Aye, that's always boggled my mind as well. I mean when making some hours long TV series it makes a tiny bit more sense, but when you watch a film that's only a couple of hours long and the core story is balls you do wonder how that's been able to happen.

The original screenplay will typically have far fewer holes. It's when you film 4 hours of material that needs to cram into a 2 hour film that bits of information are accidentally discarded.

Post subject:  Re: General Purpose UK TV thread

It's almost like they need to write the screenplay to fit into the length of film that they want to make.

Mrs. W and I have been gripped by Black Earth Rising, but with each episode we've had less and less idea what's going on. The finale didn't tie up any loose ends for us really.

We watched the first episode last night and enjoyed it a lot. Felt like I was on pretty solid ground in knowing what's going on, though suspect my trajectory of understanding will follow yours.

I'm a bit confused by The Little Drummer Girl, too. But maybe that's partly the objective. Apparently the ratings have halved since episode one.

I’ve read the book, and not that long ago. It’s a fucking awful adaptation, with shit acting and close to non existent narrative pacing. Literally fuck all happens for the first three episodes. I gave up after that.

Mrs.W and I disagreed a little about Trust. I was gripped by it, she less so. I thought Donald Sutherland's portrayal of a completely bonkers and ruthless J. Paul Getty was excellent, and Brendan Fraser as Chase, his fixer, amused me immensely. Luca Marinelli's Mafioso, Primo, was suitably and consistently scary, and yet his plans fell apart at various stages through misunderstandings and circumstances beyond his control. All in all, I very much enjoyed it.

Dunno, but it's still on iPlayer at the moment.

We've been watching Blood on Channel 5 all week. Just occasionally some of the camera work feels a bit Twin Peaks. It's all family secrets and lies, with Adrian Dunbar either having excuses for his suspicious behaviour or just avoiding answering direct questions about it, with each episode revealing a bit more info to confuse the armchair detectives. I always find him slightly disturbing anyway, so this plot suits him well. I hope it doesn't have a stupid ending.

Just watched the 90 minute one-off 'Tomorrow's World' special. Used to love that show growing up, and the special got the balance between new stuff and nostalgia just right.

My flying car, that they promised would be de rigeur by now, never turned up. And they never covered sex robots, did they? I still loved that TW though. I thought the Garrard Music Recovery Module was a work of genius. No more worries about, "I will not buy this record. It is scratched."

Weirdly, my abiding memory of that programme is not the show itself, but how it was featured on post-apocalyptic comedy ‘Not with a bang’, where the world ended when Judith Hann dropped a glass tube containing the ‘ageing hormone’, instantly killing almost everyone on earth.

No, though I do remember her from the same time. I had to look her up to find her name, but it’s Judith Hahn I was thinking of.

I always thought Maggie Philbin lacked credibility on that show. Maybe her being married to Cheggers was what undermined her for me, not that that makes any logical sense. Judith always had more gravitas.

I actually forgot Maggie Philbin was in it until I watched the special! Judith Hann and Howard Stableford were the ones I remember. Even though Judith only had guest role in the show, it was sufficient to remind me how authoritative and engaging a broadcaster she was. Howard, meanwhile, didn't appear to have aged at all and still kept the knowledgeable but more fun uncle act going.
