Winamp web services and the site will close down in December. Player will no longer be avaiable for download either.

Behind the formal text on the site they are saying AOL are to blame as they ran it into the ground by doing nothing with it.

Shame as its a great player and one of the first things I found when I started on the web.

Wow, first released in 97!

I can remember downloading hugely ugly skins for it back in about 1999.

Aw, that's sad, but then I've not used it in about five years, I doubt. It doesn't seem like a long time ago that it was the MP3 player.

I used V2.80 with the Milkdrop plugin until my last PC rebuild (2.80 works fine with Win7 64-bit, despite being over ten years old). Had a really good skin for it that I'd used for ten years plus too. (Kalak.)

Finally dropped it in favour of VLC though (I already used VLC for everything else, Winamp for audio was my last holdout).

For years Winamp was simply unrivalled in terms of its vast plugin support. I know foobar2000 has certainly been catching up in recent years, but I wouldn't say I'm willing to dump Winamp entirely in favour of it.

It's because of the plugins that I really don't see the likes of VLC as viable replacements. Here's hoping ArchiveTeam is busy preserving all of Winamp.com as we speak.

BTW, current rumours are that Microsoft is showing some interest in acquiring Winamp and Shoutcast from AOL. Personally though I feel it may be better off as open-source.

Had this on my old PC though never really used it much apart from playing MOD files, I had a Yoshis Island skin to go with it as well. Most of the time now I use Foobar 2000 to play all my CDs and MP3s.
