If its contents though isn't it predicated on the stuff you own rather than the size of the property? I'm guessing you own more high value items than your mum even though she's got a bigger house.

Not that I'm saying that's still a fair charge or anything as I've no idea, just commenting on why there might be a disparity between you and your mum's costs here.

I do have a bike on there worth a grand but that's it. I had one on there last year worth £800 but sold it. She did say when I changed the bikes it would go up, but I am not paying that. I will phone them tomorrow to see what I can do, and if they persist I will have to shop around. Security here is good. Three doors to get in. The only way you could really burgle the place is from behind (ooer) and even then you would have to climb three 10ft brick walls. Then you would have to get out again. There really is no way in through the front unless you climbed along the window ledge and then broke the window open without falling to your doom. there are no alley ways or breaks in the front of the entire block.

The Square footage of this place doesn't help. It is big I gotta admit. But, that is mainly due to the very high ceilings and large living room. Lots of space wasted tbh.

Genuine question: did the insurance folk say that the size of the place impacted the cost of the policy? I've never heard of that, but I'm hardly well versed in this stuff so am just curious.

An increase of £200 in the worth of your bike shouldn't make that size of difference. Hell; I'm surprised it would make any difference as that's chicken feed in insurance terms.

TBH I have a distinct feeling that me saying "I've never done this before so I don't know what I am doing" led to me being sold a policy that in all fairness I don't really need. Kinda like that time I phoned BT to ask a question, got sold a contract for broadband and then they called back an hour later saying I would have to pay an extra £250 because the salesman didn't realise my ex had put a hold on the line so I would need a whole new line. Thankfully my social worker stepped in, phoned them up and I ended paying nothing for two months.

Which was nice.

This is all new to me. I only started living alone last June. I suppose I will have to force myself to learn, but it's hard. It's all very scary to me tbh. I really hope MIND can sort out sheltered accommodation for me. There's just so much shit you need to know, and remember, when living alone.

Also, it's definitely worth checking Compare the Market even if just to get ammunition for your conversation. I've just gone through it and it does ask question about the location so it might be something there that explains the jump.

Just saw your last response there. Definitely go through the Compare the Market questions and see what it says as it doesn't require talking to anyone and should give you decent quotes so you know is where you stand.

Well I phoned back when I got my orange bike. TBH? I could have left it the same as they were both the same name (PK Ripper) but I thought no, I will be honest. Any way I asked if my policy would go down she says "No it will go up" I say "Eh? why?" she just says it is the way it works. Then she said "Maybe you are better off switching". I thought "WTF??" so I say "So you are prepared to lose my business?" she says "It's just how it works".

No wonder I get so fucking confused. I mean, BT told me I have to pay £48 a month. Then they tell me that if I don't switch at the end of the year it goes up to nearly £60.

Seriously? what the fuck is going on with the world. Fookin bonkers !

So of course I will switch, but you can't switch back to BT lol. Asshats.

Will try CTM tomorrow. I will let you know how it goes. Maybe I should get my care worker around here though, so I don't get confused half way through like last time. There was no option for "disabled" and if you said you were unemployed they refused to fucking sell you insurance. So I put "other".

In all seriousness jc, if you have an iPhone check out the link I posted. No contract, very few questions, just pay for what you own and want insured every month. It might fit what you need?

Plus if you ever have a problem I expect I can get you to the front of the queue quite easily ;)

Wait, it's a company that only sells home insurance to iPhone owners? What the fuck!?

I'm not sure I'd trust a company that made such hilariously awful business decisions. "Shall we start with a good website that literally anyone can access and do specific apps after that? Nah, let's leave potentially shitloads of money on the table by only catering to a single device by a single manufacturer!" Genius.

Hmmm, unless it's a way to artificially restrict the number of customers they can get while their business matures. Which would work in the short term, but seems like a really bad idea in terms of frustrating people away and stifling the business in the long terms.

That's certainly an opinion :) there are good reasons why that wouldn't have been the right way to go though.

Yup, that's a bull quote.

A price comparison site would give a better quote, as they're rather having to compete with one another there, but not so much here.

Yup, my mother owns a 3 bed house and it's less than that and she has accidental cover on everything because of her arthritis.

