Might I suggest that if you wanted them to be mandatory then the "none" option should not have been there?

We considered that Malc, but figured that we'd just get loads with the first icon in the list if we did that.
You'll be pleased to hear that I actively resisted putting something that forced you to choose one.
Poor Dimmers - his little men have caused so much grief :(

See, this is what happens when MR SMILEY BUT SLIGHTLY REGRETFUL FACE disappears from common usage,

MR GRINNY WINKY FACE

But yeah, fair enough, but I thought that perhaps it didn't need changing in the first place. As Malc says there's a "none" option.

I would just like to reiterate that the topic of topic icons, of dimlies, of smilies - in reverse order the mods here have said 'What do people want to do with this? Every chance has been provided for people to have their say.

It doesn't take long to say 'I'm not in favour'. It's better to be a bit of a pest all the time, as a constant checking system, than to just explode every so often and take out those around you.

Speaking generally :bows:

If anyone exploded it was me, in fairness (mainly because the filtering system was being such a cunt to code (especially with the Grimlet screaming in my ear)). Soz - I still love you all :luv:

No, I get your point. I'm just not agreeing, because it's your opinion. Your point is your opinion, and I'm afraid I don't entirely agree. I do mostly agree, however. Very mostly such. I am attempting to present options and potential compromises. I am hoping everyone can move on from throwing rocks over low walls at each other, and instead all get into a groovy circle, and devise Entente.

See above comment about explosions.

If the polite disagreement in this thread constitutes a big bust up, you should really avoid spending Christmas with my folks, chap. MR BIG WINKY GRINNY FACE, WITH SLIGHT GRIMACE AT REMEMBERING LAST CHRISTMAS.

No. 'm saying in general, I wish people would voice their concerns as and when they have them, when the issues arise, and am generally ruminating on this. Offering an example of what happens otherwise is not meant to say this thread is full of explosions.

Either people don't want to be asked if they want stuff, and how they want stuff; or, people are missing seeing being asked.

I think it's a combination of people not necessarily twigging to the ramifications of a proposal until it's up an running (hello terminal 5!), and others not actually being around for the decision making. If rules are going to be on the "comments now or forever hold your piece*" basis, then the opening time for comments would need to be at least two weeks to take account of people off on holidays.

*Yes.

Hmm... if I must take a view, then topic dimlies should be inserted when missing. It sounds like a sensible enough policy to me. (If I recall, Something Awful has a bunch of thread topic banners down the left hand side also, and that works.)

And I just think that it looks neater when there's a full dimlie count.

Though, if the mods want their responsibilities to include going through each thread and poking about with big pictures, dodgy quoting and what-have-you rather than being called upon by the ! button then a new idea presents itself: new topics are always set to a dimlie with a ! on it. (For topics that may contain NSFW, big pictures, large flash files...) When the topic is checked by a mod and is shown to be excellent, a dimlie can be appointed by them. A RULING TO BE UNQUESTIONED.

On reflection, that sounds like a pain in the bum.
(But that's what you get for sitting on mirrors.)

No great shakes to me, really.

If the forum gets a magic 'show only ones with these on' button, then logically people creating topics that they want to see interest in will give them appropriate dimlies. To omit the dimlie would be foolish.

Don't you just tend to ignore them when there's a full complement? I do a bit, which is a shame because they are nice icons, and it would be fun to sometimes have occasion to use one, which would make your thread stand out a bit.

Mandatoryness just doesn't sit well with me, I guess. Perhaps because it's not a real word.

It does, there's one called "Shit Post" which is inserted if one is not chosen.

Maybe. Never really thought about it. Sometimes they can be a bit difficult to tell apart, being blue on grey.

Doesn't bother me all that much though, 'cause I read the words.

Clearly Dimilies are an idea that can live or die on their own merits. If people use them then they'll live. If people don't like them then they won't use them, and fade out on their own.

Obviously their success is independent of Dimrill's excellent art work.

Personally I think they are great and Grim...'s work on the RSS is amazing. Amazing amazing. For that I want them to live.

But if people want to make them without. That is also fine. It's just their topic won't appear in the seperate RSS feeds or whatever (if we manage that).

'Encouragment' to use Dimilies to denote sections isn't needed, because if they are popular (which they are at present) then people who don't use them will see less posts from the people who sort by topic.

Wanting your thread to be 'popular' is all the encouragment people need.

I think now we need to let in dig in for a while and see what naturally emerges. It's always hard when equals have to start moderating each other so we need to be careful not to hurt each others feelings whilst also be quite firm about things.

