I did the first insane track today, it was actually a bit easier than I expected! Still took me 80 restarts though :D

This game is a wonderful technical achievement. There's a good write-up here at Eurogamer:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digit ... h-analysis

But in simple terms they've built the game from the ground up to run at 60FPS, and made a whole load of tweaks and compromises around that to maintain that 60FPS, including really clever stuff like altering the refresh rate of the shadows on the fly to keep the 'focus of the action' solid at 60FPS.

(And remember, 60FPS is not 'just' 60FPS, it basically halves the controller response time, which for a pinpoint accuracy game such as this is absolutely critical.)

If all console games were built with this level of technical ingenuity I'd never have a complaint with them (well, apart from keyboard + mouse for FPSers :D) - between this and Pinball Arcade my PC is feeling a bit left out at the minute.

Or it would do, if it weren't just a computer.

That's nothing compared to some of the latter ones. I've got 3 or 4 more to do, two of them I can get to very nearly the end.

Do any of the bike upgrades actually improve the bike or are they are all cosmetic?

I have stuff like reinforced wheels and suchlike available to me.

Yeah, I think it says as much in the instructions somewhere.

That's nothing! In HD I think it was the second last Insane stage that took me 490 attempts. And that's after reaching the 500 limit twice!

I only did the first two Extreme tracks in the first game. I may go back at some point, but I just got horribly stuck on the third one. :(

YouTube videos may help.

Sometimes one simply has to stop playing lest HE SMASH HIS FUCKING 360 UP AND PLANT THE CONTROLLER THROUGH THE SCREEN.

Bastard horrible wonderfully stupidly addictive game.

Getting golds isn't proving to be too much of a problem, it's beating the horrible taunting dots of friendslist doom that is driving me insane.

I will unwind a bit with some Pinball Arcade I think.

The replays certainly help. But not wishing to jinx myself come the Evolution Insane stages, I think this game is a little easier than HD because the 250cc bike is significantly better than the bike in HD. It's much easier to get height with little run-up and it's much more manoeuvrable.

Is the most recently unlocked bike always necessarily the best on all tracks? I'm finding the Phoenix hard to use, and I'm not even sure I actually did all of the bunny hops and stuff in the license test. Think I just blunt-forced my way through it.

Aaaand I think I've just hit the difficulty wall. It will be a crawl to 135 medals, then that will be it for me.

135 medals is pretty easy considering the tournaments and mini games also give you medals. I've done it and I've only silvered about halfway up Hard.

No, its amazing torque is necessary for the later tracks though. I'd use the 400cc one for the easier tracks.

Yeah, was thinking that. Cheers! First 'hard' track seems pretty evil, but I'm sure it'll click once I actually learn to use the more advanced techniques. I just can't seem to do those wee hops consistently.

I've reached a wall of cannot be arsedness with this. After playing Fez this just seems empty and pointless.

Nor me. I remembered how infuriating the hard levels of the first one were. No way was I buying this.

Yeah, you have to do certain things like jump down into different areas and back up into crates and things. Also bail out and grab things. :)

I played the first Trials loads and loads before I got frustrated and gave up.

With this one, I've had it less than a week and I'm already getting to the "can't be bothered" stage.

Lame! I'd have thought someone like you (into retro stuff) would appreciate how rewarding it is to play a difficult game. ;)
