I have just phoned my misbegotten offspring and ordered them to start downloading this so that it'll be ready for RUNNY JUMPY CLIMBY FUN upon my return. Cheers, Lave.

I do hope it's good, I like to be surprised and first person platform action never struck me as a fun thing so I'm going to take some convincing that an entire game based around it is a good idea.

Played the demo and I won't be buying it in a hurry. It's not shit or anything it's just not for me, it's exactly the sort of game that I know will just piss me off.

Just to expand a bit on it, the game doesn't seem to offer me what I was hoping for, specifically the dizzying feelings of vertigo that I got from playing Crackdown. I put this down to the fact that the huge heights in this game seem thus far to be effectively an illusion. In Crackdown you felt like you were high up because you actually climbed to get there so you had that investment to lose by falling.

I don't want to over hype this, as it could easily kill the game for you. It's a very strange game as it tickles my shmup pleasure centres (which is ironic considering it's a game that gives you an achievement for not using a game).

Lave's Demo Review by Lave
Download the demo and play it. if you don't think you'll like it don't read the following - just play the demo.
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
It's good. Really good. Finished the demo and immediately replayed it. It's very. very much a time trial game. I made me suspect/hope that the moans by Game(TM) about checkpoints is actually because they don't mesh with the intention of the game. At every stepl I think it's trying to make you flow through the game. But like shmups that a lot of that comes through having played the level before. Long check points are, I suspect, to stop you chipping through the game without getting better at it.

It's a purchase for me. (When I can afford it :( )

DAMN YOU GUYS YOU NEED TO PLAY THIS GAH.

I've played the demo through 4 times now and it just gets better with each play. It is wonderful. If there is any justice in the world this will revolutionise FPSs.

Fuck your fucking fallout 3. Fucks.

I did indeed very much enjoy the demo. I can see me being very stop-starty with it though, as the "go to red" mechanic isn't always apparent. I'm sure it's something that'll improve once I start getting the flow.

I can't get the wall run - turn around - jump to ledge bit of the tutorial to work for me. It keeps telling me "failed" and making me repeat it. I was enjoying it too.

I found the red mechanic really excellent. It's clearly a game designed to be played numrous times though (which I think explains the long checkpoints GAME mentioned but which aren't in the demo)

I really like it :DD

Thinking about trading some stuff in - or selling it - so I can get it asap...

EDIT: Doctor Glyndwr: I did that first time spazzooo! I imput it very quickly, don't wait for visual feedback just tap-tap-tap to about the ryththm of your foot falls.

Left bumper for half a second as you get to the wall, then right bumper left bumper fast.

I liked it a lot. Boo to EA for making me get a pre-order code for race mode, though.

Well mine's been on pre-order with Play for a good month now, and I've received bugger all in the form of codes.

I've been up for an hour! Don't you just love kids?
I'm setting up a time trial for us all now - one sec...

Okay, so start the clock as soon as you gain control over Faith (this is on the actual game, not the training, you can skip that in the pause menu). Stop the clock again as soon as you hit the blue mat at the end. Don't skip the scene where you hand the bag over (or the scene during which you hit the blue mat, obv).

My best time: 3:35

Whoo 3:19! I fluffed a couple of landings and grabbed the right-hand pipe, but unless there's a route I don't know about that's going to take some beating. Double wall-run jumps FTW!

I'm ashamed to say that it took me about a dozen goes to realise what the game wanted me to do to escape the roof at the end. I'm going to absolutely suck at this. And yet, it's totally bloody wonderful. It's got "Birthday Money Buy" written all over it.

Yeah I'm stuck on the roof bit now. I can see some red scaffolding, but have no idea how to get onto it.

3.41 With quite a lot of fluffs.

Oooh, I'm going to love the time trial mode.

I don't get on with this at all. It's unintuitive, confusing and doesn't mark where you're supposed to go well at all.

I like the idea, can see what they're doing, can't play it at all.

Looking at another forum this view point occasionally pops up too, but I really don't understand it. The 'run at red things and figure out on the fly' strategy works brilliantly. It's the first 3D platformer where I haven't got lost.

It's the most intuitive, clear and clearly defined platformer i've probably ever played.

Saying that depending on how long it is, I am tempted to play it first without runners vision on so it's more like a puzzle game.

There are no red things in sight for large portions of the game, most notably in my short play the runs up to the 2 pipes where there's nothing on the entire building until you figure out to go round the back.

Or at least nothing I could see, which at the speed you're supposed to play this is exactly the same thing.

I have thought of one thing that would make it 1000x better (and maybe it's an option I missed), press jump to jump WHEN I REACH THE EDGE, it's impossible to judge pixel perfect leaps when you've no idea where your feet are.

I guess my main problem with it is that it's pretty much a platform game and I don't really like platform games all that much. So I think I'll just not buy it and never comment on it again.

Hope this works on my PC decently enough. I'm only slightly above minimum spec with a 2.5XP, but my GFX card and RAM is a fair bit more than they ask for.

If not, I'll bully my X-Box 360 owning housemate into getting it, once he shifts his arse and gets his RROD'd machine fixed. Grrr. (And yes, I've explained to him how, but he's incorrigably lazy.) Also, he keeps his console in his bedroom with a monitor, instead of the universally approved spot of living-room big-TV space. Double bah!

