In fairness, I've always felt slightly uneasy when reading club by-laws or other regulations and I see something like:

4.b No member shall dance the Morris on club time without the consent of the Committee
4.c This section is kept blank

Why would you pass an empty rule? I think they're out to get us.

It would have been a rule that has since been revoked and they don't want to have to renumber the existing sections.

:this: The unbridled pleasure of dealing with HMRC via the gateway is something that brings me out in a cold sweat. It's slow like it's 1997 and it crashes more often than a percussionist's cymbals. Oh, and the best bit is when you have to speak to someone at HMRC about using the gateway. They have two advisory departments, one on how to use the gateway but knows nothing about taxation, and one on tax, who doesn't know anything about using the gateway!

Other than the fact you have to use a bizarre Government Gateway ID that is autogenerated and sent to your house, so you have to get it reset, which is easy enough, letting you complete the process, then they send you another Government Gateway ID. I think I have seven now. Oh, and heaven help you if you ever hit the back button.

Give me a drink and I'll happily discuss where I think I stand on matters theological, and I'm always interested in what others think and how it affects their lives. The history and culture of religion fascinates me, but whether I choose to disclose where I (currently) stand is a decision for me. I'm uncomfortable with it being recorded on a form, and I doubt anyone's position can really be simplified down to a tickbox.

Just like sex, religion is a personal matter best kept behind closed doors between you and the Being you're doing it with.

And currently, I'm not getting any

Actually, I think I'm wrong there and you're right. Because the reminder form has a unique ID on it, you don't have to bother. Go apply for a driving license though, that's a ton of fun.

I used that Taxdisc site this very morning to re-declare* my bike as SORN**. It was as simple as typing in the reference number from the warning letter, then click a couple of Next buttons. Job done.

But as has been stated, for both religion and sexuality, if the government doesn't know you exist, it can't do anything about it, or fail to act on your behalf.

The point is though, politicians are arseholes. If 90% of the people fill that out as Jewish, they'll think "Gosh, Judaism is unexpectedly popular. If we pass a law mandating attendance at temple on Saturdays, we'll get re-elected for sure!"

Silly example, but you get my point.

Well, quite. But as I don't think governments should pass such laws, or indeed even care, to tick a box on the question would be to tacitly approve such a division.

Well no - but what decides whether governments should pass such laws? You guessed it, the vested interest of the electorate! And guess what tells the government what that is?

But seriously, is there any part of the government's work that actually needs to plan based on this information? If it's to do with statutory grant awarding powers, then I'd be interested in how much the 'no religion' sector will receive.

All of it! Knowing how much of your population is Jewish by religion or Arabic by nationality can have an impact on the attitude you take with regard to foreign policy in Israel and the Middle East. Knowing how many people identify as Christian can have an impact on home policy agendas that religious groups are known to feel strongly about, like gay marriage.

May I also suggest that Question 9, in the Individual's section, also provides an opportunity to tick "Elsewhere" and Write in "Cornwall". I would certainly recommend that that is also the case for anyone being forced, because of externally imposed Economic Centralisation, to be born in Aber Plym (Plymouth). The principal reason, in fact, why we must "Keep Cornwall Whole".

Incidentally, It would be constitutionally accurate to state "Duchy of Cornwall", in accordance with the Kilbrandon Report recommendation in 1973.

Compared with a 30 person queue at a post office the online tax is one of the few decent things the goverment does online

Not used the Government Gateway for this but have when I got a new license after moving house, then I lost it and had to get another one. It was a bit long winded but I kept the paperwork.

I think I have to buy another one this year as my photo is up so will see how that goes.