Putting the comment and Dimile on Dr A's post was a foe-par but it came from the right place. Let's not forget Grim has done phenomenal work pulling this forum together. He's a living legend for this.

Hugs to you all.

I go play GTA4, and the internet goes kablooie.

Anyway, as CUS has explained in most excellent fashion, the icons were put in place to help people filter out things they didn't want to read, as an assist for people who don't have time to read the whole forum, as well as for those that were commenting on 'signal-to-noise' ratio. Note that this all takes significant effort on mostly (well, completely) Grim...'s part.

If they're not on every post, the idea becomes redundant, so us mods have been adding an appropriate one when we see there hasn't been one chosen.

As there was outspoken distress at mods making changes without letting people know what and why, comments are added.

I hope DrA wasn't actually planning to leave over this, because this forum is new, and we're faced right now with a case of trying to please all of the people all of the time, which is a pretty impossible prospect. No-one wants to force anyone to do anything - us mods are here to assist with the good clean fun of the forum, not get in the way.

Give us some time people, and don't shy away from letting us know what you think of, well, anything really - we're all trying hard to make this a place where everyone who is excellent wants to be.

Peace out.

I've posted my opinion on modding before, but I'll post it again here. If the idea here is for the mods to help the place become how everyone wants it, rather than to impose a view, no matter how reasonable that viwe may seem to them, changing something should be a last resort. If there's a problem, they should contact the poster via PM, and ask them to change whatever the problem is, be it an icon, the size of a picture, the title of a thread, a link to somewhere inappropriate, or whatever. If this is too much work, and it probably would be more work, then fair enough, but it's the only "excellent" solution I can think of.

Anyhoo - what's the film where the guy says "I am not having a good day!" and bangs the table on 'not'? I wanted to say it earlier but couldn't remember the name.

Hmm - it may have been in Red Dwarf, actually.

I don't know what it is, but if you remember it, please let me know, as this has been bugging me for months. I don't think it is Red Dwarf. I convinvced myself at one point that it was Cube Zero, but it isn't.

It is Red Dwarf, the episode Duct Soup. It's the one where Lister got Kochanski a bath, and they spend hours stuck in the air ducts. Lister says it just after he and the Cat are blown down the shafts by the drying cycle.

Ever heard of the straw that brakes a camels back aye? The nature of the forum has changed a lot. It isn't suiting everyone, and it's not down to bloody dimlies.

seriously, please think whether thats the right route for a mod to take.

As said before (by someone other than me), if you don't like it, you know where the door is. I think we're doing a bloody good job considering the amount of moaning twats on here at the moment.

And I think you've been doing an excellent job too. Very, very much so.

But seriously you are very much out of line calling Dr A a cunt.

This.
I'd tell him off, but I fear the repercussions.

Turn out that we mods now daren't do anything unless it's been reported (using the button that Isn't Good Enough, of course), so actually you 'normals' are now under more pressure than us! HA!

I said that anyone who is going to leave this forum due to topic icons is a cunt. That is not the same thing. As you said previously, you believe it to be a number of things that has lead him to make this decision.

That does not equal the same thing.

Yes, it's Red Dwarf, and it's Lister who says it, but I'm buggered sideways and upside down if I can remember the episode or the scene.

[EDIT]Blimey, Google is wonderful - it was in Duct Soup apparently, but he doesn't bang on a table when he says it, so you both might be thinking of something else entirely.

ARRRRRRRRGH.

Is anyone else sick of every other thread being about Mods doing this or not doing that, and/or calling people a cunt?

There's a time and place for calling people a cunt, and it's CERTAINLY NOT when people are expressing their opinions and concerns. Especially when it's someone proven to be Quite Excellent like Ashens.

As I see it, Mods are coming up with ideas think and fast, based one what people think they want. Newsflash, people never know what they want. They just want it to "jus' work, loike".

Let's slow down the pace, chill out, and put a ban on calling someone a cunt for a few days while we sort this mess out. People's flippancy while trying to dealing with this really isn't helping.

See Grim...s answer at the top of the page. One of the highlights of series 8, and something I have found myself saying since.

I don't think he's made any decision. I think he was annoyed, was flippant about his annoyance and went to bed.

I agree that doesn't equal the same thing. But regardless your comment came across as unhelpful, unkind and aimed at him. You have to choose your words more carefully as a mod man.

Obviously that comes across as being aimed at him, no matter how funny his internet videos are.

But I'm not trying to make this an argument. And it's just about this one call, I think you've (all) been doing great.

It's late. Love and Kisses.
