Seeing reports about a large explosion in Oslo, outside the office of the Prime Minister. Anyone got anything more concrete?

Christ, it's blown the brick façade off the corner of the smoking building....And no reports of deaths? Bloody lucky there, I reckon.

Hope everyone who's injured turn out ok.

Not surprised, after those explosions. I'd wail too - they're probably very upset.

Two deaths so far, according to AJE, citing "news agencies and witnesses".

I like AJE and all, but I wouldn't take that as too reliable just yet.

Live feed is discussing the situation now. No real news though, far as I can tell, aside from the usual "police are saying not to stand around in the middle of the street in an area that's just been bombed, you fucking idiots" stuff.

Some talk of a possibly related shooting at a youth club? Not sure what's going on there.

Edit: Ah, yeah. BBC and several other agencies reporting that a gunman attacked a Labour youth camp outside Oslo. A handful of injuries, no confirmed deaths. #block-17" class="postlink">Some people are claiming he was disguised as a cop. Some reports indicate that the PM was due to attend this meeting, but apparently didn't show. Interesting.

Situation is still ongoing - apparently the guncunt is still at large on the island of Utoya, with between 500 and 700 'youths' attending a summer camp, and anti-cunt police are being deployed.

In all fairness, SA, you refrained from calling the Egyptian protesters 'stonecunts', the Libyans 'stuffthattheFrenchdroppedtouscunts', nor the Syrians 'theregoesmycheapskiingholidaycunts'. They guy might have a legitimate grudge against an autocratic ruling family and just hasn't bothered to pretend to tweet about it yet.

Those guys weren't posing as cops so they could run around a youth camp shooting teenagers.

Looks worse than we thought. At least ten kids dead on the island, seven in the city. Witnesses say there might be as many as twenty on the island. :(

Might not be Al-Quaeda-esque fundamentalists, assassinations have occured from right wing extremists in Scandanavia before, and this was a left-wing government and party targetted. In fact I'm reckoning on extreme-right-wing nutjob/s.

Looking like it's one lone nutter. He parked the car and set the timer, he came in a police uniform/changed while waiting for the bomb to go off, watched the explosion and then hitched a lift in uniform to the camp and opened fire up there.

http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comme ... town_oslo/ one chap form norway is keeping it up to date and if you scroll down there are pictures taken by a poster who works in one of the buildings.

The first thing I did this morning was checked the news and it now seem like there were 80 people killed on the island and a far right loon was responsible. In a way I'm pleased it wasn't Islamic extremists though.

80 people? And by a lone gunman? That's just… I don't even know what to use as my next word.

I kind of understand what you mean about being relieved it is not the work of Islamic Extremists. Though I personally abhor the views of both sets of extreme view equally, too many people seem unable to differentiate between Islamic Fundamentalism and mainstream Muslim belief whereas normal citizens of moderate views are rarely lumped in as right wing extremists.

It says on the BBC that the police have a man in for questioning. Is this the gunman? If so, how did they capture him alive? They said the death toll could well rise higher as they search surrounding waters. Many of those shot appear to have been in the water, trying to swim to safety. Also, there may still be bodies in the bomb-hit buildings, too dangerous to be accessible.

I feel almost sick reading the news story.

How absolutely terrifying. Those poor kids :( how the hell does some kill 80 people on his own with a gun? It must have taken a while, I can't even imagine how horrifying that must have been.

People are seriously fucked up.

Apparently he gathered everyone into a group in the guise of a ploiceman, come to help protect the group after news of the bomb blasts, then opened fire whilst all the teens were gathered together. He had a handgun and an 'automatic weapon' (what is that? Something that reloads itself?) and another type of gun, so he seems to have been armed to the teeth.

I just wish I understood how he wasn't killed by police? Maybe he had finished shooting by then? Run out of ammo, perhaps, or there was nobody left to shoot at.

If no one is at immediate risk then police usually try to take them alive. Not only for questioning, but because these sick fucks usually crave 'martyrdom', denying them that is important I reckon, no matter how tempting to pull the trigger on them.

91? I don't like to think about it. How can you shoot down so many for so long without revulsion overcoming you?

Eurogamer thread on this is the worst thread I've ever read, by the way. So don't go there.

Oh, I know and agree with why it us best to capture them alive, for both the reasons you stated, but often in these situations the death of the shooter seems almost inevitable. I'm certainly not saying I'd wished he'd died, I am just surprised. I guess it will become clearer how his capture was managed when details come out. I suppose being on the island meant it took some time to alert and deploy police.

For some terrible reason, though the situation is not related at all, I keep thinking of Battle Royale. :/

Apparently he had assault rifle, handgun and shotgun. Called them to him, then took them out and opened fire. He shot a lot of them on land. Then used the rifle on the ones in the water. Then walked around shooting the wounded in the head. A lot of them were killed on the beach and in the water. Meanwhile privately owned boats from shore sped in and tried to get as many people off as possible, one guy doing three trips.

I don't think there's ever been a worse gun massacre. I'm honestly shocked.

I think someone setting a bomb off in a capital city, then finding time to gatecrash a camping holiday and casually off more than eighty people and not tweeting about it IS a good reason for it to be on the news. It's a black swan moment, for sure, and eclipses the Virginia Tech incident by a factor of three.

It's still one fucking loony going postal. One man.

If you haven't already, watch the clip I linked to above, then take your pick of any of the rolling 24 hour news channels.

Every single thing an experienced forensic psychiatrist says not to do, is what they're all doing right now. Even down to the 'dressed in black' line.

I agree with you on this one, but it's a difficult balance. I'd want to know when something like this happened, but having rolling news—especially if there's nothing to report—does more harm than good.

I just happen to disagree with the 'turn it off and it'll all go away' viewpoint. Humans are intrigued by things that happen which are out of the ordinary, and wish to know more. This is, most definitely, one of those things extremely far removed from the everyday.. It's all very well to tut and blame 'the media' for encouraging such stuff, but I think most people grew out of that line of argument at around 16. People, I think, are interested in it because it's so far removed from what normally happens (for example, it took 8 years for 100 British soldiers to be killed in Afghanistan, a war zone) then people stop, and take notice. I'm inclined to disagree that making it 'the news' encourages other people to pick up thier guns and start shooting whatever ideological group is their mortal enemy, I think cognitive bias plays a part here, and expectations (for example, last week 16 Pakistani security people were killed by the Taliban in the Tribal regions, they made a video and everyting, nobody really blinked because 'stuff like that happens over there'). What makes it doubly interesting, is that Norway is possibly one of the dullest places on earth, and we can only really think of Heroes of the Telemark, whaling and Ole Gunnar Solskjær winning the European cup for Manchester United when we have to recall something about it. No smart money would have gone on that place being the scene for something tragic.

Yes, I just watched a bit of the news last night, and it had already become clear that there was nothing more to report on other than interviewing shocked bystanders and getting "reactions" from politicians and such like. You still feel bound to watch it though :(
At the end of the day - just another nutter, but like with school shootings chose an easy target and caused mayhem and murder for far too long.
