For low power stuff I found running a laptop as a media server was ok. They tend to break after a while mind but it ran at around 40-60w when idle.... however I purchased a ReadyNas which is far superior for functionality and redundancy and as you say does not cost much to run and you can schedule power off during periods you don't need it on.
