For some reason every message I send using Gmail has suddenly started appearing back in my own inbox as well as the recipient's. Anyone have any clue what I might have inadvertently and idiotically done to cause this?

Hmm, disabling POP seems to have done the trick, although I've no idea what suddenly changed for this to start happening. :S

Gmail is shit at dealing with signatures.

First of all it kept putting my singature at the bottom of every email I sent - which includes forwards and replies. That looked stupid.

I fired up a lab and now it put it before the bit it's quoting but still adds it to replies and forwards. I only want it on stuff I compose :(

My gmail namesake (who can't remember his own email address) apparently has an appointment for cognitive behaviour therapy next week. I'm suddenly less inclined to find him and confront him over his stupidity...

Interestingly, the email was sent to both <my name>@gmail.com and <my name>@gmail.co.uk. Are they not the same account? Does gmail differentiate between .com and co.uk? I had it in my head that they classed them as the same account for some reason, but maybe I am confusing it with the stuff before the @.

It's also deeply flawed (or the mobile app is at least) when you've got a conversation with multiple people replying at different times; it only tells you about the most recent reply and you need to dig through the conversation thread to find any other ones you've missed. My sister complained about this when she was doing hen weekend organisation for her mate and I put it down to her Doing It Wrong but I then noticed it myself a few months later.

Anyway, why the hell are you using POP at all in this day and age?

I use pop because I only use onomatopoeic technologies.

This day and age being two years ago (and I don't think he was using POP)?

I perhaps should have mentioned my necromancy, in fairness.

My Gmail address is [email protected]

Someone else has [email protected]

Gmail regularly directs the someone else's e-mails to me. It's a right pain.

Is it possible to report this to Google?

That's really fucking poor. I think Google just totally ignore any and all external feedback about their services though don't they?

Gmail isn't directing someone else's email to you, that other person is giving out your email address thinking that is their own, it's exactly the same as what I get.

[email protected] is exactly the same as [email protected] according to gmail. It ignores any full stops before the @.

:this:

It also allows extensions after a + sign, so initialsurname+nameofwebsiteyouthinkmig ... @gmail.com will also work.

Jeez, Louise. Thanks for that. I am an honest sort, so always respond to the wrongly directed messages to notify the sender if it's an individual, but it's shocking how fat fingered the other person must be. I've had business confidential information, personal e-mails and all sorts. I might conduct a little mischief next time to teach them a lesson.

What astonishes me is out of a hundred or so emails i've sent to various people informing them of the mistake and asking if they can tell the guy that he doesn't own this email address, it is still happening. I've only had a response from half a dozen of the people who sent the emails, whereas if I had been sent an email like that, I would respond to the person, it's only polite I think.

I get email intended for a college professor in Utah regularly. All people do is miss his middle initial out of the email address. It depends how I'm feeling if they get a response. Any college email addresseses are already filtered but those sick students who were unable to make their class take their chances. Likewise, when I do inform people of the mistake only a small number came back apologising.
But now I've got their email Google thinks I know them and people are popping up in Google plus recommendations and I have no idea how to stop that.

I never hesitate to click the Forgot Password link in any of these emails and change the name on the account to Mr Idiot, or Mr IDontKnowMyEmailAddress or Mr BigGayBear.

You can delete existing people from your contacts. Look for autocomplete list deletion as well as they pop up there when you type an address if you've got it set to add any email you reply to to your contacts.

Oh yes, his twitter account got deleted, as he setup some sort of fake "celebrity" joke account. A quick password reset and it was mine to delete, really don't want that sort of bullshit associated with my email address, ta very much.

Try having a load of domains with catchall addresses. I used to get loads of stuff from one company that simply refused to add a 'g' to 'longford'.

Annoyingly, not all websites accept email addresses that include '+sendthisstraighttospamplease' but if they do it's a good trick to see who has been passing on your address.

Borrowing one of your bikes and registering for a race would be pretty amusing, but doubt I could get the sponsorship deal.

In fairness, I don't think the plus sign is valid in an email address.

I only ever had a problem once where a site let me register but their login form had more validation than their registration process.

Also: I'm thinking of buying [email protected] , as I own [email protected] (also without the dots, of course ;)), but I'm annoying as I hate my middle initial. Nothing but my bank account uses that initial. If I can get rid of that email address and change my bank-name, I can get rid of it. I'M FREE.

So how much should one cost? How can you 'sell' an email? What's to stop them giving me the 'password' and then running off with the money?

Man, I am such an idiot.

My email nemesis uses <firstname><surname>@gmail.com, I never use that myself personally.

One filter setup, one "idiot" label created, one minute's worth of effort and i'll never have to deal with his moronic bullshit ever again!
