Ooh I just saw Lave's time on the first track on Time Trial. Excellent.

Also I just shaved 2 seconds off my time by using the wheel. Interesting.

Up for some Tuesday night racing next week for sure.

I'll be to for racing next week. Isn't Nintendo's e3 thing next Tuesday as well.

I've uploaded a time for Thwomp Ruins, looks like I'm the first one.

Yeah, I quickly tried out timetrials last night. Had one attempt and uploaded the ghost.

It was really fun, but going to focus on getting medals first I think. (But I'll give Thomp a go)

Also: my wife (who has been better than me since we started playing Double Dash together) beats me consistently using the wheel in this (whilst I use the pad). Lots of spods witter about it not being a 'proper' controller, but it definitely is for MarioKart.

I was practically in raptures with it last night (to the extent that I played too long, missed eating my tea and went straight to bed as I had the usual early start for work this morning), it's just so perfect, so Nintendo.

As folks may be aware (lol) I'm quite into all my graphical pimpery and shinies, and yet here's a game running at a bog-standard 720p with no anti-aliasing (but a solid 60FPS), and by crikey it's just eye-poppingly gorgeous, track after track I was like 'Bloody hell that's lovely', the imagination and creativity of the track design is spectacular.

The gamepad is ace too, showing you a track map and leaderboards during races, and then full screen replays after the race that show on the pad as well as the big telly.

So yeah, you'll like it I reckon.

It's the most 'next gen' game I've ever played.

Also, you can play entirely on the pad if you like Hearthly. Which is really useful when, halfway through a cup, your SO wants to watch the news.

Just tap the top right.

Certainly on the Wii version, I found the wheel to be a slower d4わcontrol method. I'd be surprised if this cjanges on this version.

It'd be a brave woman indeed who tried to tell me to stop playing a game to gain access to the telly for herself.

Besides which she's got her iPad and several computers to choose from if she wants to watch something that much :D

Fun japanese facts: the use of the わ particle at the end of sentences is done only by women because it makes you sound extremely feminine.

You girl.

Edit : Just to show I'm not making this up: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/wrapup4.html

Sickeningly female, apparently.

It's open to all and will make up the numbers with easy AI.

Not quite sure how else it works.

I had a go at the MLCoCG Time Trial last night and couldn't see anyone else off here's times / ghosts. Stupid Nintendo.

Also got absolutely fucked over on Rainbow Road at 150cc last night. Was in 3rd on the last corner looking like securing a first place in the tournament when I got hit by a shell and virtually the rest of the entire field shot past me.

I was infuriated and amused at the same time. Like when a girl feels when she sees my cock.

It adds the replay to your list of favourites in the Mariokart.tv section.

When did you take the times? I spent nearly a hour late last night trying to beat Trousers but deleted the miiverse post because of a spelling mistake and now I wonder if it deleted the ghost as well.

Takes you off the racing line too much hunting for them I think. Or is the boost from the coins enough to justify the wandering?

I'll try it tonight.

I worked like mad to get that 2.07.

I don't think I can improve it until I work out which character combo is best for me.

It seems they are so well balanced there are no 'better' let alone 'best' so I keep flipping between weight classes etc.

Still confused by what I want with handling and grip...

I want to compete in the thing that romanista is posting times for.

What is your Nintendo ID thingy? You will need to go in to the time trials, select your racer then the track, then More Ghosts and there will be a mix of best times, close times to your time and friends times. Select the time you want to download, back out and then select Race against Ghost and select the ghost from the graph on the right. Simple! :nerd:

I have re-upload my time of 2:03.426 so hopefully that will pop up...

2:04.062 - I'm coming for ya Trousers!

The coins definitely make a difference, it's pretty easy to get a bit ahead by the end of the first lap against Trousers' ghost by ignoring the coins, but as the second lap goes on that tiny little bit of extra speed gives him the edge. Ss yeah, you deffo want to be hitting 10 coins on lap two.

My 2:04.062 ghost is uploaded.

I just managed to unlock Mirror Mode. I think I've played it for about 15 hours in total so far.

Utterly and completely worth every penny.

I'm still spotting all manner of incidental detail and beauty in the tracks that nobody else but Nintendo manages.

Author:  Hearthly [ Sat Jun 07, 2014 16:42 ]
Post subject:  Re: The Mario Kart Club of cunning gentlemen

Dammit I've collected 700 coins now (i.e. loads of vehicle part unlocks), I've got gold (many with three stars) in all 50cc and 100cc Grand Prix, and am halfway through the 150cc Grand Prix - AND I STILL HAVEN'T GOT SLICK OR CYBER SLICK TYRES. (Not that the golds make any difference as they just unlock characters, not vehicle parts.)

Make no mistake people, you ain't gonna beat Trousers' time unless you match his loadout which is one of the super heavyweight drivers (Bowser/Wario/etc), with the Circuit Special kart (or one of the other speedboost karts) on Slick or Cyber Slick tyres. (Glider doesn't matter so much, just choose one of the ones that has the slight speed boost property.)

Now let me be clear here, he drives like a man possessed and is clearly showing off some serious skills, but don't bang your head against a brick wall trying to beat his time until you can at least match the kart composition he's using.

Yeah it's absolutely wonderful, I think it was Dr Lave who said a couple of pages back that it's the most 'next-gen' game he's seen yet and I'd tend to agree - some magnificent sights to be seen on every single course. (Even just the detail on the karts and characters is exquisite.)

Frankly I'm appalled that on both XBoner and PS4 it seems to be acceptable to kick out racing games that lurch around at 30FPS (and less) with the input lag and general jerkiness that entails, (I honestly don't think it's possible to 'zone' on a 30FPS racer), and yet here are Nintendo kicking out a solid 60FPS and amazing good looks on the 'underpowered' next-gen console.

I also love that they've managed an instant reload, which is critical when you're really trying to chip away at a time trial record and you know that any minor mistake fucks the run and you need to start again. No looking at a loading screen, just straight back to the starting line and off you go again.

I felt a bit bad when I shelled out £290 on my Wii U bundle, but a few concerted sessions on Mario later and I already think it's worth every penny, and I haven't even started on Pikmin 3 and Super Mario 3D World yet!

950 coins, still no slick/cyber slick tyres....

WATCH OUT FOR TROUSERS HE'S A HACKER.

Still it is giving me a sort of dual-challenege in that I can work through the Grand Prix I haven't yet got three gold stars on, and try to finish each race with ten stars so that I get vehicle part unlocks as often as possible.

Thing is though it doesn't feel like a grind, the relatively small number of tracks means there's a constant pleasure in learning each one a little better, and the game is just pure joy to play anyway.

Except when it does that cheaty shit with the AI getting the super mushrooms and suchlike when you're way out in front, some of it you can mitigate but sometimes it does get rather blatant.

Still doesn't stop me going right back for another attempt though.
