The Pilsner lager kit from wilko is pretty good, as I come to the end if my leaky barrel of it.

Next up is their golden lager kit which I just put on. Super Cascade Hop Thing is in barrel still untouched.

As the ones you like generally taste stronger, wouldn't you be a more likely candidate for "no tastebuds"?

Are you trying to say you're some kind of super taster because you like bland, mass-produced, preservative-laden, pasteurised, flavourless beer?

To be fair, if he can find flavours in it you can't, then he has a point.

Not really, I'm saying that if you like beer that tastes stronger, and I like beer that tastes weaker, it doesn't make much sense that I'm the one lacking taste buds.

Craft lager tends to be really weird. Really fine, tight bubbles, and an almost ale taste, but not quite.

Vienna-style lagers like Brooklyn are quite hoppy and not too far away from an American-style IPA.

First steps taken into All Grain Brewing.

3kg Maris Otter, 200g hops ordered.

Plan: 1kg Maris Otter, 5g First gold 5g Chinook hops done 3 times.

This should make 20 pints or so altogether. Cost per pint is 30p.

Method

Cheers. I was going to do 3 separate smaller batches and have one of gold one of Chinook and one of both but I only have one FV. Equipment for boiling is also limited.

In other brewing news, the golden lager in the FV is going into screw cap lemonade bottles and coming to the cottage. I suspect it will be more of a golden ale than lager, if reviews are to go by.

Brewing postponed until next weekend. In the meantime, I will make a mash tun from a cool box, a water but tap and some copper pipe. It should hold temp well and strain off the wort and sparge water without faffing with a colander and muslin.

As I will have half a packet of yeast left over i might try to make 10 litres of turbo cider from apple juice

Initial research suggests cider could be ready by cottage.

I will make 9 litres by adding half a pack of yeast to umm, 9 litres apple juice and season with 3 teabags.leave for 2 weeks and bottle.

Everyone likes it flat, yeah?

I will try and get some on tonight . I noticed you can buy 5l bottles of water which will make a good fermenting vessel and I can bottle it up into lemonade bottles for the "down the park" vibe.

Have you made Ginger Beer, yet? I think that's about the easiest alcohol to brew and tastes great. Use champagne yeast and leave it a few weeks and 'Hic!'.

I tried lobbing 200g ginger root into the bucket with a kit but it didn't do much. I will think about doing it if I can find a receipe. However, I am not a massive fan of ginger beer. The old Blandford fly was lovely with a good snap of ginger, and something fron the beer festival on Friday so I will find a clone receipt for them. I think I need to crack on with all grain brewing as I need a Christmas Porter and some other things. Annoyingly, after I the all my bottles away because bottling 40 pints is a faff, I find myself considering brewing 20 pints at a time so now I need the bottles (which I can probably get from the cottage).

I made ginger beer the other week using wine yeast. It was great for the first batch, but the second just stank of sulfur.

Hmm... That's odd, I've never known a sulphurous smell. I wonder if the second batch had some contamination?

Turbo cider is go. 9l apple juice, half pack of yeast and 6 teabags into 2 5l water bottles with bubble trap through the lids. Should be about 5% according to maths.

It has weird antiseptic properties, too. This girl I met at a Rock Night said to me whenever she had a prick in her hand she always shortly afterwards put it in cider.

The sugar turns to alcohol. The tea will provide tannins to make it a bit more tasty.

I hope.

The photos are the wrong way around. The second made the first with the exception of pectolase as it was too concentrated and I cba ti dilute it down.

I bought 1m copper pipe and a tap for a water butt. I will drill a hole in a coolbox, stick the tap through and cut thin incisions in the copper pipe. Connect a small length of garden hoes to the inside of the tap thing and on to the copper pipe. Seal end of pipe with muslin and rubber band. Mash tun done.

Will do. Chinook and first gold are the hops.

Now I have the process done once it suddenly is not so daunting but I need to finish my mash tun so MrsA can watch telly box rather than hold a sieve.

I have 1kg malt left so might try a 5l brew in the week with first gold.
