I can't even remember what game was the straw that broke the camel's back when it came to me finally getting a 360. I don't even know when I did buy it now.

I got the Elite in Sept 2007 with Forza 2, Dead Rising, Brian Lara 2007 and Crackdown.

The first game I played when we got the 360 was Hexic HD.

Prey was quite decent in an old-school way. The multiplayer was awful, though.

It's still one of the best games too. Not a dig at the 360 - I just love Hexic. :)

The only console I've bought at launch was the Wii as that had a sensible starting price.

I bought an XBOX 360 after playing Crackdown at my mates, that and Dead Rising looked excellent. At least one of them was good. Also Gears of War looked very pretty at the time.

Yeah, Crackdown and Gears of War made me want a 360.

The PS1 was the only one I bought at launch (or as near as makes no difference).
The XBox I didn't get until it had dropped to about £120 and the PS3 I bought once I'd got a HD tv to use it with. I got the fat 160gb not long after it came on sale so it was around Christmas 2008.

Gears 2 and Fable 2 were my first games. I pretty much bought mine because I was bored, off work because of my elbow, and financially irresponsible.

Apart from the elbow, that explains my entire console collection.

I'm usually a step or two behind though. I bought a DS this week - but opted for a cheap DSi rather than a 3DS. I think a PS3 is about the only major console I've not owned or own now. I still can't think of enough reasons to get one though.

The only console I've ever bought at launch was the Dreamcast. I'm definitely getting the new Xbox at midnight. For the reasons Gaywood stated. I like getting new gadgets. It gives me pleasure in an otherwise stressful, bleak existence.

Depends if your talking with or with or without a 20GB hard drive :-)

Wikipedia lists the uk ones at £279.99 or £209.99 and the launch date as 2nd Dec 2005 (so it was 6 years ago last week)

Pretty reasonable for a launch day. I'd expect the new one to be less than £300 as well.

So, sweepstake on HDD capacity? I think Microsoft will be stingy and give us 500GB.

I'm unsure. I'd say something like that, but then I was shocked when they released a disk-less 360 Slim at all.

I'd agree with the 500 given that the very latest ones for the 360 come with a maximum of 320 - I also think they gain enough money on overcharging for them that even if they are standard drives you'll need a Microsoft branded one and will not be able to swap your own in (something that Sony dont do for HDD's but have managed to do yet again with the memory cards for the Vita)

You stupid fuck!

I actually think that sounds about right. It's 250 in the S, so maybe 250-500 for the base model with a TB or even 2TB option for the premium console. I mean hell, even Sky/Virgin DVRs are coming with a TB these days. And we're talking late 2012 for release at the earliest...

Then again, the original 360 20GB was small even at the time, so never underestimate their cheapness. Then again again, you couldn't install games back then and XBLA games were 50MB max. Hmmmmm.

Yeah that was crazy, but I think their attitude is: better to offer an option as cheap as possible as a point of entry than not offer it at all. With their expectation presumably that eventually people will have to shell out for a HDD anyway.

Still, I think even the cheapest model will have a decent sized HDD this time around - at least 250GB - just to ensure developers are happy and can count on every console always having a hard drive.

Plus, if this is going to be the generation where the transition from physical to digital really starts to take place, you're going to want people to have somewhere to put your games!

I foresee a PS4 ships with the same dual shock controller but with a pink ping pong ball glued to the front.

As long as I can stream The Zookeeper 2 to my telly, I'm grand. I also hope it will download conversations I can have with my wife right into my brain. Maybe be intoning "XBOX BING THINK". I hope Bing is more entwined in the next box. Like a tapeworm.

The earliest adopting I did of a console was to get a Gamecube before it came out (over here). Switchable from Lik Sang. Most hardcore I've ever been. Most disappointed too. My telly ran it in black and white. Desperately got a component cable thinking that'd improve things, and realised I had no sockets for it in my telly.

So glad I finally got a telly with component sockets. Only nine years later.

You should probably have tried an RGB scart lead. Did you ever try that?

The NTSC Gamecube doesn't have an RGB out. Nintendo replaced the component with RGB for the PAL release. At £140.

The one time I bought an import system, and it was the one console where PAL would have been better. Especially when you consider Wii backward compatibility. My gaming luck.

For what it is worth, it's relatively easy to softmod a Wii to play imported games.

One of the commenters on that piece raises something I've pondered: the value of a touchscreen mounted under the current pad, where the keyboard on the Chat Kit goes. I think that could be interesting.

That's interesting. I'd only quibble with the price. I'm of the feeling that when asked about costs, people should not reply honestly, but with an "honest but less 30%" figure. This'd help the marketing people get a decent price point. But, $299 does seem to be quite good. that's the cost of upgrading a PC to play games on, and the entertainment bonuses it brings makes it well worth a look. Possibly even if you don't play games on it.

Oh, I will be pissed off if they have a cheap one with hard drive smaller than 250gb but the hard drives from current 360s don't fit in it.

I was thinking about this the other day. Kind of like a touch screen, full colour VMU. That's the only thing I can think of (apart from the D pad) that would make the Xbox controller better for the next gen.
