I did actually read it.

Your latter statement there is bobbins, by the way.

I think it's quite hard to do stuff in a fantasy setting that makes it good if that fantasy setting is the main driver of the plot. Take Game of Thrones (TV series): it's a book in a fantasy universe, yet the plot is primarily driven by the interactions outside of that setting, namely the political shiftings. BSG as well, as much as I've seen is more paranoia driven than "WE'RE IN SPACE FIGHTING ROBOTS!", and I don't think it suffers from it. Walking Dead suffers as the fantasy universe is the vehicle for the plotlines.

Whether this is because people are better at writing about stuff they've experienced or can research, or maybe we haven't had sufficient fights with robots, the undead, or dragons yet to be able to write decently about it, I dunno. Or, maybe, better writers don't write fantasy?

The comics of Walking Dead are about exactly the same thing as BSG, though: character interactions between flawed people desperately clinging to survival in the face of an overwhelming threat.

Do you think that comes across in the TV series? I ask, as I'm aware of the comics as I am of Bolivia.

It turns out that's it's a crossover with the film I Am Legend, and they found Will Smith twatting about in his car, using a baseball bat to knock over zombies and they had a chat, then he's looking after the women, and the blokes have gone to get some more guns.

Boring. Did they find the little girl?

The film 'Tremors' is a correct example of how to do this shit.

I love that film so much.

Are the sequels any good?

Right - Books 10-12 almost made me cry. Horrible, moving, wonderfully written, beautiful, horrible, horrible horrible horrible stuff.

S2E02 - Really, really good. After the "waiting for a zombie to jump out" of E01, this was much more people focused, but still managed to slip in a "jesus!" moment or two.

the bit where
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Hershel was operating on Carl whilst he was conscious to get out the firs t bullet fragment
also almost made m cry. Brought back too many memories of being a parent helplessly looking on in hospital, I guess.

And the bit where T Bone (or whatever his name is - I could just say "the black guy" as that would identify him more readily, but then that would be highlighting one of the problems with the show) looks in the back of the car was just horrid - they don't show much, well, anything much, but it's horrid. It's really, really well done. The fact the people can still feel horror over relatively small things after so long in a horrific situation is excellently done there.

An interesting 3rd episode and some character development in there - knowing the storyline from the graphic novels its interesting to see how much they are willing to change

Like the 'last breath' that Carl took , i thought - no you cant kill him off !
Although we do have Shane stuff happening now in the episodes where he was already dead / burried / re-killed in the comics by this point

Ooh, has episode 3 been on in the US then? I shall streamify it this evening.

It is interesting seeing what elements of the books they're picking up on late in the game now

Yip - there is also a 'fluff' piece on AMC after the show called "The Talking dead" , its 30 minutes and doesnt really cover very much but i grabbed this week for a look , you have a host (Chris Hardwick from Nerdist) plus Felicia Day and some other guy discussing a few points (okay 1 point) from the episode , a short talk with Gale Anne Hurd and a clip from next weeks show - the discussion did answer one question I had

I wasnt sure if the mark on Shanes head was a bite - but it was answered that it was actually a clump of his hair that was missing because it was pulled out when he struggled with Otis

I'm saving this up for Saturday night when Mrs K and the inlaws are watching the Stupid Dancing Show. I shall enjoy with some red wine and an open fire. Good to hear that it's improving (not that I thought it was bad to start with).

Yes. That's what I thought. But here's an intriguing question: why did he shave his head? Out of guilt (to hide the mark from others)... or out of aggression (to ensure he cannot get caught like that next time)?

I liked how it was handled. About the time we saw Shane clump grimly upstairs I started to get an "uh oh" feeling about what had happened, just as the show started to show me. So there was just the right amount of foreshadowing there, at least for me.

Interesting - I assumed guilt and didnt even consider it was done to stop it happening again - and I also thought something more was coming - however I *expected* a bite mark somewhere (which might be why I thought the head wound was a bite) - this was also a very bad episode to watch on an ipad at lunchtime - a lot of the stuff with Shane and Otis was very dark and it was difficult to see what was going on :-(

I figured it was a reference to shame/repentence, rather than to hide a bite, his cards are clearly marked now, and he knows it, and I thought it was some act to acknowledge this to the others.

All in all, a very good episode.

The lass asked if they had shut the gate on the way in, and the camera angle suggested the drive was long enough to diffuse any generator noise.

Oh come on, TK - it's not shite. It's not the comic books, no, but it's still one of the better things on telly at the moment.

To be honest I'm glad they've departed from the storylines of the comics, as otherwise I'd hsve no suspense at all. I was enjoying Game of Throne, but only to see how they'd do X or Y, or what Z would look like.

The problem with Game of Thrones is that there are too many characters that sound alike, and it's getting me increasingly confused.

Tyrion = Dwarf
Tywin = his dad.
Simples.

Yeah, but there's umpteen 'Sers', sons, daughters and other people, too.

Do you get confused in real life, then? There are millions of people called "Mr" something.

It's the sheer volume of people that have alike sounding names who are on side A, then on Side B, then they want their own side, and I forget who has done what. it's hard to tell at times who is important or not. For instance, there's the Onion Kinght, Ser sometingorother, and his three sons, who hangs about with Saal around Stannis's gaff, and in amongst them, tehre's the woman, some other sons, a maester or two, a sept and someone else. All have a biography going along with them, and I find it hard o tell what's relevant or not.

I've got it on the Kindle. And, in all fairness, tracing a family tree whilst reading a novel isn't great fun.
