. Now wish I'd never bought the bastard things, as it's stressing me disproportionately. :( )

Probably goodwill and/or to make money charging you a repair fee, depending on what would have happened next had they had the part in stock.

Post subject:  Re: 1st world problems

Ah, last time I had a phone that needed to be returned to the retailer, that had to be done through the post too, so it wouldn't have made much difference at that point. I guess it's different now, with the proliferation of phone shops, although don't they have to send phones away for repair too? Or do they do on-site repairs. I guess what I'm saying is that although the return-to-Apple system isn't perfect, it's not generally worse than returning to a retailer?

(Notwithstanding the time I took a faulty iPhone 6 to an Apple Store, and they replaced it with one with a different fault, which was in turn replaced - on the same day - with another one with yet another different fault. For some reason the hardware quality control really seemed to suffer with that model. Anecdotally, of course.)

I’m confused about the whole Amazon/Retailer thang (mainly because I’ve not done any research) and wonder whether in some circumstances they are legally the retailer when the products are sold by third parties. Maybe their T&C’s would shed some light on it.

Mind you, in my experience Amazon have been very good in refunding/replacing goods without a lot of fuss.

It’s much like eBay in they act as a middleman. If you don’t get any joy with the seller you can raise a dispute and Amazon can then force the seller to perform a certain task, and if they don’t they can issue refunds and sanction the seller, but they will absolutely tell you to try to sort it with the seller first.

Various manufacturers do have agreements with some retailers that after 30 days you go to the manufacturer. Not legal but even Amazon will try it - I bought an LG plasma TV that had that condition. Didn't need it though, it had dead pixels out of the box. But I assumed Nik had bought it from Sony's website - should've checked. Sorry.

Meanwhile, Sony have emailed me to say they're out of warranty. I phoned them up (tried to avoid that, because phones, brrr) and said they were bought in January. They asked me to forward proof of purchase. I suspect this is the point when they say "piss off and talk to Amazon".

In my (futile, I know) defence, they did have the information about when and where they were purchased before they invited me to return them:

Talking of LG TVs, I got the screen replaced on mine last May (under third party warranty), following this. Turns out that the replacement screen doesn't do 3D, even though it's a 3D tv (the picture stays looking "ghosted"/blurred, when wearing the glasses). The fact it's taken a year for me to notice tells you how often I try to use 3D. Got an engineer from the warranty's repair guys coming next week to look at it. Thing is, last time it was gone for over a month - I think I'd rather do without 3D forever than lose the tv altogether for that long again. That'll be an interesting conversation. (As will the fact they left the protective plastic on the glass around the screen, and it can't be removed without removing the screen from the tv, and it bugs me, in that way that only the most minor, trivial things can.)

Oho!

Many thanks for providing your proof of purchase. As there was no proof of purchase supplied with the unit upon arrival, the unit was treated as a chargeable repair. Now that we have received a valid receipt as per the Terms and Conditions of the Guarantee, we will proceed with repair at no charge and the unit will be returned to you shortly.

Well, I guess that's more than generous. Not sure what happened to this though:

Regrettably we are unable to repair the unit as the part to complete the repair is not available

Still, gift horse, happy ending, etc. :)

I bought a 50" TV from the shop with the cheapest price and the men carried it to the car but didn't actually help me to put it in the car so my father-in-law and I had to get it into the car ourselves.

During set up, I had to enter account details about a million times (give or take) for things like Spotify, Apple TV, Stan, Netflix, 'Samsung Smart things' using the remote and on-screen keyboard. In some apps the keyboard is in QWERTY and in others it is in ABC layout.

I’ve got one of those IKEA units, y’know with the telly on top and then your Xbox and whatnot underneath in the square holes. Only trouble is, there isn’t much space back there and it’s screwed into the wall and the heat just pours out modern consoles like a muthafucker. The PS4 Pro sounds like a freakin’ Xbox 360 when it gets hot.

So are there any solutions for things like that? Like little fans or stuff or pipes or what not?

Post subject:  Re: 1st world problems

Unscrew it from the wall and move it forward? If you absolutely have to have it fixed, screw a couple of wooden blocks to the wall then screw the unit to those. Even 1cm will help enormously.
