Fitting skirting board is not fun when you have to try and match two different sizes. Not fun at all.

Saturday afternoon Russell went to fetch Darwin’s broken trike from the garage, to see if we could fix it (top and bottom halves of steering column had become disengaged. Anyone who has ever had a smart trike probably knows the tiny red converter clip, tournament out that 2mm but of plastic is all that keeps the two halves aligned, and it just snaps, leaving the steering column to rotate freely and independently of the wheel. Piece of rubbish.)

Anyway, as Russell opened the garage door the handle/lock fell off.

We’d had a break in a while ago, and they smashed the handle off the garage. It turns out the locksmith was a cowboy and he’s attached the new handle/lock with a single bolt.

So we went to B and Q to buy a new one, but they don’t sell them. The lock also doesn’t fit our garage, so was propped in with a single grommet. We had to make another one out of metal tubing, so had to buy 5ft of metal blinking tubing, and a hacksaw, as of course we didn’t, and new bolts, and a washers to brace against the grommet. For goodness sake. At least it’s firmly attached, though. That locksmith is a disgrace.

And we fixed the trike for the time being, too, until we get him a proper bike.

In my kitchen I have wall cupboards (like most people I suspect) but mine have heavy doors that you lift up and have gas powered piston things that hold the doors open. The kitchen was from MFI and within a couple of years of having it, they went bust. Soon after this, the pistons lost power and would no longer hold the doors up. I did find the manufacturer but they were in Italy and wanted £400+ to replace them. Stuff that...

For the past 5 or so years, we've been opening the cupboards and holding them with one hand... Until yesterday that is!

Thanks to a friendly Reddit thread, I discovered a similar style piston on Amazon and managed to replace the lot for under £30!

I don't like to throw around the term 'life changing' but seriously... This will take some beating.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Definitely the wrong thread for this but I couldn’t find one better suited.

I have eight wooden pencil boxes and ten wooden laser cut Christmas baubles. All are in lightweight unfinished wood.

The idea is to get Darwin to use his newfound writing skills to write each of his six nursery staff members names. I’ll convert this into a vector graphic and use the plotter to cut it from vinyl and then use the vinyl
cut names to decorate the pencil boxes and decorations.

But vinyl does not make a good job of adhering to unfinished wood, so I want some kind of surface treatment.

I could paint it with acrylic paints, but I wondered if anyone knew what my options would be in regards to a clear varnish/lacquer treatment, to keep the original colour/woody-ness?

Obviously they are only teeny little things so I’d want something cost-effective, as otherwise I’d probably just go with the acrylic option, but thought I’d ask here first. I wasn’t sure if maybe @DBSnappa (because I think he works with wood in some capacity? Cabinet making?) or someone else who was a bit DIY handy might know?

Sorry, that’s my poor explanation. The vinyl is self-adhesive. It’s basically the same stuff that sign-makers use to make, well, signs. Think signs above a shop. So, it’s more making a good surface for that to stick to than finding a specific glue.

I used the vinyl on a wooden box last year. I used a spray lacquer on that one and it worked brilliantly, but took about three coats of the spray, which was difficult as I have nowhere to spray in the tiny flat, and no outside space.

I have learned that before you take a toilet apart to replace a leaky seal, you should buy replacements for ALL the seals in the damn thing, as there is no way the decade-old bits of perished crap are ever going to be water tight after you put it back together again.

Yo! The Mud Room needs a repair. This wall is only one brick thick, which I think is WRONG and of LAZY CONSTRUCTION, the type of half arsed job I would do. When it rains, water comes in. Wall is about 4m, roof is plastic conservatory stuff

Anyhow, how much do you think it'd be to Get A Person In to prop the roof up, remove wall, and rebuild properly?

Afterthought: the mudroom could be extended to reach the Downstairs Lavatory so one wouldn't have to go leave the building to get to it.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

As the roof isn't at all heavy, I could just get a conservatory contactor in, stick a nine inch wall there and blank panel the rest, pivot the end section 45 degrees to enclose the lavatory and there we are.

Our new conservatory, which after 7 months still isn't finished (or being paid for), is now leaking along the seam with the house.

I *should* have fucking DIYd it.

Yesterday I replaced the main PCB in the washing machine because Samsung can't make simple electronics apparently.
