Both of those roles revolve around ejecting fast moving pieces of metal in a fixed direction. Compared to, say a Swiss Army knife or a computer or a car or even a Bowie knife or those assault shovel things, that's not particularly general.

It is general for a machine gun, I think. I think the designation is due to the fact that there were a number of different classifications of machine gun back in WW1-WW2 period, effectively from light up to heavy, each having a specific purpose.

In other improbable news, I was coming back from town and it began to rain a fair bit. Seeking shelter in a nearby pub, I bought a pint and used their toilets. I then saw the advert saying if I bought a Jack Daniels I could win something or other. I read the T&C's at the bottom, and it said "No purchase necessary". So, on leaving I asked for a card, the barman said I needed to buy one, i showed him the T&C's and he gave me a scratchcard. I now have a Jack Daniels rafia cowboy hat, and very rakish it is, too.
