Just booked tickets to SXSW for next year, with a road trip along the Gulf of Mexico afterward! Any car hire tips would be appreciated. Would like to hire a convertible mustang.

Awesome. That'll be an awesome trip. If you can, go to Franklins in Austin - as long as you don't mind queueing most of the morning.

Mini yay, but after three and a half weeks, my Dad is home from hospital. He's not out of the woods yet, but the hospital seem to have a better idea of what is causing him his problems so have said he can go home and take a six-week course of varying antibiotics to try and sort it all out. So I imagine he's sat in front of the telly now :)

If you asked him, he'd probably moan about the hospital, doctors, nurses etc, but I can't fault them. All last week, they had an interpreter with him from 9-5, as you could never be certain when a doctor would want to speak to him. Thankfully they varied the interpreters each day as it must be crushingly boring to spend all day with a couple of deaf people you don't know while everyone else on the ward is in a bit of a state.

That is good news.. Similarly my dad came out of hospital yesterday! I'm off to see him tonight to see how he's coping back at home.

Prom tickets for Mahler's 2nd Symphony ('The Resurrection') in mid-August got! High up in the gods, but still a seat nonetheless. And the friend I'm going with has got slightly better seats for a Rachminov/Tchaikovsky prom at the end of that month! I'll have to pay the difference in cash or beer...

Mahler night! Excited. I've never heard the 2nd live, and it's not one I've listened to that much, so have high expectations. I did have to explain to my mum when I said I was going to the Proms that 'no, I won't be singing along'.

I think all the normal car hire places will offer a convertible muscle car category, I wrangled a (hardtop) 'Stang out of Enterprise last time I was in California. [1] But it'll be the baby one, with the 4-cylinder turbo engine, which is likely not what you want [2]. You may need to find a specialist rental place for the V8 Mustang GT.

[1] Which I got for free through some upgrade programme I get to be in through my employer. I showed up with a "midsized" rental price and was told "you can take any car from the Executive aisle." My second choice if I'd missed the last Mustang was an Escalade.
[2] It's still 310 bhp and RWD mind, it was pretty fun to drive, particularly once I found the Sports Plus and Track mode toggles. And it projects a pony on the ground when you open the door: http://imgur.com/tmP9SaQ

Thanks for that. I'm going to do more research, but suspect I'll not need a car while we're in Austin, so may do some on the ground searching while we're there for the six days the festival is on.

My 2nd eldest son has done enough in his GCSEs to get onto his chosen A-Level courses, including getting an 8 in Maths and a distinction in ECDL (some IT thing apparently worth 8.5 out of 9 on the new grading system)

He is really pleased, he got a couple of Cs and Ds, but got Bs (or equivalent) and above in English and Science.

One less headache for me to worry about...

ECDL is (or was) the European Computer Driving License.

I had to do it once because reasons and it was painfully simple.

I assume the school one is different.
