I totally won my first ever multiplayer game, Trooper got nailed, he went down in flames, he got decimated.

No, wait, the other one.

I'm not sure it's 'clicking' for me yet, I think I need to play more games.

EDIT - Meh, logging in timing out again.

Heh, you mean this game? ;)

I find it useful to go back and watch games i've lost to try and understand why.

A few tips, as far as I understand the rules so far.

If you are ducking behind cover, you can't shoot over it.
Shotgun dudes are faster on the trigger than anyone else.
Cover makes a huge difference, but only light coloured objects count as cover, corners don't.
Aiming and standing still also make a huge difference, so if there are two machine gunner going at each other, if one of them was aiming, standing still, and behind cover, they will always win.
Keeping your squad together may work in real life, but in this game just means you are more likely to lose them all against a grenade or rocket.
Sometimes the best move to make is no move at all...

Love this game! It is great. Really frustrating and tense over 5/6 turns which can take hours!

It's a bit special this isn't it? Played through the tutorial and first mission but then had to abandon my mac when the GF returned. To build an ikea wardrobe. Which has been hell.

Can you give us an updated 'Trooper's Brief Guide To Frozen Synapse' at some point please?

I absolutely ragged the arse out of Naked War back in the day and eventually wrote a 6000 word FAQ for it, point being I didn't mind any of my opponents knowing everything I knew about how the game worked, and I really wanted to see how that same information was used against me, i.e pure tactics and strategy. (I suppose the natural example is Chess, where both players know every detail of every rule ahead of the game starting - it's just a battle of minds.)

I'm not asking you to write a 6000 word FAQ :D But if you can give a few bullet points like you did a few posts back, that would be cool - I'm pissing away far too much time on GTAIV at the moment (the PC version is a revelation on a decent machine), but definitely need to get my arse into gear with Frozen Synapse.

Sure :) In addition to what I have learnt above, a few random thoughts.

For the shotgun guys, they are the fastest in the game, I was playing it cautiously to start with, and still do with the other types, but for the shotgun I found it best to be kamikaze. I find charging directly at where you expect people to be is a great tactic.
If you are being fired at on a pause, cancel all orders and switch directions, staying the firefight will only get you killed.
If you are against a rocketman, stay in open ground, they can't touch you.
In fact, open ground is not always your enemy, a stationary aiming dude in open ground will quickly pick off the enemy if they are stalking around and pop into view.
Having said that, I pretty much always keep moving, unless I have a good cover postion that gives me a good field of view over a large portion of the map.

This game bloody rocks.

I do think this is going to be one of those games where I plod through the campaign before going online - by which point you'll have wandered off. Talking of the campaign, it's quite an interesting setting and plot. Good stuff.

It's nice to that it's a Mac game too.

I know, originally I had planned to fire off a grenade at you, but simulating that meant a shot to the head. As long as you keep moving against a sniper, then you can quite often get out the way. If you stop to take a shot at one you usually die :D

I was going off Trooper's advice that sometimes the best move is no move at all :D (The same principle held entirely true in Naked War, albeit you could see your opponent standing around doing nothing.)

I figured you'd focus back in on the centre once it became clear I'd flanked you so I reckoned I'd leave him there to pop out at an opportune moment, besides which the machine gunner guys seem to do very badly against shotgun dudes and cleverly lobbed grenades :o

EDIT - I regularly check the pools of blood on the floor against the number of troops that started the battle, to make sure there's not one I haven't 'seen' for a little while.

I have this! It badly needs to integrate with your Steam friends list and stop this pissing about with everyone scattered across multiple servers, but otherwise it is acebest. XCom meets Defcon meets Syndicate.

Post subject:  Re: Frozen Synapse -- "Rebelstar Raiders for 2011"

This seems the sort of game we should be able to run a tournament or league with relatively easily, especially as anyone can watch any game that has completed, if you have the number...

So, who would be up for that? Names please if you are.
What game modes, just extermination? I quite like Charge? I'm not sure if anything other than extermination is a bit too one-sided though.
Single match each round? Best of three?
I assume Dark matches rather than Light, as Light matches are shit.

Author:  Grim... [ Thu Jun 02, 2011 16:38 ]
Post subject:  Re: Frozen Synapse -- "Rebelstar Raiders for 2011"

I'd say all Dark Extermination best of three, on a symmetrical level (as sometimes, just by chance, things can be really one-sided).
It'd be fairly interesting if we all used exactly the same level for each round, actually.

Anyway, in.

I'll be up for some kind of BEEX championship, so add my name to the list.

However, I think we should make sure the games are as balanced as possible - not sure what's built in to the game to enable that to be the case.

I shall investigate.

I'm thinking of doing it as a league though, everyone plays everyone over the course of the championship and each match is a best of three, so that should help on the balance issue. unless you are really unlucky.
It'll take longer to run is the only worry, but always having games on the go might make it a bit more successful than the WWF tournament, which seems people forget they are even taking part! :D

I know it is possible to create levels in the advanced setup, hopefully it is possible to save those levels in some way and send them to everyone? Otherwise it'll either have to be an agreement at the start from the two players that they are happy to play the level as generated, or a play it regardless rule.

It's not ideal, but it's certainly possible. Your saved levels are stored in psychoff/data/userLevels/[yourlevelname] so I assume we can just call them round 1, round 2, etc and share them via the forum?

If it's over enough games then random chance should take care of it over time.

I'm not fussed really, I just enjoy playing the game so my vote goes to whatever makes it easiest to run and gets the most people taking part.

If you get a really bad starting position then losing is no kick in the face, and if you win then self-satisfaction is the order of the day :D