We'll have one in each location soon :)

With the absurdly cheap Arcade pack now (although I got the Pro PES pack because my brother wanted the extras) it's actually a realistic prospect for me to have my main bedroom 360 and one in the lounge for occasional big screen gaming but mostly media goodness.

Indeed, if you actually want to game, stick the appropriate HDD in. I'll have a spare 20 for the media centre itself anyway because my brother is giving me that and £50 for the 60gb HDD, PES and Controller from the Pro pack I bought but that'll just be a few ripped CDs and the odd demo I suspect.

Effectively I'll have paid £119 for a new Xbox for myself with new 3 year warranty and quieter operation while the refurb is the one that'll hit the lounge where it'll get an easier life and should last longer that way (it slips out of warranty on christmas day).

I quite like it but I find it off-putting making jumps when you can't see your feet. That pipe jump is very difficult. I can see it getting very frustrating in later levels as difficulty is ramped up. I'll wait until one is traded in at the stall I think. Though hang on, no one's going to actually buy it so that's never going to happen..

This is a fun game.

However, I don't like the control set-up. You can probably customise this, but LB and LT to do pretty much everything? Nuh-uh!

I haven't quite got the hang of the controls yet. I raced through the tutorial without really having to repeat anything, but sometimes during the demo itself I was just hammering the buttons to achieve the desired result as opposed to doing anything carefully.

I'll play it a few more times, for sure. What the quickest way to get past the second guard who is shooting at you? I just popped him in the head with the gun and ran on past him, but I suspect that's against the spirit of the game, if not the rules.

:)

Yeah the controls are not what I'd choose, though I'm sure I can redefine them. What does make me tiurn the thing off, though, is the tutorial restarts - miss a jump and you've got to watch the annoying character do it perfectly again, whether you want to or not. Which I bore as far as the wall jump... rb,lb,rb or 'tother way around - I've never been proficient at combos on certian keys on certain pads, and this is a weak spot. SO JUST LET ME GET ON WITH IT! How is watching that girl do it again and again going to help me learn how bettter to hit a three-button-combo, which is writen at the bottom of the screen? Particularly seeing as you watch them do it, then doing it oneself is in first person, and looks TOTALLY DIFFERENT AS A RESULT.

Gah. I'll surely own this, but I'll probably never play it much, or buy it new, or anything.

The tutorial repeats were annoying. Watching the other girl offers no solution to your problems. Still once that's out of the way you're fine.

I managed to have a play of this when I was at my brother's for the weekend. Really enjoyed it, but there were a few 'what do I do here? Oh, that' type situations that did seem to be against the free-flowing spirit of the game.
Microsoft, you now have a deadline by which I'd really like my 360 back.

It wasn't just me that shot the woman in the tutorial was it? :D

I don't have a problem with the controls other than I think it's odd that they are on the left trigger/bumper. It they're the buttons you'll be pressing the most I bloody want them on the right hand side.

... and I shot the woman. Even before I was told not to.

Ah, yes. It is excellent fun. I love the "Oh no, where do I go next?" panic thing, it's proper challenging, and the implementation is superb. I can in no way sympathise with the whole 'jumps must be pixel perfect' criticisms. I reckon there's quite a large margin for error and the game actually appears to be a bit overly generous in terms of allowing you to grab onto things that are really too far out of reach sometimes.

But what the hell were they thinking with the default controls? Madness. Once you swap them over to something sensible it's much more intuitive.

Got my fake-time-trial down to 3:31 with plenty of fuck ups still in it.

But curious at how Grim... has 12 seconds on me I found this.

Gulp.

I've been playing like an idiot.

It helps that there are big beacons and arrows in their game, unlike mine...

Yeah the time trial mode looks ace. Thank God they are cutting the levels up into little managable runs.

Grim... if you want to try and go faster having you been 'coiling'? This is where you pull your feet up with the left trigger (in the training you use it to jump the wire) it lets you avoid lots of bits where you have to pull yourself up. It also makes the stairwells steps a single jump each - but then that video showed me you don't really need to use the stairs. 8)

How long has it been that new demos are only available to Live Gold members with availability for Silver members a few days later? Or has it always been like this?
Always, I think. It's a feeble attempt to make Gold people feel like they are getting more than just the ability to play online. All it does is annoy Silver members though.

I've completed this demo through several times now. It's wonderful, heady stuff. I don't know if the game is for me though; I suspect the leaderboard competition in the time trial mode will be the meat and potatoes of the game for most people, but will be very hardcore indeed. That video is fantastic.

That's an excellent find, Lave, thanks. Wow, I've been taking roughly the slowest possible route. :D

I really don't know whether to get this on PC or EggBox. On the one hand, I suck at first-person console games and true to form I keep screwing things up because of control-based confusion, on the other I'd miss BezzieFun if I got it on PC.

Downloaded it but still not played it yet (forgot about it due to Dead Space being brilltoid). I'll have a go tonight though.

Indeed I like the fact that it's making you appreciate Pakour/Freerunning and al that jazz. For the time trials you really need to unlearn the 'ooh, steps! I'll follow those' feeling. Everytime so far I've awkwardly pushed myself past the guard on the blue steps. It never even occured to me to look for another way.

Hmm, I think the time trials will make this game. So Bezzie Leaderboards FTW and that. But then if you can't use a controller being at the bottom of the time trials wouldn't be too much fun..

After Grim... et als musings about it. It's my second most wanted game after Mirror's edge. Moreso than Fable 2 and Fallout 3.
