10 Downing Street, London. Probably won't be time for biscuits, unless you take a hostage on the way in.

Just found a brilliant wall of text email from the boss who likes to bitch about the standard of my emails, without ever giving an example. "as these communications may be stressful to the student, she will continue to receive such communication".

So.... you've just told a faculty director that we'll keep sending emails to a student, because it stresses her out.

Sigh. Once again, I'll have to wade in and fix something that someone else fucked up months ago by pissing around with my students without asking or knowing that the hell they were doing. On the plus side, that's only the second time today.

Please punch my face. Thank you.

Have you started looking for another job yet? You need to get out of there, and staying to help the students (which you seem to do brilliantly, yet is consistently difficult with all the moronic barriers you're facing) is not going to be good for your own health and happiness. The shit has already started hitting the fan, and you need to stop standing behind it.

I have, I applied for a couple this week. I'm cherry picking which ones I go for, as they're mostly away across the country and there's no point spending all my savings on interviews, plus I don't want to jump ship directly into an even crappier ship. But ugh, it really can't come soon enough. I'm sure people are sick of hearing about it, but if I don't mouth off somewhere I'm going to end up sending an email I regret, so.

I just need to look forward to the day I can staple my notice to someone's stupid face, and tell them I'm leaving to do their job somewhere else, except well.

Cheers for the ear, by the way

The more I think about it, the less I'm sure about the job I interviewed for yesterday. The interviewer said a couple of things which, at the time, I took for being poor attempts at cracking jokes, but am starting to wonder now if they weren't just plain rudeness.

For instance, I'd specifically requested that the interview take place during my lunch hour as I didn't want my current employer knowing I'm looking elsewhere - that's why they settled on a noon interview (though this of course necessitated a dodgy looking pre-12 departure from the office) . I'd noticed that the interview seemed to have been going on for a long while, but didn't want to appear rude by looking at my watch. Eventually the interviewer chap told me "we better wrap this up in a minute, you probably need to be getting back." So I asked him what the time was?

"13:25"

"Shit!", I rather accidentally exclaimed.

"Good job you're looking for a new job then," was his reply.

I informed him that I was very sorry but I really would have to go soon as my boss is quite strict on time-keeping, which he told me was good because so was he. All the same, the interview didn't wrap up until 13:40. He told me he hoped I could smooth over the massive overrunning of my lunch break, I said "so do I" and he told me "well, that's your problem really, not mine."

I haven't actually heard anything from them yet. It did, despite the above, feel like it had gone pretty well at the time, but now I'm neither sure if it really did, nor if I'd actually want the job if offered it.

They mentioned the possibility of there being a second interview at some point though, so if that happens I can take a better look round and try to get a better idea for whether or not it's the sort of place I'd want to work.

Ok, trying to find a way to do a poor joke about the Second Coming led me to this Wikipedia page, concerning another one to add to the 'BeeX List of Great Cornishmen':

Wikipedia wrote:
John Nichols Thom, or Mad Tom, (1799 - May 31, 1838) was a Cornishman, a self-declared messiah who, in the 19th century led the last battle to be fought on English soil.
...
[He] assumed the identity of Sir William Courtenay, declared himself "saviour of the world" and became a wandering preacher. He again wore his colourful costumes, including an embroidered Maltese Cross and a sword which he claimed to be Excalibur. Later witnesses also stated that he had nail marks in his hands. He supported the cause of farm workers who resisted the effects of the Poor Law Amendment Act 1834, which ordered all able-bodied men to workhouses if they could not find work.

Thom gathered a following of more than one hundred people and convinced them that their faith would make them invulnerable to steel and bullets. He also claimed that he could slay 10,000 men by hitting his left hand with his right and that if he were shot dead, he would come back to life three days later.

From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Nichols_Thom

Fascinating story.

Pub time now.

Add that to the no internet policy at work, and I would be saying, thanks but no thanks.

I look at interviews as my chance to see whether it is a place that I would want to work, rather than them seeing if they want to employ me, but then I'm an arrogant fuck! :D

Unbelievable. I've booked a week's holiday for the end of the month. I've checked, and nobody else in my department is off then. Boss emails asking why it's so 'late notice' because our ridiculous policy says that two weeks' notice are needed to take a week off. Even though nobody is off, and I was 2 days short of that, and if I took one less day it wouldn't count as a week, so 2 weeks wouldn't apply.

WHAT FUCKING DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE YOU RIDICULOUS SATIRE OF A HUMAN BEING

You know, this is the first time I've interviewed for somewhere where the actual interview has put me off wanting to work for them, 'tis an alien concept for me.

If I do get a second interview, I'll go along but I'm going to be having more of a look at the place this time, so that if they do offer me the job, I can make sure it's something I want. I really don't want to end up going from one shit job straight into another.

