We'd like to put a picket fence around that little bit of garden (there are some beautiful rose bushes just behind where I was stood taking the photo) and make it all pretty but that's slipped off the list a bit. We even thought we'd give it a number (48b) and a name (Mini Vale View, because the house is called 'Vale View').

The kids, however, decided to call it 'the wolf den'.

All that love put into it, and they choose the fucking 'wolf den' >:(

They also wrote some charming messages on the floor before I put the carpet tiles down

Have they written The Wolf Den in red, then crossed it out because the black was better?

I would love it if they'd just abandoned writing all of the rest in favour of multiple poo, poo, poos.

I’m painting the hallway at the moment (though big love to Russell for painting the bits that Mimi’s, despite their Amazonian-like stature, cannot reach), and I tackled the staircase today. I’ve just put down my brush, but I’m happy with it.

It has been painted numerous times with paints that clearly hadn’t played well together and we’re all peeling and bubbling off, so I stripped it back with a heat gun, sanded it, and then painted it today. I’m looking forwards to finally getting our photos hung up.

That handle definitely dates the house. My nan’s home in Dudley had very similar ones. Easy job to bring it up to date.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Yeah, the house was built in the early 50s, and most of the fittings are from then or the early 70s, as we are the third owners and the two that went before seemed to decorate when they moved in and then leave it as is.

The door handles is tiny. Like, Beadle-hand sized.

There was also a handle on the kitchen door that was like a razor, and kept ripping all my clothes.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

The handles on the kitchen cupboards and drawers have been popping off due to too little thread engagement.

I've replaced all 14 with these doobries which match the ones on the pantry unit we got a couple of years back.

Only 2 holes (2 per handle) needed sub-millimetre reaming, that's pretty good going for cardboard aided engineering if you ask me.

Cordless drill, driver and vac make stuff like this so much quicker and easier!

Omg, I didn’t even know that lax BEEXers could make your handles pop off. I’ll have to check mine.

Sneaky radiator installed under kitchen cabinets. We took out a wall to make the kitchen/dining one area and lost a radiator in the process so this is the solution.

Oh! We’ve got one of those under the oven! It’s a fan heater or a cold air fan in summer. I’ve never used ours. Never seen one before, or since… until today!

As long as you've got the switches set right it should come on automatically with the central heating and puts out quite a bit of warm air

Author:  Mimi [ Wed Dec 22, 2021 16:22 ]
Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Oh, I didn’t realise that. Ours is just switched off :D

To be fair our kitchen is tiny, and cold, so I only go in there to cook, and if I’m in there cooking then it tends to warm up *because* of the cooking, so sort of solves the problem whilst it’s in use.

I don't think it's that clever, it just sniffs the hot water circulating and puts the fan on, relies on you balancing the rest of the radiators in the house.

Oooh this is interesting, as we will have a similar problem when we sort our kitchen. I was looking at a small rad mounted higher up a wall elsewhere but was worried all the heat would bugger off upwards and give no benefit whatsoever. Under-cupboard thingies might be the answer!

I have read so many tales of people having underfloor heating put in then their heating bill basically doubling. Is there a way to do it without costing the earth?

You really need to combine it with a ground source heat pump.

Really? Why is this? Don't you just need to put in X energy took make room Y warm?

The neat thing about heat pumps is that you put in X to run them, but they extract 4X energy from the air or ground.
The down side is that this multiplier effect is more efficient at lower temperatures than you get from a normal boiler so they are well suited to underfloor heating with a large area to heat gently over a long period.

Obligatory link to the Technology Connections video on heat pumps.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Well yes, I know heat pump good and everyone should install heat pump be it ground or air source.

That wasn't my point though, all you're doing with a heated floor is relocating the radiator by 90 degrees so why does it have to cost more to run?

Incidentally I run my rads pretty cool so that kids can touch them and not immediately catch fire.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Maybe those whose heating bills doubled went from a gas boiler to electric underfloor heating. I thought it was meant to be more efficient generally speaking.
