Bear in mind those companies aren't really there for an individual to try and get FTTP. They're for 200 people to club together and organise getting FTTP cabled in for a whole village.

Quite. It's not the same thing I'm getting, which is a genuine commercial FTTP product, albeit one that's basically available just as a trial and to only available to 3% of the UK. I'm paying nothing for the install and £50 or £75 per month afterward (for 150/30 or 300/45.)

Is it Google Fibre? You can tell us. We won't tell anyone.

We picked this area [1] well before I realised we could get this! I assumed I’d be picking between 80/20 FTTC or Virgin, same as most of the rest of London. I didn’t think about it for very long when I discovered FTTP was here though.

[1] and by “area” I mean “about five streets”; we’d narrowed it down a long way by the end.

Genuine question but what do you need/want that for? Ours is too slow 16 on a good day, I wish it was just a bit quicker sometimes but it easily streams HD stuff on Netflix etc. I'm not sure how much I would ever notice a difference between all of the speeds you mentioned. I might notice the upload speed quite a bit, I guess.

Unless you're doing really specific things or there are a lot of people in the house you're not going to notice much above 50mb.

Although Steam is pretty fast, PS and Xbox Networks rarely give you a 50mb download speed.

As I write, Radio 3 are playing an orchestral version of 'Silent Night'. It is August and during a heatwave.

EDIT: A dissonant, freakish version of 'Silent Night'. No heavenly sleep here.

What did you have on offer in terms of speed before FTTP became available?

My Parents and a couple of friends now have FTTP, what they all have in common is that they had 2mb or less ADSL before, so BT did the work under the project they have to get the UK to 10Mb minimum (or whatever the speed is!)

Yes the said if I went ahead (like you would at that price!) then some sort of 5 node box would be installed at my house

So I could get other houses to take up the service and be connected in at my node box, I would get £750 rebate for each one of those.

Mostly this. Although not entirely.

The streaming security cameras I want chew up 2 MBps of upload each, constantly. And we are probably fitting at least three. So there is some utility in the fat upsteam pipe. Also I’m getting a 4K TV, so my Netflix streams are gonna get thicc. And I’ve had the odd instance where I think I’ve run out of bandwidth when Danielle is streaming while I’m gaming, even though on paper it should be easily enough. Perhaps I need QoS more than a fatter pipe though.

Edit — also, the extra upsteam is good for offsite backup.

I did only order the 150/30 tier, in a rare show of restraint. I might or might not take that up to 300/45 later.

I have 80/10ish at the moment.

First OpenReach van showed up about 10:30. We’re now up to five vans and they’re still working. Fibre installs be tricky.

Odd that your upload is so slow, mine is 64\18 the upload has always been really high and good, the download not so much.

When turning the shower on, it takes 2 minutes* for hot water to appear.

Toilet has sticking ball cock or something so. You hear the water every few minutes for a second.
Interior needs some lippy and blusher.

We did that on one wall in our lounge, so the stripes go the same way as the curtains on the opposite side.

I have that in a room here. It's getting painted over.

Twiddling my thumb's now waiting for a delivery. I suppose the sensible thing to do is start to paint, and then it will turn up.

There's only wallpaper on the one wall. The others are just painted.

The reason for this was that the inline valve on the feed to the cistern was barely open. Opening it up revealed the filler valve wouldn't shut. Buying a new assembly revealed the filler valve was non standard/been bodged. Luckily we have an outside toilet that works.... Plumber on the way.

Mice are currently extant in the kitchen. Work is in progress to remedy this.

You need to use the old type and leave half a mouse hanging out of one.. It'll serve as warning to other mice to not mess around with you.

They'll be gone in no time.

I’m sure I saw somewhere this excellent humane trap where you smear peanut butter oil in a big bowl. They climb into the bowl for the food smell but can’t get back out due to the oily surface.

I understand the thinking behind the ethical traps, but also fear that mice (and particularly rats) would just find their way back to the kitchen even after being driven for hours and dumped on a remote hill in the Highlands.

Knocked a dodgy looking phone extension box that was hidden behind a radiator cover in the back room and it's taken out our landline.

Luckily my Father-in-law is a phone guy for BAe so he'll hopefully be fixing it tonight after he took a look at it yesterday.

I can highly recommend getting at least 3 cats to deal with the mice problem.
