doesn't particularly belong here, but it appears the plug of our iron has been sat in a sink full of water all night.

Presumably I need to wire a new plug? Or is the whole thing likely a goner? I'm proper shit at this sort of stuff.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

I'd probably wire in a new plug to be on the safe side, but unless you have a plug socket in that sink full of water and it was plugged in to that at the time, the iron itself should be fine.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

I'd just open the plug up, dry it out thoroughly, like leave it on a radiator for a day and perhaps spray a bit of WD40 or similar in there.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

I'd dry it out and change the fuse. But if you can't wait I'd just put a new plug on. I wouldn't spray WD40 in the plug, that stuff is incredibly flammable on something running 13A through it!

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

Yeah maybe not WD40, I have CorrosionX but I was trying to think of something similar that most people might have.

Thank you. Luckily we only have the one kind of plug socket in the sink, and that enables the drainage of water.

Thank you! Will give this a go first and see how confident I feel about it.

Edit - just saw DBSnappa's post. Thanks DBS, you saved the Fop house's bacon. You nearly got us, MarkG. Next time.

Although saying that I've seen WD40 being used loads on wet electrical things to displace moisture boat engine parts and suchlike, it's really not incredibly flammable it's just the propellant that is.

True. I still wouldn't use it though. I'd just dry the plug and change the fuse, as that's probably the only part that can be damaged by water.

Plugs are so cheap I'd just replace it, to be honest.

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

If you’ve a spare, or a hardware store nearby, I think I’d just replace it, to ensure there was no moisture that might be dangerous or corrode the plug inners. It’s a five minute job and they’re so cheap that it is probably less hassle than taking it apart and trying to get every drop of moisture out.

We're probably going to convert it back to a 4th bedroom anyway. Who creates a 2nd bathroom but doesn't put a toilet in it?

Hmm. Not sure if it's strictly "wrong", but at the least it has to be >1m away from any water source. I'd also make sure there was a very efficient extractor fitted. Goes without saying don't plug/unplug anything with wet hands.

I thought it flat-out wasn't allowed?

[edit] Aha: Sockets are not allowed in bathrooms or shower rooms (apart from shaver-supply units) unless they can be fitted at least three metres from the bath or shower.

I've broken the law, then. Go me!

We won't be using it anyway. Neither of us take baths and we have a shower cubicle in the other room.

Thanks for looking it up. I couldn't remember and couldn't be arsed looking :)

I recalled it being allowed as there are power supplies in all bathrooms for lights/extractors and you have to be careful with position of those as well.

But we don't know if it's a molded plug, do we? If it is, you have the tricky problem of stripping the wire ends for the new plug if you have to cut the old one off.

I’d be checking for damp and if you find it, I’d be having a word with the surveyor.

Damp you say? Hadn't thought of that.

They did have a massive dog though. It smells of dog.

Yeah it's probably just the carpets then if there are any. You could try getting them cleaned, or hiring a carpet cleaner and doing it yourself.

Bicarbonate of Soda is the only reliable means I know of getting rid of bacterial smells like dog. Not sure how you'd treat carpets — I'd google it if I were you.

There's carpet cleaners that are formulated for getting rid of animal smells. Don't know how effective they are but it's probably worth a shot.

It's ok, the carpet is going for laminate flooring anyway. But the smell lingers in the kitchen and dining room which are already laminate. There are no curtains. :(

It all needs replastering and new wallpaper then?

Post subject:  Re: DIY? GTFO!

First off I'd probably just try cleaning it all as thoroughly as possible, get behind the fridge and the cooker, everywhere that might not be obvious. Unless there is damp then I would doubt that the smell is coming from the walls.

Was it empty for a while before you moved in? Ours was and smelt really stale and strange for a while after we moved in. Either it went as we aired it out, or we just got used to it.

Having a bit of a clear out.

Does anyone need a load of mud with bits of bricks in? £2 per bag.

Also a full compost bin that's full of mud £12.

A bag of broken glass GONE

Big rotten table that smells of mushrooms GONE

Oh there is definitely damp as the decking outside is higher than the floor level and forms a bridge to the house. We've just had the damp man round to do some remedial work (we got the cost knocked off the price of the house) but it's not a damp smell, it's a dog smell. And they had a massive dog that roamed everywhere it seems.

Wet dog smell? We should be so lucky!
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
After several months one of our bedrooms still smells of decaying mouses :'( and we've just had a fun week of massive dopey flies and malformed flies appearing from nowhere/everywhere.

Use traps not poison, kids.

We got two new ones within the last two days too. Cute little fuckers, even with the jewellery and the rigor mortis.
