I appear to have a new job with the National Centre for Social Research, subject to not making a dick of myself on the induction course at the end of the month.

It's a long and complicated story, but what it boils down to is that we can't compete against the big players in this industry, so we're moving into a niche area which takes a long time to make any money. But we need some income now, so we're both taking on full time jobs and doing the niche work in the evenings. We're licensed to operate until Feb 2012 so we'll keep going until then and then decide whether or not to renew our license, depending on whether it's profitable to do so. We're also moving out of our premises, as we can't really afford to stay here, and we don't need them for the way we'll be operating from now on.

Saw the pic, instantly knew it was Santorini.

Went there in 2001. Beautiful island, loved it. The trip out to the volcano is very cool, plus you can go and have dinner on a boat in the caldera. Black sand beaches. Good food. Excellent wine. But above all, you must, simply must take the opportunity to watch the sunset at Ia. Sitting there with one-day-to-be-Mrs P was spine-tinglingly beautiful and perfect.

A fantastic choice for your honeymoon.

I've been doing this a lot this month, having more money coming in doesn't seem to be making me any better off, stupid car doesn't help.

I've not got to that level, but I have made sure I spend less by thinking abotu the necessity of every purchase - even down to "do I really need to buy this can of coke, or could I just drink the free water in the office?". That old saying about pennies and pounds may be trite, but it's true.

I went through a phase of managing my financies in ridiculous levels of detail.

Then I realised that I'm genetically bound to blow all my money on stupid crap that I don't need, like cars, iPhone-controlled quadracopters, MAME cabinets, pool tables and cleaners.

Frankly, I'm amazed I'm not living out of a cardboard box.

The gammy leg stocking is off. Hooray!

I've been doing spectacularly, unintentionally well with money.

Well, I was until I blew £620 on a painting for Hel, for her birthday and our one year anniversary and also am taking her to Australasia tomorrow night where they do tiny fillet steaks of wagyu beef (not even from Japan, it's Australian) for £40.

She deserves it for putting up with me.

Hooray for removed gammy leg stockings.

My opinion is the reason you're careful with money is so that you *can* do the stuff you want with it, like treating your missus to a slap up meal out. You don't have to skip many takeaways and coffees and pointless bits of tat to get a decent night out that actually means something.

Actually, I think it's more the case that I've forgotten how to buy vast quantities of shit. I haven't a BluRay in... months, now.

Is that a lot? We have to pay about £30 for 16Mb. Our monthly phone bill varies between £150 and £200. Because our mobiles are on the bill too. And I'm naughty...

Everyone with broadband is on 16Mb over here, the only difference is what download limit you have.

It's shitloads (edit: oh, unless that includes TV and phone as well?). I pay £18/mo for 40mbps with a 40GB cap, though it'd be £28/mo for "unlimited" and 'up to 10mbps' upload instead of 2mbps, and it's one of the more expensive non-cable packages.

Ha! If you're in front of a computer often enough, I recommend the free Gnucash. Little bit of setting up, but give it some broad categories (rather than trying to categories absolutely every purchase) and it'll soon be obvious where the cash goes. Plus once you're sorted you can see your net worth go up month on month*.

I can has verbal contract offer. Six months, in Liverpool. Right next to Paddys Wigwam.

Which means an end to our little Irish adventure. I'll miss living in Dublin but I'll be able to travel to work on the train and come home to be with Mrs P, and that is what really matters.

Car: sold!

I am a bit gutted about it, I have to say, I bloody loved that car and I didn't get quite as much for it as I would've liked, but then it did need a few things doing. One of the tyres needed replacing immediately (the guy that bought it took it straight to a local tyre place as it wasn't so much bald as a racing slick), one of the side skirts needs realigning, the bonnet arguably needs a respray (many stone chips)... anyway, it's done and my financial position doesn't look quite so glum.

True to his word, my amazing younger brother (who I'm living with at present) immediately got on the phone to his insurance company and added me to the insurance for his '98 Toyota Celica. Even better, he has actively discouraged me from buying another car just yet, as he's told me that to all intents and purposes I can just take it as and when I like, which I wasn't expecting. To be fair, the guy works in London and rarely ever uses his car, it can literally sit on our drive untouched for months at a time, so in a way I think he's just glad it'll be getting some use. All he wants in return from me is for me to pay for the tracking issue to be sorted out (it veers very slightly to the left at the moment) and to give it a clean. Other than it being a bit grubby and the radio not remembering stations programmed in (I'd imagine it wasn't installed properly), the car is great and drives brilliantly, certainly I can't argue when it's being provided effectively for free!

Adding to the awesome, I was talking to my family about how surprisingly lovely to drive my bro's Celica is. My dad then took me to one side later and told me that if I wanted my own, bearing in mind that even the latest shape Celicas are not too pricey nowadays if you're happy settling for the 1.8 VVTi, he'd gladly help me financially to buy one. I'm going to leave it a few months at least though, see how things go with sharing my brother's car.

But wait: there's more! I've spent the last week or so chatting to a really lovely girl online who lives fairly close to me, we've been getting on brilliantly and are planning to meet up on Tuesday. Also, she's a trainee manager at Kwik Fit and reckons it'll cost about £31 to sort out that tracking problem! :P

Could it be things are finally starting to work out a bit nicer for me? In fact the only downside lately is I've been ill since last Monday night, originally with stomach bug symptoms, now with flu-like symptoms. Not sleeping very well with endless fever-dreams, constantly feel like I'm running a temperature, it's a bit shit. But hey ho, hopefully I'll recover in time for Tuesday.

It probably doesn't have a permanent live, or the permanent and switched live connections are the wrong way around. It's easy to fix if it bothers you.