I went on Compare The Market and chose Legal and General. It wasn't the cheapest (that was £100 a year) but it was half the price I am paying now (£13 odd a month as opposed to £25). So I listed the bike I take out of the property and was happy enough with that. Will phone Lloyds in the morning and tell them to do one. They also had an option for disabled, so I didn't have to lie. Oh, and I was honest about the bike that got pinched a couple of years back too.

Given the company only started last year, I suppose we'll see how good those reasons are. :p

Yeah. The dude upstairs got into a drunken fight with his mate and all hell broke loose. The police came around, kicked in his door and took him off in a meat wagon. Only thing is they left the outer door open and it was like 4 in the morning so I didn't get out of bed to check. Bike was locked, but not locked to anything. I asked the landlady about it after she says no, then the bloke in the top flat fixes a lock to the wall and puts two honking great bikes worth about 50p there.

Mind you, after the lucky escape I don't think I would leave another one there locked to the wall or not (insurance company initially refused, but I think when I broke down crying they changed their mind).

I'm a bit attached to my bikes. They are the only thing that gets me out of this prison, and the only reason I leave the house. Plus of course I love them to bits too. So aye I was pretty devastated.

Thanks for your kind words today everyone. I spent most of the day at my mom and dads today while they waited for an assessor to a local hospice to come out. She did and went through a load of questions but it looks like there's a room available for him.

She's calling back in the morning to put the wheels in motion so it looks like he could be in there by tomorrow evening.

He is a little anxious but has a sense of relief. He doesn't want to be 'here' anymore. Understandably so after everything that's happened to him.

I have obviously sad, but also very good and grateful memories from a few family members of hospice and care places

When did wasp stings become so painful? I must have been stung by about a dozen wasps in my life, (granted I think the last one before today was about 25 years ago), but this feels like I've been cut and someone has poured salt on the wound!

18th December 2007, when the wasp and hornet council held a referendum, "more painful" won in a shock result, much to the chagrin of the underrepresented bee contingent.

Bastards!

I think it's slightly ironic, that I had no idea that the wasp was there, it just landed on my ankle as I was walking and then I felt a sharp pain, looked down and there it was. I must have caught about 100 wasps over the past 20 years or so and released them out the window without being stung once. :(

Clearly the only correct thing to do to a wasp is kill it.

I’ve been stung a few times by wasps and it rarely hurts. I wonder if it was a juvenile wasp, thinking that many things with nasty stings or venomous bites tend to be more powerful when they’re younger?

The pain was dying down to merely annoying levels, but I've just done the school run ( a brisk 2 mile walk) and now it's stinging once more.

Just went to the kitchen to get a drink. Hit light switch *BANG* Then I noticed the puddle.

And that the light is falling off the ceiling.

How come your landlord isn't sorting this out, in everyone's interest surely?

I have a feeling something is going on. Like, her being on the verge of financial collapse or something. For all I know she could have bailiffs after her, let alone the other way around..

I've had issues with her for about two years now. Right from the moment that she told us (at the time it was us) that she was selling the place. This was totally in the face of what she told us when we moved in, hence why at the time I put a lot of work into that kitchen as it was a *complete* hovel when we moved in. The duck egg wall you see there did not exist, just wet black brick she was supposedly getting fixed. About four years ago.. It never happened, so I wrapped the awful broken 80s kitchen and put up a false wall and repainted it all. At least it was liveable.

Any way, there are multiple other issues. Dodgy wiring, dangerous carpets (trip hazards) broken carbon monoxide detector etc. I reported it all to her, she ignored me. Then she sends me a text (yeah, a text, no letter or what not) telling me she wants another £60 a month rent. I refuse, that was the last time we spoke.

You're totally right. Her ignorance will be costing her thousands. Thing is? I have a feeling that she doesn't care because she's fucked. What other idiot would pay £130k for a flat, walk away and let it fall down? I have this weird feeling that it is only a matter of time* before I start seeing red "Delivered by hand" letters arriving here in her name.

* I am onto social services and ES tomorrow. As soon as they see the kitchen? yeah, I think I will be immediately made homeless.

Oh yeah. I spoke to the dude who owns the top flat and he said he is still chasing her for the two grand to paint the outside (that the council forced). He is nearly at the bailiff stage himself.
