If it's going to be anyone I'd guess Todd

THEY WERE SHOOTING AT EACH OTHER FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AND NO ONE GOT SHOT. Also, aren't 'Walt's guys' taking an absolutely insane risk with that sort of gunfight anyway? Walt is only any use to them alive so he can cook for them, so why start world war fucking three with Walt between them and the cops?

I'm also not buying that Todd missed his shot after staring down the barrel of an assault rifle for a good 30 seconds before taking his first shot.

Like I said before, there's just a bit too much stuff that doesn't quite chime right in Season 5, like it's being pushed in a direction towards conclusion, rather than allowed to play out believably.

Charlie Brooker talks to Vince Gilligan for an hour or so.

This was recorded just after the first episode of the second half of season 5 went out, and has spoilers from everything up to and including that episode.

A good episode, although I don't feel that it's as 'magnificent' as others are making it out to be on some forums.

Much of it worked very well, but some of it just didn't gel for me. I guess that overall it seemed too rushed, kind of like the writers are thinking "let's use as many shock tactics as we can as we hardly have any episodes left".

I couldn't quite believe that Walt even mentioned the money to the Nazi's. Surely he knew that there was no way they'd be leaving without it. At least he got to keep some of it.

His phonecall with Skylar, I want to watch it again, but do you think he was being genuine, or do you think he was saying what he needed to for her to not be implicated in any crime?

Interesting to hear that the opening flashback scenes were the very last that were filmed for Breaking Bad (not just for this episode, but counting them all).

Look at Walt's face as he talks on the phone. He's dying inside. He's absolutely lying, knowing the police are listening, to try and buy Skylar wriggle room to stay out of jail. "I did EVERYTHING', "I built it all, me, by myself." And she knows it -- hence the sudden, and half-genuine, 'I'm sorry.'

No doubt about it, and of course he's crying as he says it and he then drops Holly off with the firemen too. And now he's disappeared off with the guy who can make him a new person.

I'm beginning to wonder if he will 'get away with it' on the surface, but as was commented on earlier in this thread, the price he will pay in terms of the destruction of his mind and body and soul will make it pretty much the worst deal in history.

Horrible to see Hank and Gomez die, although I didn't fancy their chances at the end of the last episode.

The dynamic between Walt and Jesse seems to have changed a bit too far, too fast, for my money though. That's still not sitting right for me unless there's a massive shocker before the season ends. I just can't quite believe they'd turn on each other so totally and fundamentally.

Yeah, I rewatched it, and whilst I am confident that his plan with the phone call was to exonerate Skyler, clearly there's some true feeling behind what he's saying, and maybe he's realising how abusive his relationship with Skyler has become.

Ending theory, spoilers if you're not up to date:
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
I wonder if his plans for the ricin is going to be to somehow get it into a batch of product that Todd & Jesse are cooking.

It would destroy the Crystal Blue brand, meaning that no one else could make money by copying his formula.

When he first prepared the ricin in Season 2, he made a big point that an amount the size of a pin prick is enough to kill someone.

Obviously he's got the M60 too, I don't think he's going to need the ricin to eliminate anyone.

Anything could happen in the next two episodes, but maybe this is on the cards.

You have to assume:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
He's going to take out the whole neo-nazi gang. The fuckers killed Hank (poor Hank, so gutted) and stole all of his money, so you have to hope there's going to be epic justice there.

I'm also going to assume there will be some kind of epiphany about himself and thereby forgiveness of Jesse. Some endgame must see Jesse saved, nazis dead, and probably Walt dead in the last-gasp heroic act.

Unless they go for the ultimate tragedy of the ricin being meant for one but ending up killing his whole family, or something mental shocker thing like that.

A good set up for the final episode. Bit shocked at todd killing andrea, what's gonna happen to brock?
And a bit of a kick in the teeth for walt as all he worked for was for nothing if his family don't want his money.

Nah, the cracks are starting to show as they wrap it up:

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Walt cannot under ANY CIRCUMSTANCES contact his wife, but Todd and the nazi co and wander in at any time and threaten her and the baby?

Also, the jig is up with Walt, but the DEA don't pick up any of the taped video evidence, and leave it in Hank's house? Thus allowing Todd and the invisible nazis to once again wander in to steal the ONLY COPY? What the fudge?

And how do the nazis even know about Andrea? Walt didn't mention it, so what is that, telepathy? Loads of shit that's just way too convenient to be credibly believable.

Are those details even important? The Nazi's could very easily find that information regarding Andrea. They could just check Jesse's Facebook account, or even Skinny Pete's. They don't have to show everything

Yes, yes they are. Giant plot holes and doing really improbable things makes the show rather unbelievable. Some of the worst shows contain elements where things happen without reason or explanation.

I agree with you on the first example. It really seemed more like a thing out of Dexter than of a great show like Breaking Bad. I think the other two example are perfectly believable. In the second, weren't Hank and Gomez working under the radar? It could also be incompetence from the part of the DEA

Scenario:

Re-energised by that TV interview, Walt vows a last-stand style assault on the Nazis to recover the loot. He now intends to leave it all to grey matters' drugs charity as a final bit of oneupmanship. Maybe rescues Jessie along the way for old times sake.
The ricin is in case he is captured.
Hands self in. The end.

That was quite an ending.

Excellent.

But what do I watch now ........ ? i know, I'll re-watch these final eight episodes on Netflix. :D

BTW, be grateful that you weren't watching this episode live - apparently AMC were interrupting it with adverts about once every seven minutes or so. Sounds like it completely ruined the flow.

Most are about 44mins in total. The last 2 were 55. So with adverts it's probably 75 min.

There are a lot of flashbacks though, reminding you what those early eps are like ;)

Sopranos has enough distance by this point to seem new again.

I only had one problem with that final episode - the music that played over the final scene. Now I understand why it was used in terms of the lyrics but musically I don't think that it fit. I'd have much rather had something more in keeping (ie original score for that scene) or, far better still, no music at all. When I re-watch it I'll simply mute the volume. :)
