What is an iced finger?

An iced bun, iced finger, or Swiss bun is a bread bun with a white or pink icing sugar glaze covering the top. The dough may be enriched or simply an oblong bread roll. In some bakeries or recipes, iced buns are garnished with additional sweets or are decorated as ballet slippers or other whimsical shapes.

I can’t believe you reached <insert your age here> without knowing that.

I’ve just my eyes tested and I need new glasses; varifocals for driving and general use, and readers for just reading because the varifocals are annoying if I’m reading for more than a few minutes. I was going to get photo chromatic varifocals because if I wear sunglasses when I’m driving I can’t read the sat nav or instrumentation. When I read up on them, all opticians appear to think they’re not really good for driving as the windscreen stops them working effectively.

The recommendation is to get polarised lenses for driving, but you can’t get them in clear glass, so I’d have to get what are effectively varifocal sunglasses. But then I’ll look like a spaz if I’m wearing them for general use on a cloudy day, or indoors, so I guess I’ll have to get two pairs, polarised and standard lenses.

Get those glasses that go dark in the sun. My mum had some of the early ones of those and they were pretty much dark all the time.

There was a piano going free just around the corner. We were going to get it. The piano moving man wanted £100 which was fine, but it was full of mouse shit and damp and that would be another £150 to fix.

We don't have a piano.

Those are the photochromatic ones that aren’t recommended for driving, and I do a LOT of driving for work.

My dishwasher seems to run out of rinse-aid a bit more quickly than I feel it should, and the little red light annoys me.

My robot vacuum cleaner has an annoying habit of getting stuck on things that i feel it really shouldn't and then sits there beeping annoyingly until someone goes and 'rescues' it.

I feel ya. My new dishwasher is controlled by an app on my phone and the whole time it's on there's a little exclamation mark that says "salt compartment is missing salt" I've never put salt in a dishwasher and have no idea where it goes.

Wookie - salt stops the water softener from getting gummed up.

Also rinse aid, although all in one tablets say you don't need it I've found that stuff (especially plastic things that don't retain heat) seems to come out dryer with it.

There's an old 'Pinky and the Brain' song with a verse where the Brain, in explaining why he would succeed where other would-be megalomaniacs had failed, says he would control everyone's appliances. I suppose in the 1990s the idea was charmingly absurd.

My dishwasher only tells me I have run out of salt and rinse aid after I have loaded it and turned it on. Which is fucking useless.

Don't these do all the stuff I need? There's no way to make the dishwasher shut up about it so maybe I'll have to go back to the old fashioned way.

You could trick your dishwasher that it's always full of salt by filling it with sand.

No. All-in-one tablets allegedly mean you don't need rinse-aid (like markg, I find it better if you use it anyway), but they can't help with the salt thing.

krazywookie wrote:

There'll be a big screw cap on the floor of the washing chamber with a tank under it. Not the outlet, the other one. You buy dishwasher salt (which is massive grain and very pure) and pour it in there until it's full.

Grim... wrote:

This. Dishwashers do ion exchange to soften the wash water, otherwise you get limescale everywhere. The ion exchange doodad gets saturated over time and has to be washed with brine or it'll stop working.

This also means it's actually important to set your water hardness setting so the dishwasher knows how often to sluice the softener.

If you have very, very soft water, Wookie, this might not matter. In Wales my dishwasher barely used any salt. In London we get through loads of the stuff.

Also, it seems to clean things ok, so I wasn't going to investigate further.

Hmm... sounds like I have the wrong idea of what train surfing is.

I thought train/bus surfing was when you try to stand/walk in the aisle without holding on to the seats for support, either for fun or because you have a bagel in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.

That's a middle class version :) the chav version is on top outside!

Don't get me wrong, I have every sympathy for folks who get to a point in their life where stepping in front of a train seems the only solution. It's tragic.

Folks who think it's a good idea to climb on the outside of a train at rush hour, and then run down the tracks away from the police when they arrive, I have a lot less sympathy for...
