We’ve nearly finished the craft room now. We wallpapered two walls and I painted the other in a chalk paint shade ‘Greige’ which I love. We’ve hung up the little additional table to hold the plotter, and we’ll hopefully move the main table in tomorrow. The big Kallax unit was awkward, as it was only when we went to build it that we realised it said you needed two people, snd it had to be assembled laying flat, and it’s built too-down. But the room wasn’t big enough to assemble it flat, so we had to build it bottom-upwards. Then the very final bolts have to be attached from underneath. Still, we managed it fine, and it fits perfectly once we got it into place.


We put in a curtain rod, some curtains and lampshade, and it’s nearly ready for the table and chair. I popped up a little cloud shelf my Ma sent as well which instantly made me happy that I chose that paint colour.

Oh, and I painted that dark wooden windowsill white.

They’re super handy for D’s toys. I’ve got some 25l plastic lidded tubs from Dunelm to hold things like wool (which I can’t put in the normal pull out boxes as they need to be moth-proof), and it makes it easy to see what is where.

I know the room isn't very wide, so space is a premium, but a flush to the wall fold downable long bench on the left wall would be awesome for fabric layouts etc... Or is it too tight for that?

I think it’s too narrow to make it work. The little table you can see on the right is attached to the wall and folds down, and there’s another larger table that fills the rest of the wall under the window, which gives me a good sized sewing space. I actually find it easier to cut out with a rotary cutter, on two A1 cutting mats on the floor. This is a much larger sewing surface than I had previously. Now I just need the ironing part to do itself. :D

Aeons ago we bought cabin beds for the kids. They had to be assembled in the room in which they were to be used because they would be impossible to move afterwards, being too big, too heavy, and would probably have collapsed under their own weight and ungainliness.

This was OK in my daughter's medium sized bedroom, but my son was in the box room with barely enough room to work when it was lying in its front, which I'd HAD to be for assembly. If we'd realised this and checked the size of the things before ordered them we wouldn't have bothered.

What level of effort/skill do you think would be required to change built-in wardrobe doors from the hinged 'open outwards' style to something that slides on runners?

It'd be so much easier in the kids bedrooms if their built-ins had sliding doors.

There are many different systems out there. Your first concern is to get a system that will deal with the weight.
Then there are handle issues, if they stick out they’ll need swapping so that the doors pass each other smoothly.
Usually, runner systems have adjustability to keep the doors level, but the marking up and rebating for the doors may require a router.
Then there’s the rail. Is it to be mounted on the wardrobe and if so how? Or is it going to be mounted on the ceiling, and is it level, do you know where the joists are.

So, no, it isn’t straightforward

I like the idea of having doors so that the stuff in there can be hidden away out of sight, it looks nicer to me that way.

Bummer... Hmm, well it's what they call a 'built-in' over here so it's really like it's already part of the room.... I assume it's going to have some form of stud wall in there, with plasterboard over the top. I was kind of hoping I could just buy an all-in-one set of doors with runner/rails and frames that I could whack into the hole left by removing the old doors (I don't care about keeping the pre-existing doors).

Sunday was a day for a job or two

Lady T bought a fridge off a mate, but this 'new' one is significantly wider, so I had to take off the piece on the side, and 'extend' the bit at the top (I bought a white shelf and cut it to size, then plonked the cupboard on top. We'll use the newly-created gap at the top right for keeping the chopping boards. The old one will go in the shed out the back. I even removed, cut and then replaced the skirting board properly, so it is actually for once something that's finished off properly, which then inspired me to go and do more stuff while I was on a roll.

This 'new' fridge has an ice maker and a chilled water dispenser, so it needed plumbing into the water supply... so I ran some 1/4" plastic pipe under the cupboards and connected it to the drinking water filter system that lives under the sink.

I also replaced some bits of decking that had broken. Can you guess which ones I replaced?

The dog seemed happy with the work.

I also fixed this art easel that broke about 3 or 4 years ago when some high wind blew it over and snapped the cheapo plastic hinges at the top. My eldest thought that "hinge butts" were a very funny name.

Then I mounted this giant ruler so we can mark it as the kids grow. The bricks are so bastard hard that my hammer drill couldn't only make a dent and the bits were going to get trashed. So in the true spirit of 'fuck it, that'll do' I drilled a hole in the mortar and fixed it that way :ninja:

In the background you'll see a surround sound speaker at an irritating angle. The kids think it's hilarious to keep doing that, even though it annoys me immensely.

I then stuck the old fridge out in the shed. I had to take the doors off the fridge to get it out the back door. Now the old-old fridge is redundant I'll try and sell it (although Lady T suggested we keep it 'just in case', I really don't think we need 3 fridge freezers)

Finally I decided to put up some coat hooks. The dark one was in the laundry, but we moved it so we could put shelves in instead. The lighter one I bought from the local DIY shop. I'll stain the wood later (gimme a couple of years to build up to it OK) Annoyingly the wood base for the new one was ever so slightly different width to the old one so I elected to line up the centre hooks rather then the edge, and I'm not sure I'm happy with that decision. But if I'd chosen to align one of the edges, I probably would have found that wonky too.

This one was so very annoying actually, all those bits were nicely sorted before that. This case is a really bad and pointlessly annoying design though.

Whoa! Good work! What a productive weekend.

Our cold water and ice dispenser is getting a lot of use at the moment. Hopefully the electrician is coming out today, so we might have a usable kitchen by the weekend (Joan's needs to do plumbing).
