I currently use Azureus Vuze for all my torrent needs but man, is it painfully slow to load up and a resource hog to boot!

So, here I am.. asking you lovely people for your recommendations for the best client to use.

I'm after something real simple as all I do is download and upload. I don't care about categories, media servers, adverts and such like.. i just want something simple that will load really quick and let me get on using my PC.

Is this to much to ask? I use pretty much all of the popular torrent sites too.. If that matters? I've heard it does.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I have no idea if the tech-savvy will give it a thumbs up or down, but utorrent seems simple and easy for my legal torrenting needs.

I'll third utorrent.

It uses hardly any ram, it has all the essential features, and no bloat. I've never had any problems with it.

Yup. uTorrent. As well as not having spyware and such, it 'plays nice', unlike some clients that can *maybe* lead to faster downloads, but can also lead to being banned from certain torrent trackers.

It feels like it's open source, even though it's not, if that makes any sense.

Partition Magic totally fucked me over a few times. I've twice had to recreate a blanked out partition structure entirely from hand-calculated values, one of the most technically badass stunts I've ever pulled off.

Peter Norton dies a little inside every time Norton Corp release each new bloated, buggy, crapware fuckfest.

And Norton Ghost isn't even Ghost any more -- the fuckers killed the ongoing Ghost development and rebranded the inferior PartionMagic program, whose previous name I forget, as a Ghost product.

I use the BitTorrent client and it's surprising how more advanced it's become.

Didn't BitTorrent Inc buy uTorrent, and for all intents and purposes the main BT client is now merging code bases with uTorrent?

Essentially, yeah. Bits of uTorrent have started popping up in the official client as a result. Not literally, but, yeah.

I also like uTorrent very much.

Someone told me you can control it using a WAP phone but I would never need this feature so didn't look into it, there's a chance it could all be lies.

Anyway - uTorrent.

I find torrentz.com to be quite good at finding perfectly legal torrents, too. However! I suspect it has some less legal ones, too.

It definitely does. It's still not illegal to link to torrent sites, by the way ;)

I suggest you try your new legal, free BitTorrent client out with the new, legal, free NIN album, The Slip, torrents for which are available from The NIN website. Unless you hate NIN, or only want MP3s, or already have it, in which case I un-suggest you.

I have already got it thanks.. I downloaded it yesterday. I'm not a massive fan as such but I do like them.. I've got a couple of their albums anyway.

Thanks for the suggestion/un-suggestion!

That means exactly what I think it means, captain pedantic. If it's going to make you happier I can add the word 'primarily'.

I suspect CUS is about to point out that torrent files only have a hash code in them and don't contain any actual illegal data. I've never quite known how I feel about that defence. The geek in me thinks it's really elegant, the cynic in me suspects that if ever a court case turned on that definition you would probably lose. It's not like a torrent file (of something illegal) can really be used for anything other than an illegal download.

Yes, but their primary purpose is to give people links to said material, so it's really a semantic debate.

No, it's their primary purpose to link to files. Whether or not that material is copywritten is immaterial. See also: Google. In the case of say, http://www.torrentz.com, it is a website that links to other websites, in relation to files found as part of non-specific 'trawls'. This is an important distinction.
Quote:

It'd make me happier if suggestions regarding the wording of the legal boilerplate for this forum, which you obviously have an interest in, to be debating it in the first place, weren't treated as pedantry required to make me happy.

Whatever. Leave it as it is then.

More accurately, their purpose is to give them a link to a possible link to.

If we don't like 2 stages removed then how many stages is ok? Google links to many places that "primarily exist to do that" for instance.

It's not a terribly easy call.

Yeah, we do all generally see eye-to-eye - I'm sure your optimism will be completely rewarded.

INCIDENTALLY I will be posting something tomorrow/later. It will look like copywritten pirated material and my thread will have its topic icon changed, various threads merged in and out, and then finally I'll be forced to wear a Nazi uniform and report to duty (;)). But it's not, so please don't any Modz get too zealous when they see it, now. No, really.

ALSO er, Forza 2 OST wtf?

Just so I know where we stand, is it ok to link to specific torrents which are legal, for example, Soundtrack To A Vacant Life, by The Flashbulb, which the guy himself uploaded to various torrent sites?

Well my concern would be that the site I would be linking to does host torrents which can be used to assist copyright infringement, even if the specific torrent doesn't

Ah, I see. I could not say. Although, the official legal BitTorrent site contains downloadable software that can be used to obtain illegal copies of pirated movies off the Internet on computers. It's all a bit silly really.

Hey, you're not to download it if you haven't already got it.
And I didn't make all the rules, you know.

Yeah, good point Goatboy. TheVision - have you tried uTorrent? That's probably the best for Windows.
