Decided to repaint the office.

Noticed some loose paint, half the wall came off, then spent the rest of the day, scraping, sanding and swearing..

Repainted and moved the office around.

I have replaced the motor, rewired the light and swapped out the rheostat foot pedal for something a bit more modern and controllable, in my 50s sewing machine.
Put it all back together and it worked first time! That was more luck than judgement...

Note the ziplock back rammed in the middle to stop the speed-thingy from shorting onto the resistor-thingys.
