So, I've got a call to do at work, and I have some log files to look at. The log files contain about a days worth of events. But the problem is intermittant, perhaps only happening once or twice. So I sent the call back with the following note:

Me wrote:
We will need SPECIFIC DETAILS of the transactions that have "issues" and what those "issues" are.

2 hours later I get this back:

Getting comms failed

That's it.

2 hous for 3 words. 3 words that don't help me narrow it down to a specific time or transaction.

Take a screenshot of the original email, draw a crude red circle around the captialised words with arrows and stuff. Then send that.

I did think of doing that, but instead I worked out how many transactions there were, and the time frame given, and then asked for the same info again.

I bet I get back "dunno" or something.

If it's any consolation, the project which I've been on for the last few weeks, which has involved me substantially replacing a near-decade old system with a new densly-layered AJAX system, with no spec but my own ('Do what you think is best'*), has been "The tables don't look right". I've tried to get it reclassified but apparently "That would draw too much attention to what you're doing."

What? Oh, well, my boss' boss has a belief that any kind of bug-fixing should take no more than about 40 minutes. And anything else is just padding or being over-detailed. Project work such as this, eh, maybe half a day if you think it's a really big job. "The tables don't look right", then, is a vaguely worded and boss-boring subterfuge. For fuck's sake.
* We have literally millions of pounds pouring through our systems every single day. My sphincter has never been tighter, these last few weeks of work.

Just had another one from a different person.

Another analyst wrote:
Please can you find the data from between 06:00 and 09:30 on the 25th of April

So he brings me back data starting at 10:30 on the 25th of April!

At least, I suppose it was the correct day!

3rd line support for a company that sells tills and stock management back office equipment (ie computers that act as tills and stock control)

I support the tills part. so shift data, eft data, bug fixes, running stuff through code, data fixes, and more and more getting annoyed that people can't think for themselves as they bring back the wrong thing time and time again.

That’s the problem with email. Pick up the phone and belittle him; make them suffer; make them cry!

I'm working from home today, so I'd have to call our public customer services number (as he doesn't have a direct dial) I really don't want to do that...

I get that occasionally, then they ask when it'll be fixed and I say "Dunno".
