Has anyone given this a bash yet? I've just played the trial and bought it soon after. It seems like ace fun. Definitely get the trial and see what you think. It's essentially a WWI tower defence game, but you can control individual units such as planes and machine gun nests, etc. It's all nicely stylised like a tabletop war game. It's good fun.

I saw a video or something of this, and am pleased it's a WW1 game. WW1 seems so peculiarly well suited to tower defense games I'm surprised this is the first big and proper one.

I just couldn't resist this one either. The style, presentation and soundtrack were ticking all the right boxes. Strafing the poor saps in your little toy fokker is lots of fun.

Hehe. I like mowing everyone down in the machine gun nest. Those bloody horses are a pain, though.

I'm glad to hear this is going down well, as I'm keen to try it so will sort the demo later.

Personally, I was sold when I saw some screenshots the other week, and one had a massive Zeppelin in it.

Played it last night. I have to admit, I swallowed a bit hard the first time I got into a Maxim gun and mowed down an entire battalion as soon as they climbed out of their trench.

It's certainly a very interesting concept. Do you get to construct your own mazes at all, or is it just a question of being given a preset layout and arranging your turrets accordingly?

The plane controls are AWFUL. You just can't turn quickly enough, and sometimes I find myself slowing down to strafe and my plane just immediately goes into death spiral that seems scripted and BOOM! No hope, I'm dead.

While I'm incredibly charmed by the presentation (the toy soldiers 'boxes' and the everything is so painstakingly designed to look like toys of the era) I don't know if it's 1200pts good. Certainly it hasn't grabbed me by the nards in the same way that Darwinia did.

I'm glad you like Darwinia, BTW.

And yeah, the plane controls are different again to every game ever and take some getting used to. I'm a few levels in and turret placement has always been in pre-set sections, there's no "trench building" from what I can see. Personally, I think that'd make it much too complicated, but I can see where you're coming from, especially as an RTS fan. But yeah, it becomes more about the weapon placement, which ones to buy, which ones to upgrade, which direction to point them in, etc. It's genuinely tactical in an obviously limited way.

I suppose it wouldn't really suit the rest of the game to have you building the usual flower of death trenches, yeah. But I can't spend 1200pts on this, especially not with Perfect Dark on the way.

Which is interestingly only 800pts! I'll be getting that, obv.

Just played me a bit of this... I like it! It's a bit manic and the controls might get a bit of getting used to, but it wasn't what I expected at all!

I'm not buying a tower defense game until Plants vs Zombies is finally released on bawks.

Played it again. It's so intrinsically tied to the WW1 setting I doubt either aspect of it would stand on its own. The interface is a bit too small, not as good as in Defense Grid. I only realized you could upgrade the towers by accident, for example.

I feel really guilty gassing the enemy soldiers.

A bit more luck with the plane, took out some of the tanks with it. A shame you might as well kamikaze it into something once you're out of bombs, though.

Will wait for it at a bargain price, I think.

When's a compilation of all EA's 'Strike' Games coming to XBLA then?

Just as long as they miss out Nuclear Strike.

I liked it on my new Playstation when I got it, but then my experience of Strike games previously was Desert Strike Gameboy which was like trying to control an Eve Online ship with Nintendo Bongos.

Jungle Strike's still the best for me. Urban Strike had potential with on-foot missions and motorbikes but if I remember rightly, it didn't quite come off.

What was wrong with nuclear strike?

Granted I never completed it, but it was flying around in a chopper with guys shouting "Over here" at you.

Maybe it was just the N64 version that was crap.

I just wrote a lengthy missive on the 16-bit Strike games which fucking vanished with a 'page cannot be found' error when I hit post.

I can't be bothered typing it all again, but suffice it to say:

Desert Strike great. Jungle Strike better some ways, worse in others (why couldn't you just fly over that bridge instead of using the stupid hovercraft? And the stealth fighter was sluggish as fuck). Urban Strike kept freezing, swapped for another copy which also froze, swapped it for Corpse Killer 32X (yes, I know).

couldn't resist it on saturday morning (especially after Thexboxvision twitter to me about it), since it ticks all the right boxes...

like to control the fokker, tried ot land it a few times, but i guess that's not possiblem although as a pure TD game it is not as good as the geo ones or pvz on the iphone, the combination with wii and semi arcady stuff is satisfiing, reminds me of ancient art of war in the skies on the miggy

Duh, MS just gave me a code for this - a good week late. I've already bought it so first person to drop me a PM (who doesn't own the game) can have it. No codes for chums! You have to be a Beexer who wants to play it.

EDIT: GONE!

Remember, you can change the angle of your mega cannons. I found this to be particularly helpful, and I killed the Tsar before it even got to the road bit. Just make sure all of them can always hit the tank and they're up to Level 2 and you'll be laughing.

My what?
I'm only on the second (third? I've just got the gas gun) level.

One of the few benefits of being unemployed! :P

The game however is might fun, I keep forgetting to put enough defences right near the toy box and have to frantically build stuff when they break through
