I have a work colleague who has an Alfa 147 (I'm surprised he manages to get into work every day, but that's another story), and he's asked me about this fuel saver. I've never heard of them before, so can't advise whether they're a complete con or worth a look at. Does anyone have any experience with these or should I just tell him to keep well away?

I think fuel magnets have been pretty comprehensively shown to be bullshit.

Like Alfas. Beautiful to look at, a bitch to keep on the road. Brother in laws Alfa spends more time in the garage than on the road.

I have a load of oxygen free gold plated cables here and a mains cleaner if he's interested.

It's all a load of rubbish. Still, when the Alfa disintergrates at the first sign of rain at least the fuel saver will be left intact.

Rule of thumb: don't trust an ebay page with centre-aligned text to give you any information of worth. Or any ebay page, really.

All fuel saver devices are total crap. Dan of the excellent website DansData.com has written at length about why they don't work, if you want some links to back this up.

Well I'd never heard of them before. I wouldn't buy such a device, so I thought I'd ask for some help on his behalf.

No need to pour scorn on someone for wanting to find out about something before buying it.

If something sounds to good to be true, it usually is.

Mythbusters did a lengthly bit about them as well. Some even made the car use more fuel.

Are you sure they hadn't simply fitted it backwards?

If it's so good why not used by car industry?

It's a very good question! Why big car companies are not interested in all benefits achievable by using magnetic technologies in cars? But the real question is: would they profit on it? Think about it, who would profit? Customer would - of course! Customers will spend lees on fuel, less on repairs and spares! Who would loose? Those who produce spares do a service and those who sale fuels and those who put on and collect fuel taxes! Permanently cleaned engine means a clean spark plug, less damage to a catalytic converter, less overheating as a limescale is removed from an engine, less harm to a radiator etc... At the end of the day we can see that THEY would loose a lot of money on servicing and spares selling. An american company producing fuel magnetizers made a simulation for 10% savings on fuels consumed by all Federal Agencies in USA. IRS would loose 12bln $ on fueltax per year...

What about the car company wanting to boast that their car gets way more mpg than other companys' models? Or did your winking thumbs-up chimp not think of that?
