A buddy of mine was the sole overnight security guard for an abandoned asylum. The only place with power was the outside lighting and the security room. The toilet was on the second floor, so you had to take a torch. I went down to see him there a few times. Fucking NOPE.

If he was on his own in an abandoned building... surely the toilet was wherever he wanted?

It was abandoned but owned (hence the security) - I don't think they'd be terribly pleased if the place was full of turds.

So one of the Epsom cluster. Heh.

I have friends who were into urbex of abandoned asylums. Mainly Coulsdon, but also went to Netherne (once, refused to ever go again, never explained what the Netherne incident was. Apparently it was shit your pants creepy though.) Once they closed, I think they checked out the various Epsom buildings. It amuses me to think that your friend may once caused a certain amount of pant wetting far for them.

Always used to love hearing the stories, some are damn creepy though. No way I could've joined them, would've given me a heart attack.

Just had a few days up in the lakes, really nice dark skies where we were, so I thought I'd try and take a picture of some star trails. You can make out the plough and see how the two stars at the end point towards the pole star which I couldn't quite get into the shot whilst keeping the The Old Man Of Coniston in the frame. I think this was about a twelve minute exposure:

Considering it was pretty late and I was quite a few drinks deep by this point I'm happy with how it turned out.

Need to start using my camera more again. Phones are ok for taking snaps but pretty wank really.

How does the Note 8 compare with the 7 Plus camera wise?

I had a picture I took on plus printed out at Tesco of my son looking cute in the local woods and framed for my mother in law. Was very impressed at the colour quality given it was from a phone.

Would really like to get into SLR etc but have no time, also find with kids the phone captures the "moments" far better as you have it on you most of the time, so just base my phone choices on the best camera these days.

Sadly work just pulled any and all Android phones from the catalogue so have to stick with Apple

Thanks! There's some making lemonade out of lemons in there. We didn't have the best weather; October in Scotland is dicey enough without a hurricane landing during the trip. But I kept the camera handy for occasional breaks and was rewarded with some impressive God rays. As our very own Gill said to me, moody skies suit Scottish landscapes.

We flew to Inverness, went to Aviemore for the day, then drove to the Isle of Skye, down to Oban, across to Gleneagles, and finally to Edinburgh. This turned out to be a pretty good route as the drives between those places are very beautiful and pass lots of interesting stuff like the waterfalls at Killen.

I was up in the Lakes at the weekend, staying in Conistone. It was freezing, standing up was nigh-on impossible on top of the Old Man, but the light was probably the best I've seen for a long time. Only had my phone with me, but I was very pleased with some of the shots I got, especially given I had to take my gloves off to use the dam thing.

I've been learning some new techniques having bought Capture One, which is at once more complicated but also immeasurably more powerful than Lightroom. It does a really job on Fujifilm raw files as well. Naturally good light and a good subject is what you're after to make any image, but being able to add layers to an image, and the powerful stuff you can do with combining masked layers and colour shifts... wow. It's made me feel pretty excited about taking portraits, as the mood you can work into them without a proper lighting rig is really something. I'm looking forward to really cracking open this program and seeing what I can achieve with it, only got it a month or so ago and already I'm thrilled. The only thing is you have to be careful as it's hard to get a final impression until the very end, as unlike Lightroom, you can't easily save snapshots or jump forward and backwards, and the final image preview tool is a bit archaic. But judging by the files this thing is giving me, I can forgive that!

Continuing to try and develop portrait skills, so here's a couple of early edits of a shoot I did on Wednesday. These are taken as part of promotional work for a couple of pretty talented dancers who will be playing a Glasgow dance festival soon. It helps that they're ridiculously photogenic. Fun fact! The first location we shot at was a courtyard in Cardiff where we heard the most incredibly loud rich-contralto sex-noise emanating from wide-open windows. It was practically deafening, and at half one in the afternoon too! We exchanged looks, briskly walked round the corner and burst into laughter. Broke the ice nicely.

Naturally the age-old struggle over black and white versus colour. I'm slowly figuring out Capture One's strengths and weaknesses, but when you give it a clean file - no higher than say ISO 1600 - damn the detail and pop you can get out of it is amazing.
