We have negative unemployment (there are more vacancies listed at the job centre than we have people signed on). There is still a work permit system in principle but it's very flexible and they're now actively talking about 'flipping' it so that the default position for employment here is that you don't need a work permit except in specific cases, rather than the other way around.

Seriously, we want everyone over here. If you're good with computer type stuff, even more so. (Finance skills are still in demand too, I believe.)

(You do still pay tax and NI, of course, but at the prevailing rates for the IOM, IIRC they're on the government's website. Worth taking into account when you're comparing salary packages.)

I wrote to some recruitment agencies there of late, but they were a bit weird in response. Not as weird as tne NHS which had a job that seemed great (forecasting demand for ambulances) and tbe pay looked ok. The increment was from X to 1.4X, but you could only get the higher than X if you were already in the NHS regardless of skills and experience so balls to that ludicrous practice.

I saw an IT job that was paying quite nicely and advertised as being in Birmingham, but in the small print it was actuallly on the IoM.
Guess they are trying hard to tempt people over there.

Check out the local job situation, you might be surprised. (We have lots of lawyers/advocates here, and plenty of old drystone walls too, miles and miles of them all over the place. So you might be alright on either/both counts :D)

Speaking personally, moving here permanently 21 years ago was one of the best choices I've ever made (admittedly out of a lifetime's record of many awful choices but some good ones also).

Being able to walk just 15 minutes from my office's front door, and be up over Douglas Head and down into a little secret(ish) cove simply never loses its magic for me. (Secret cove pictured behind me in the shot above, although there was actually a family down there today which is quite unusual and we all said good afternoon to each other.)

So by 'secret cove' you actually mean 'cove'? I don't do public coves, I'm out.

Hearthly, mate, come on. Mate. Don't encourage them - the best bit about Internet peoples is that they're on the Internet. Leave them there.

I count it as a blessing, that after 21 years living on this island with you, I have no recollection of ever, ever setting eyes on you. And we live in the same town. On the same street for a while. I can't take that chance with other Internet peoples.

I can understand that. How do they even work? Is it magnets? They look like they move too slowly to stay up so I'm not buying the 'physics' argument at all. They look like they could literally fall out of the sky at any moment.

But, enjoy your flight!

You know, after seven years, some of our family still can't work out how the time zones work.

The two most common questions (at least one is guaranteed in every phone call):
  • What time is it out there?
  • What's the weather like?

Author:  Mimi [ Thu Aug 31, 2017 6:41 ]
Post subject:  Re: GPOYW thread

My mother lives two hours away and asks about the weather during roughly 100% of phone calls. It's a built in reflex.
