Just been cleaning my car for the first time in a couple of years and noticed the front of the bonnet is suffering from "roadrash". Under the layer of filth you couldn't see them, but now they are painfully obviousl

In other words, it has tens of very noticable small chips. It's a dark metallic paint so it's quite noticable.

Now I've used touch up paints before and have a local shop who can mix paint, but that seems like a total arseache for all these tiny chips let alone the potential for making things worse.

I saw this product in the USA and wondered if anyone knows of something like it over here and has used it:

http://drcolorchip.com/

Obviously the potential for fuck-up is huge hence why I'm asking. One thing on my side is that the car is dark green metallic which, in the past, has made touch ups easy to match.

As an aside, when the car was new (well second hand) the car was suffering from much the same thing but the VW dealer sorted it all out before I took delivery so it was good as new. No idea what they did but it was splendid. Probably a respray of the bonnet I guess....

On a related note, has anyone ever tried that Halfords scratch/dent repair service?

These are proper chips, T-Cut is only good for lighter marks. In fact I've removed some scratches with some polish earlier.

Some car shops will sell a small pot of touch up paint for your car.

That's not the problem. I can obtain such paint not 100 yards from my front door. What I want to find out is if there is something better. That American product appears to fill in the chips far easier for example.

On a related note, isn't it time we had a new Road Rash game? The latter releases on the PSOne weren't bad, but it fell into a similar flaw as the newer Mario Kart games in that the combat became too powerful to the detriment of the racing. There was also a lack of cow ramping if I recall correctly "Moooooooo!"

I'd love to see a spiritual sequel to Road Rash 2 complete with stupidly overpowered crazy bike that spends 10 seconds in the air every time you hit a ramp, and comedy cutscenes for whenever you get wrecked or lose the race. Those little cinemas were genius.

On a genuinely related note, best to keep away from all that T-Cut type stuff. Just takes a thin layer of paint off your car improving it in the very short term but ruining the finish in the long term.

The motorbikes in Burny P might be almost Road Rash-tastic; but there will be no punching. :(

Auto Glym Paint Restorer followed by their Super Resin Polish avoids this. The Paint Restorer is far more mild than T-Cut but still gets the job done and the super resin polish only buffs and doesn't visibly remove any paint.

Basically when you use T-Cut your cloth goes the colour of your car, but with Auto Glym you just can't do that unless you were polishing super hard with the paint restorer.

Then finish off with their wax polish and you won't need to polish your car again or even clean it that much for the next year.

Auto Glym products are expensive but are the mutts.

Speed Kings was certainly in the spirit of Road Rash. Up to four players on the Gamecube too. Quick vid I recorded of it a little while back.

You could always get it resprayed.

I'm not taking the piss, it should be about £75, and I might be doing it to mine - although mostly because it's rusting from the inside along both side edges. I figure I may as well do the lot and get rid of all the chips as well.

I wouldn't trust Halfords scratch/chip repair service simply because of Halfords' alias on most car forums (Halfrauds).

Try and find a bodywork specialist in your area. They're usually a bit more expensive but the chances are the work is of a far higher quality.

Really? Are you talking about the entire car here (for £75) or just a part of it? Might look at that myself.

For 75 sterlings I'd imagine it was just the bonnet.

We were quoted £1000 to have a whole car resprayed - we didn't go for it.

Oh yes, very definitely just the bonnet. If I decide I'm keeping the car*, maybe the front bumper as well, which I'd think would be more like £200 (it being more angly and harder to take off/put on). Getting the rear quarter panel stripped, filled, primed and sprayed after a disagreement with the central reservation on the M62 cost £300, and he'll have had to take a mould of the other side to do it.

* Like with anything else, there are a bunch of things that while reasonably cheap/quick/simple to do would probably add up to getting a better price for the car.
