I would just like to reiterate that the topic of topic icons, of dimlies, of smilies - in reverse order the mods here have said 'What do people want to do with this? Every chance has been provided for people to have their say. It doesn't take long to say 'I'm not in favour'. It's better to be a bit of a pest all the time, as a constant checking system, than to just explode every so often and take out those around you. Speaking generally :bows:

No. 'm saying in general, I wish people would voice their concerns as and when they have them, when the issues arise, and am generally ruminating on this. Offering an example of what happens otherwise is not meant to say this thread is full of explosions. Either people don't want to be asked if they want stuff, and how they want stuff; or, people are missing seeing being asked.

I think it's a combination of people not necessarily twigging to the ramifications of a proposal until it's up an running (hello terminal 5!), and others not actually being around for the decision making. If rules are going to be on the "comments now or forever hold your piece" basis, then the opening time for comments would need to be at least two weeks to take account of people off on holidays. Hmm... if I must take a view, then topic dimlies should be inserted when missing. It sounds like a sensible enough policy to me. (If I recall, Something Awful has a bunch of thread topic banners down the left hand side also, and that works.) And I just think that it looks neater when there's a full dimlie count. Though, if the mods want their responsibilities to include going through each thread and poking about with big pictures, dodgy quoting and what-have-you rather than being called upon by the ! button then a new idea presents itself: new topics are always set to a dimlie with a ! on it. (For topics that may contain NSFW, big pictures, large flash files...) When the topic is checked by a mod and is shown to be excellent, a dimlie can be appointed by them. A RULING TO BE UNQUESTIONED. On reflection, that sounds like a pain in the bum. (But that's what you get for sitting on mirrors.) No great shakes to me, really. If the forum gets a magic 'show only ones with these on' button, then logically people creating topics that they want to see interest in will give them appropriate dimlies. To omit the dimlie would be foolish.

Clearly Dimilies are an idea that can live or die on their own merits. If people use them then they'll live. If people don't like them then they won't use them, and fade out on their own. Obviously their success is independent of Dimrill's excellent art work. Personally I think they are great and Grim...'s work on the RSS is amazing. Amazing amazing. For that I want them to live. But if people want to make them without. That is also fine. It's just their topic won't appear in the seperate RSS feeds or whatever (if we manage that). 'Encouragment' to use Dimilies to denote sections isn't needed, because if they are popular (which they are at present) then people who don't use them will see less posts from the people who sort by topic. Wanting your thread to be 'popular' is all the encouragment people need. I think now we need to let in dig in for a while and see what naturally emerges. It's always hard when equals have to start moderating each other so we need to be careful not to hurt each others feelings whilst also be quite firm about things. Putting the comment and Dimile on Dr A's post was a foe-par but it came from the right place. Let's not forget Grim has done phenomenal work pulling this forum together. He's a living legend for this. Hugs to you all.
