Many years ago, when I was an IT Administrator in the civil service, our network ran on Novell Netware, and one of the useful features was the Broadcast Message. This allowed administrators to send a pop-up to appear simultaneously on the screen of everyone who was currently logged in and which would be on top of whatever was on their screen. It was also an open plan office, so when my colleague sent this one out, we could hear the gasps and laughter across the whole floor as it hit the screens. It should be noted that the trolley in question was white and not as described by my fat fingered friend.

It was great for a clearing a computer lab at the end of the day.

More fun was the command to remotely toggle the CD drives eject state.

I built a little program in VB6 that would sit and listen in the background for commands sent from a client program on another machine on the network.

Said client program was a music keyboard with computer keys labelled on them (a la OctaMED) and it would play the corresponding sound on the remote PC’s beeper.

I then added the ability to send RTTTL ringtones to it.

The confused looks on the students and teachers as some of the college machines started playing the Batman theme or Axel F despite no-one being sat at them was most amusing.
