CLEGANEBOWL was epic though.

Remember when the Hound realised the futility of the cycle of violence and lived a simple life as a builder and farmer for a season and appeared to be one of the characters who can learn and grow from his experiences? What happened to that guy’s story? “Guy returns to violence that kills him” could a valid ending but... why did he do it? He was driven back to it, reluctantly, after the people he was living with were killed. But then the reluctance vanished without trace and he was right back to the same character we started with.

Nah, piss on that. It was an obvious case of him trying to be someone else in a futile attempt at escaping his own nature.

I agree with Doc G. It was pants. All of the character element has gone, and now it's just 45 minutes of deeply repetitive fighting and ZOMG WHAT A SURPRISE plot "twists".

Bullshit.

Still, all that being said, it's probably better than where Martin has been heading with the books (although he'll likely die before he finishes them, the lazy bastard).

While we’re on the subject of “I see where we were going with this story but we got there via the laziest writing”: what the hell happened with Arya? Eight years we’ve been watching her transform into an implacable assassin, watching her soul leech away as she becomes colder and colder. Wondering if this is it for her or if she can turn it around, remember what it is to be human and to defined by more than war and hatred (as I type this I think she might serve as a decent metaphor for the whole of Westeros.)

And when eight years of relentlessly ratcheting pressure on her came to a close, what was the dramatic culmination? The Hound said “don’t” and she said “okay” and skipped off. Thirty seconds and we’re done with that story.

No to be fair, it wasn't all fighting. About 35 minutes of it was tedious brooding and signposted PLOT TWISTS.

No, I didn't

"She's not eating"
"I think the guards are watching me"
"We'll try again at supper"

Very subtle. Unusual for recent GoT

Not saying you're wrong, but if so, what was the point of the scene this week with the Hound paternalistically growling "don't choose this life, girl"?

Quote:
Jon's not a murderer
My ending prediction: face-off between Jon and Daenerys. Daenerys tells Drogon to burn Jon. Drogon refuses and sides with Jon. This final rejection and betrayal either drives Daenerys over the edge into insanity and someone (Jon or Arya being likely candidates) have to kill her [2]. Or she has a moment of clarity, recognises she is turning into her father, and kills herself to escape madness. Jon tells Drogon to melt the Iron Throne [1], finally breaking the wheel. He institutes some sort of ruling coalition of the leaders of the great houses. Sansa or Tyrion for "prime minister" of that.

[1] the carnage at the Red Keep has helpfully destroyed the throne room but left the throne in the open air, so they can get a dragon to it.
[2] as in, she rushes at them with a dagger or something.

AND ANOTHER THING

The entire face-off scene between Daenerys and Cersei last week.

(a) why didn't Cersei just kill Daenerys there and then? I cannot believe, after all we've seen from her, that she suddenly grew some respect for the rules of parlay. Those fuck-off great big crossbows could have killed Daenerys's inner circle at a stroke. (The only answer I can see is: because the plot demanded it, and consistent characterisation be damned.)

(b) why did Cersei kill Missandei? As long as she was alive, she was a useful pawn to keep alongside her as a shield against sudden dragon attack, or to further threaten with torture. Think about how less likely Daenerys would have been to rampage through the keep if her best friend was still in there. I cannot reconcile this behaviour with the plotting, calculating, clever Cersei we watched for years, who would surely never spend this valuable opportunity for so little gain. (Again, I think the answer is: because the plot demanded it. Both to ramp up pressure on Daenerys and to make Greyworm tag along on her heel turn.)

I loved the episode.

Thought Jaime’s ending was perfect.

Enjoyed Dany flipping as she had lost everything she ever wanted.

Thought CLEGANEBOWL was brilliant.

Thought Arya turning back was fine. She’s not suicidal, and Sandor made it very clear that nobody was getting out of the keep alive. She still has the struggle within her, but she wants to live, and her family is still the most important thing in the world to her.

Euron’s ending was slightly anticlimactic, but he did have a perfect final line; egotistical to the very end.

I think that was just a visuals thing. They’re supposed to be just out of arrow range.
