It should get its hooks into you about then, certainly I was a few episodes into Season 1 before it really clicked, and even then it wasn't a lightbulb moment, more a case of me somehow finding myself 'involved' with it over the course of an episode. IIRC it was Episode 4 when I sort of 'zoned out' and realised I'd been totally mesmerised by it for about 15 minutes when the tension settled a bit. |

I am disappointed that a Region-2 BBFC Certified 15 DVD should have the word 'fucked' silenced out Now don't get me wrong, it doesn't really matter in any practical sense, I could see the word in the subtitles and I could lip-read Skyler as well - but it still just jarred me out of the moment. Instead of hearing her deliver her bombshell to Walt, I heard NOTHING (In fact I heard worse than nothing, I heard two words totally missing the connecting word in the middle), and I had to fill in the gap from the subtitles and the word her lips formed - which is the same thing on a technical level, but it still removes the crashing violence of her saying that phrase to Walt. It's clearly a fuck-up because it would have been entirely allowed contextually and at that certificate by the BBFC, they've just submitted some kind of fucking pre-cut version. |

(I'm not saying that's bad or he's wrong or anything like that, just that it's not a show for everyone. It might just be that it takes longer to take hold with Grim - he says that he enjoyed the last two episodes and I think it'll grab him even more as season 2 progresses. |

I do wonder at which point I'm supposed to dislike starting Walt though, 'cause so far I still want the dude to win. Hard to say without giving anything away. It's 'easy' to like Walt as you've seen him so much of him that you understand the guy and you know that he's got a good heart which is slowly being encased in corruption; this understanding engenders a degree of sympathy towards him and what he does (and in most cases a dislike for Skyler who is over-bearing, overly fussy, lacking in empathy, vindictive and very controlling). This is what I'm wondering about, I mean, unless the guy goes through some sort of Darth Vader style transition and decides to start killing babies in his spare time, I can't understand how he's supposed to become the antagonist. Anyway, I'll find out in reasonably short order I suppose, just about to start now on Episode 12 (of 13) on Season 3, and then it'll be straight onto Season 4. I'm fascinated to see where it goes. |

You know there were 2-3 episodes at the start of Season 4 where I really felt it was starting to lose its way a little bit*, but the last couple of episodes have been absolute barnstormers and I'm now embarking on the second half of Season 4 with a driving keenness to see what happens. *Don't get me wrong, it wasn't poor or anything, it just seemed to lose focus somehow, the car wash stuff seemed overly protracted, as did the 'speech practice' thing. Dunno though, it could have been my mood, been a mad-busy week at work so maybe the fact I was feeling a bit tired and shitty before I started watching my nightly episode influenced me. Still not seeing Walt as the bad guy, but for the first time I'm now starting to think about his fate separately to Jesse's. |

For those of you that care, all four seasons on Blu-ray are currently $11.99 each on Amazon.com. These are region locked discs, mind you but it works out at £12.08 for an individual season, including shipping or £52.52 for all four, including shipping and pre-paid import taxes. |

Wow - great prices. I already have all four seasons Blu-ray, but I'm sure that some reading this don't. The region locking is a pain though if you don't have a multi-region player or a PC running AnyDVD HD (I play all my Blu-rays on the latter). |

Post subject: | Re: Breaking Bad |
So that's Season 4 all finished, (last night in fact, but I was tired and wanted to go to bed), still got to make a start on Season 5, as such this post will contain mega-spoilers up to and including the end of Season 4 (they will be appropriately tagged). Non-spoiler bit. Breaking Bad is the best thing I've ever watched, TV or film. End of. Apart from a couple of minor mis-steps, it's damn near perfect. I realise there probably aren't many folks left who haven't seen it already, but if you haven't, then watch it, you're missing out. I don't think there's too much more to say about the main characters and story arc, that's already been very well covered here and elsewhere although I will go into that a bit, but one thing I thought I would focus on are the side characters. What really stood out to me in Breaking Bad is the strength of the side characters, so often neglected and/or disposable and/or not given enough characterisation/motivation/scripting etc to make them interesting in so many series and films. If people just conveniently appear for an episode or two, then disappear again, never to be referenced again and/or apparently having any long-term impact, how can we care about them and how can we truly buy into the main protagonists' story arc? ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view! Anyway enough for today, I've a lot of thoughts about the main story and how Walt and Jesse develop (and all the other main characters for that matter), but I'll get round to those - very interested to hear other's thoughts and opinions though! |

A very good post, it's great to see you appreciate it overall, as well as the finer points regarding the side characters. Couldn't agree more about the section that you put in spoiler space - that was incredibly well done and felt very natural and realistic. Now onto Netflix with you and season 5! |

About to sign up for Netflix now, there's no way I can wait until the arse end of next year to get the DVD boxset for the whole season, so I'll have to make do with half of one for now. Is there anything else that's any good on there? Like good films and stuff? |
