Thanks man. That was my fave of the day, too. Kites are a bugger to take good pictures of. They look magnificent, all fluttery and huge, but when you take a picture, they look tiny against the huge sky.

Remembered I took this on my phone last Friday. The focus is off but I do like the light. I'll have to go back with my proper camera and try again.

Should be able to see into that bog window if I take my zoom 55-200 and stay low.

Agreed - that's a bloody good pic. I can almost see the Teutonic Knights riding off into battle.

Took pictures this morning of what I thought was a bloody huge hornet! I was really cagey taking pics of it as I tried to get as close as possible. Knowing that hornets are rare in these parts I decided to do some research and now I've discovered it was a Lunar Hornet Moth! Bloody trickster had me fooled, stunning creature. Cant wait to see how the pics have turned out tonight.

Edit: It's actually a Lunar Hornet Moth :nerd:

Went to the park with only my 35mm 1.8, God damn this thing is sharp. Took lots and lots of pictures, pared it down to three. Still not sure about them because I've been staring at so many ducks I've lost perspective.

Some photos taken at Portmeirion last week.

That light is excellent. Love how the figures are so dark against the sand.

Yes, it was a beautiful day and the views across the estuary were wonderful. The light and shade on the far hills was constantly changing and with the tide out there were plenty of opportunities to include distant figures.

Just noticed the canon popping in from the right! Did you get any shots of that included more?

Yes, I took around 40 and I'm sure I have one with more of the canon and the stone boat, but they're at home and I'm at the office. I'll have look tonight.

Yeah, that last one is excellent, Warhead. Particularly like the really angry looking clouds. I'd have liked to have seen it with a polariser on, really bring out those light edges.

Quite.

Oh yeah, those pics I took of the Lunar Hornet Moth were disappointing, hopefully I'll get the chance to find one again in full sunlight. Had to open up the macro lens to get enough light in but the detail/depth of field suffered for it.

Thanks

But :belm: I had a polariser in my bag, but didn't think to use it. I think I had my UV filter on some of them. It was more of a casual stroll with my camera and my better half, than a photography outing.

I like those beach shots, Warhead, especially the one of the man with watercolours. Man, I love Portmeirion.

I was asked to take a few pictures of the £100k Steinway piano we have here, but somebody's pinched my work tripod so I had to do it hand held. Not too happy with it. Any tips for shooting shiny black pianos under theatre lights?

Hmm, that's not so easy on the eye but as a subject it definitely has potential. Did you try other points of view? I'd either go lower so I was level with it, cutting out more of that nasty floor or closer and looking down on it a little more. Either way, you need get more of that nasty floor out of the shot. Perhaps get closer to that near corner, so the centre of the shot is of the lid and insides, but leave enough room so you can get the keys on the left and the curve of the body in on the right.

That's all I got.

Also: Is there nothing you can do to soften the light? Perhaps a single spotlight with some kind of diffuser on it? Other than that, try the camera 'scene' settings perhaps?

That really is all I've got now.

Yeah what flis said, the floor is distracting (you could always take it out in Photoshop afterwards). Perhaps get some detail shots too of just the keys (and logo) and of all the hammers and strings inside. Maybe take some from the view of the player too.

The reflection under the lid looks great. Use that to your advantage.

Thanks for the advice. The floor is a problem. It's a temporary dance floor laid over our beautiful polished wood. Lights can be softened significantly. I wish I had my tripod. :(

Do you have anything else to rest your camera on? You can always set the camera to shoot after a delay (well you can on mine) so you can place it on a stool or step ladder.

Someone put a baby grand on our (permanent) dance floor before. Rage and damaged feet ensued...

I agree with the detail shots and lower angles. Also the photoshop idea for ironing out floor inconsistencies, though those sunken feet could pose a challenge.

Fourth is my fave, I like the pattern and the soft warm glow. As for the third, do you have lightroom 3? You could add a bit of highlight recovery, and then up the black channel to create more of a darker richer colour on the keys which would balance it out a bit more.

Roberts & Karanka

Third Floor Gallery, Ben Robert's damn fine new exhibition opens, entitled 'The Gathering Clouds', a study of the economy collapse in Spain and the scarring of the landscape of deserted semi-built tourist hotel complexes that followed. Here he is with Joni Karanka, one of the founders of the gallery. Alcohol and fun ensued and all was peaches and gravy.

Ben Roberts looks rather like McNulty from The Wire, I reckon. Opinion?

It's a little bit of a shame you hadn't been a tad bolder and got some shots of the expression of either performer or audience. The feeling of the scene isn't immediately apparent as mostly it is the backs of an ambling crowd.
