It's (recently I believe) been added to Gamepass. It's backwards compatible too so it'll work on the Xbox One.

**Edit** and actually yes! It was free a few months back.

Cheers Mr Vision.

I've just checked my 360 games collection and I have a physical copy of 'Split/Second Velocity' - is that the same thing?

It is indeed! There was only ever one version so that'll work perfectly.

Get on it!

Has Hearty never played it either?!

I’ve a feeling he’ll enjoy this muchly (to a point, I don’t care much for ‘the Blue Shell effect’, the helicopter events or chasing the trucks with barrels flinging out the back).

I’ll tell you what I really like about this, the tracks. It reminds me of Burnout 3 (the best one) where each track is part of a bigger track that interweaves. So even when you’re on a brand new race you’ll ride down a section of track and be like ‘I know this bit’ which reduces the headache of blindly approaching some corners where you’ve got no idea what’s coming up.

Burnout 3 is barely the third-best Burnout.

Wrong.

Burnout Revenge > Burnout 3 > Burnout Paradise > Burnout 2 > Burnout

Although 3/Paradise could maybe be switched.

You missed Dominator.

Also: wrong. B3’s tracks are better than Revenge.

The original crash mode was the best thing about burnout, then they had to ruin it by making the car controllable after the crash. It was all downhill from there.

Dominator doesn't count as it wasn't by Criterion and was Sony only.

B3 had better tracks but for a pure adrenaline rush when you're properly zoned in, nothing can touch Revenge.

If you accept that Butnout 3 had better tracks you’ve got to accept that it’s the better racing game since 100% of what you’re doing is racing around tracks and the games are mechanically the same. Revenge has traffic checking but all that did was water down the challenge. B3 must be the better racer because you’ve got to laser focused on both sides of the road rather than just one!

Talking of adrenaline, The Canyon (available at about episode 9/10) is one of the best tracks I’ve played.

Taking the edge of the dam at a billion miles an hour knowing that some shithead is going to pop the floor right from underneath you is edge of the seat gaming.

And driving around the canyon where the crash barriers give way at the slightest nudge but still having to jostle for position is just glorious.

I can’t remember the last driving game I’ve actually wanted to sit and play since, probably, the last good Burnout.

I think the dam explosion/alt route might be the best thing in any racing game ever.

I just put the 360 disc for this into my XB1X and it said it needed to download a 7.3GB 'update', that must be the whole game, surely?

Hopefully it will run from the hard drive, in that case.

WE WILL FIND OUT SHORTLY. (Well, shortlyish, XB1 download speeds being what they are.)

That’s how backwards compatible 360 games work on the XB1. It doesn’t attempt to use the disc for anything other than a sort of licence key check.

Fair enough, that makes sense.

I think this is the first backwards compat game I've used a physical disc with, all the others were XBLA or digital downloads, from memory.

Smashing it out of the park again. This is on a 100Mb/s downstream link.

Both Xbox and PS seem to be terrible download speeds compared to Steam, for example.

You see, my Xbox One downloads at a fair old rate. Definitely in line with what Virgin promise.

Also, Sat.. If ever you want an online race, give me a shout. I'd happily play Split/Second with you. Me and my 3 friends would regularly play this online and it was great!

Post subject:  Re: Split/Second: From the makers of Pure- soon to be underrated

So I put a fair few hours into this yesterday.

Let's do the GOOD and the BAD. Starting with the BAD.

BAD - The framerate is awful, it seems to target 30FPS but doesn't get there all the time, and uses some weird sort of motion blur effect to try and mask the drops. It really does 'lurch' sometimes and the controls become like wading through treacle when it does, in a way that is genuinely unpleasant. Frankly, with any other game, this would have most likely been a deal breaker.

But.....

GOOD - Holy shitballs the game is frigging awesome!

It pretty much got me from the very first race. The tutorial is simple and effective, and it's quite refreshing to not have to remember a zillion different things you can do, with their associated buttons. It's just standard racing game controls and two extra buttons. I like.

Right from the off it's tough, which I also like. So many racing games seem to work on cruise control for far too long, whereas this game comes right out of the gates swinging. (I also liked this about Dangerous Driving.)

The Power Play mechanic is genius, it sounds like it would be ridiculously over the top and powerful, but in practice there's a real knack to using it effectively, and you need to learn what the various power plays around the track are, as it's very easy to completely whiff with them, or indeed, fuck yourself royally. It's not just a case of 'press the button when the icon flashes'.

The sound and music are great, I actually quite like the music and adjusted the balance a bit so the music stands out more than at the default volume levels. It fits the game rather well IMO.

Graphically it's very impressive, the level of visual fidelity is quite something, although clearly beyond what the 360 is really capable of, if there were a 1080p/60FPS remaster of this available for the XB1X, I'd drop £50 on that sucker in a heartbeat. Some of what the game does is right into sheer 'ZOMG DID YOU JUST FUCKING SEE THAT?' territory. I can't think of any other game where I've had to dodge a 747 crash landing into a runway.

The car handling is solid, nice drift mechanic that feels just right. The cars themselves are pretty good too, they all feel different to use and there's definitely some mileage in matching the car to the event.

So yes, this is a mighty fine game, and one which I am looking forward to firing up again this afternoon whilst Mrs Hearthly and Jnr are up at the in-laws.

And to think it's been sat in my 360 games collection for years, and I've never played it before! (I got the game off a mate who was retiring his 360, he literally just gave his games collection away to people in the office, and I grabbed Split Second, but for shame, I never so much as put the disc in my 360.)

eBay says you can buy a physical copy for £3-£4, I recommend that everyone who owns an XB1, but doesn't own this game, avails themselves of a copy.

(You can also buy it as a backwards compat digital download for £8.99.)

And me. I played it yesterday following the comments on here about it. Very good game, but I'm utterly hopeless at it - I think I've only won a couple of races so far.

It's been a games with gold before, I'm not sure if they do the same game twice?

Also, there are copies on eBay for literally £2.98.

Oh and hey right? What is the plot? I like the way the game puts you into this totally crazy world where destroying entire cities for a race is a standard thing, but doesn't even remotely try to explain it.

I watched the opening cinematic but that didn't explain anything.

It seems that the races are controlled by some sort of sinister director character (a bit like Manhunt), and since the races will involve loads of people dying and laying waste to hundreds of millions of dollars worth of cityscape, it must be some sort of dystopian near future?

If there is a plot, I missed it. But that's cool, some things don't need to be explained.

Oh look there's a PC version, that'll fix the one issue I actually with the game. £15.49 seems entirely reasonable.

EDIT - PC version is capped at 30FPS according to the reviews. In which case, no sale.

Some rival TV station bulldozes through the city and the announcer goes “Oh no it’s them”. Then “To Be Continued...”

If you don't have Game Pass, sign up for that 3 months for £1 offer and can get it that way.
