September in The Motherland suggests otherwise.

So! Last week I was quite excited to receive my copy of the rather ace co-op superhero card game, Sentinels Of The Mutiverse. I was somewhat less excited to quite badly tear one of the cards due to my own special brand of fat-handed idiocy. I went on the publisher's website and was pleased to find that they sold replacement cards for a very reasonable 50 cents a pop. However, on trying to check out my order I discovered that some weirdness in their ordering system meant I was being charged nearly $40 to get my single card delivered, so I sent them an email explaining the situation and asking what the actual cost of delivery would be. A few days later, I got a mail back from the designer of the flippin' game telling me not to worry as my replacement card was in the post.

I am teh impressed. Greater Than Games:

Most board game publishers seem willing to send bits and bobs out for free if you've lost/destroyed them. You don't even have to lie and say "it wasn't in the box when I bought it, honest".

So, the lack of anyone taking any sort of video based entertainment to the cottage made this actually happen. Essentially a full weekend of board games.

Ticket to ride
Munchkin
Chrononauts(?)
Some weird ball and chain chess variant
Scrabble
The beex game

All of which were amazing fun, but the winning game of the weekend?

Apples to apples

What started in daylight with 6 of us, ended 3 hours later in darkness with 15 of us crowded round, with constant hilarity throughout. Best game ever.

I've just watched the Tabletop episode in which they played Pandemic, it looks all kinds of spiffy.

Didn't someone in this thread mention that they played this?

Had a go on the iOS version of Ticket to Ride Europe last night.

Maybe I should read the rules as I didn't really understand the tunnels.

A few have.

I own it, and I can't say I was overly impressed. I like the idea, but it seemed a bit lacking in implementation.

I may have mentioned it in passing.

The thing with Pandemic is that if it's not hurting, it's not working. A big chunk of the game is the tension that comes with fighting against the odds, so if you play it with too few Epidemics (or screw up the rules to make it too easy for yourself) then it becomes a nicely-constructed but uninvolving exercise in playing International Disease Janitor 2012.

I wish to know more.

It's a lot more involved than the Munchkin game you bought to the cottage, but having played that has helped greatly. You still have the same race/class cards, weapons, armour etc, as well as treasures and monsters, but the game progresses somewhat along these lines:

Each person has three move tokens. Draw a DxM card, keep or play.

Decide which room to move into, either an established room or into the dark. If into the dark draw a new room and place it down. Doorways can cost between 0-3 moves to change between rooms.

New (dark) rooms always contain a monster. Battle monster. If you win, monster leaves. You can spend another move if you have one, looting the room, or moving on. If not, run away or take a hit (lose a health token or two) and perhaps die.

You get a D10 power that rests on a die roll for extra powers.

When your go is over, the monsters move. Monsters, like munchkins, can have modifiers, and some have movement rules. A die roll decides the monster movements and sometimes they can form mobs. Monsters can move through many rooms on their travels. If you get chased down by a mob of monsters it can be a bit 'eek'.

Battle deals and trades still apply.

A bit too much to explain, really. We shall have to set up a game with you and MrsA.

What kind of game length are you looking for, and what kind of skill/chance balance?

Really not fussed, Meems! Perhaps more skill-based I guess.

But anyway, after that post last night, I ordered Ticket to Ride Europe. I now realise the Nordic version caters to fewer players. Will we still be able to play Europe properly with two?

Map possibly too large. Might have issues with double routes.

Not fussed about game length, prefer skill over chance? How about Diplomacy*, it's better with the full 7 players but there are a few variants to make 2 player games possible/fun.
*Remember though, that it has been ending friendships** for over 50 years.

I really enjoy Carcassonne with two players. Also: Summoner Wars, but that might be a bit too Warhammer for some.

A few like-minded associates ambled over for a board games day between Christmas and New Year, and a predictably good time was had by all playing Dominion, Cosmic Encounter, Dominion, Forbidden Island, Dominion, Cthulhu Gloom, Sentinels Of The Multiverse and Dominion. Then we wrapped up with a game or two of Dominion.

Funniest moment of the day: playing Cosmic Encounter, I'd just failed in an attack which would have given me the 5th colony I needed to end the game. A chum was next and drew me to attack. Everyone predictably piled in to defend me, but with my good cards already expended while I was on the attack I didn't have anything left in reserve to defend myself. Suddenly! With the air of a grandmaster springing a shock checkmate, one of the other players threw down a card from his hand that effectively nullified the conflict and instead gave us a chance to negotiate a deal. My attacker and I looked at each other for a second, then down at the board.

"How about you take a colony on my world, I'll take a colony on yours and we win a joint victory?"

"Deal."

Mmmmmmm, sweet anticlimax.

The worst part of Cosmic Encounters is pile-on at 4-colonies and the negotiate to shared victories. They can often make the game a real chore. :(

A bit too much to explain, really. We shall have to set up a game with you and MrsA.

Yes, this.

IN OTHER NEWS:

Pandemic is an absolute bitch. It will be beaten. So very good though, with 5 cards (we dropped the difficulty for reasons I forget), we were the enxt player away from winning, but then an epidemic caused a chain reactino of outbreaks and it was game over.

EDIT: Oh, no, we made a mistake in the rules!

Quote:
The Researcher and the Medic are the only powers that can be used on someone else's turn. The Researcher can pass cards on others' turns (at the expense of the recipient's actions) and the medic can administer cures when it's not his turn (at no expense).

We could have won!