FILTH! Shit, I don't even mind that the gal obviously has a few 'heavy flow' issues. :D

(Mind you, having clicked on the least red photo for a good, old fashioned perv, I was greeted with some blasted picture of a wind turbine with 'GO ENVIRONMENTAL!11' banner obscuring all the interesting wobbly and immaculately Brazilian bits from view. I guess that's what they call Poetic Justice, given my rather un-PC ramblings in Mali's 'Swampy' thread earlier today :D )

Making no mention of how long the interview would take, knowing that you were nipping over there on your lunch break, kind of is his problem, nein?

What the hell has she done to her pubes? Christ. I thought shaving them off was ridiculous enough, but making them into a hitler 'tache has to take that crown.

Anyway, should I know who she is? She in a band or something? I've definitely heard the name, but she doesn't look familiar.

Trailer here. Has some gratuitous railway scenes (yay!).

Can't quite say it's making me go and watch it, however. Dagny Taggart looks every bit as cardboard here as she does in the book.*

* Yes, for some reason I did once plough through it (a heck of a lot of bad karma on my part, I fear). The sex scenes are horrid, Galt's speech is overlong and irritating, and the characters utterly unlikeable. And then there's the politics - Orwell she ain't. The bit about the launch of the John Galt line is quite good, however.

The brilliantly named Protection of Freedoms bill makes for some interesting reading. Especially s54:
Quote:
Offence of immobilising etc. vehicles

(1)A person commits an offence who, without lawful authority—
(a)immobilises a motor vehicle by the attachment to the vehicle, or a part of it, of an immobilising device, or
(b)moves, or restricts the movement of, such a vehicle by any means, intending to prevent or inhibit the removal of the vehicle by a person otherwise entitled to remove it.

(2)The express or implied consent (whether or not legally binding) of a person otherwise entitled to remove the vehicle to the immobilisation, movement or restriction concerned is not lawful authority for the purposes of subsection (1).

(3)Subsection (2) does not apply where—
(a)there is express or implied consent by the driver of the vehicle to restricting its movement by a fixed barrier, and
(b)the barrier was present (whether or not lowered into place or otherwise restricting movement) when the vehicle was parked.

(4)A person who is entitled to remove a vehicle cannot commit an offence under this section in relation to that vehicle.

(5)A person guilty of an offence under this section is liable—
(a)on conviction on indictment, to a fine,
(b)on summary conviction, to a fine not exceeding the statutory maximum.

(6)In this section “motor vehicle” means a mechanically propelled vehicle or a
vehicle designed or adapted for towing by a mechanically propelled vehicle.

So, it would appear that if it goes through, then clamping cars could disappear.

Good, I thought they were getting stopped this year, I assume this bill is the one that is going through to do it?

We have a great parking system at my flat, but that has come about by accident rather than design.
Everyone has 1 space, but as we live next to the college and train station, those quite often get used by idiots.
"We" also have about 6 communal spaces that are on college land and not part of the landlords freehold, yet appear to be part of the flats rather than anything else.
The parking nazis that have been employed by the landlord are total idiots, and cant seem to understand that the communal spaces aren't ours and they have no jurisdiction over them so they ticket cars parked there if they aren't showing a parking permit for the flats. We also have a load of double yellow lines that have been randomly painted, but this is on the access road, which is owned by the college, and the yellow lines aren't enforceable (no termination, no signs etc...) The parking dudes ticket anyone parking there too! :D

The solution the residents have come up with is that we ignore them, park where we like and rip up any tickets we get and tell the parking nazis to piss off if they ask for any money.
College students and commuters see the tickets and don't park there, we get lots of spaces to park in, it works very well :D

How does that sit with, say, a neighbour bloking your car on your driveway?

Well you can't clamp it or move it, but the council can under subsection 4, I would suggest.

What I wonder is whether subsection 4 also covers the private clamping/towing firms where you've parked in a 'your vehicle will be clamped' area.

I meant with respect to:

(1)A person commits an offence who, without lawful authority—
(a)immobilises a motor vehicle by the attachment to the vehicle, or a part of it, of an immobilising device, or
(b)moves, or restricts the movement of, such a vehicle by any means, intending to prevent or inhibit the removal of the vehicle by a person otherwise entitled to remove it.

ie, they are immoblising your car unlawfully.

It doesn't cover them, this legislation is intended to outlaw private clamping firms.

Right, but subsection 4 needs clarity. What constitutes entitlement to remove a vehicle?

I imagine it's defined elsewhere in the document. My understanding was "a council license and the vehicle being on public land".

Talking of horses... I might have been a bit hasty when I said that they were stupid because they need their shoes nailed to their feet, because it turns out that they make excellent conductors :DD

(sorry)
