I'm thinking of getting a contract for work purposes where I can use a phone for internet stuff and get pretty much free calls to O2 phones and not really anything else. I want use this service to connect my phone to my laptop to use that in an internet fashion as well.

I'm hoping to spend around £20 a month and expect I'm quite likely to really be looking at O2 as provider.

Anyone know if O2 offer such a thing?

Currently I'm using two phones, one is doing internet stuff and the other is for calls (I spend around £5 a month on pay as you go calls). I'm paying £15 a month for mobile internet.

First thing to check is if you have the type of phone that allows tethering to devices (ie. it acts as a modem for laptops, etc).

A quick peek at their website suggests that the cheapest plan o2 do that fits your criterea is £32.50 a month (Online 25 + unlimited web "bolt on").
Are you eligible for a business phone?

I don't know if I'm eligible for business phone. But £32.50 is too much. I'm paying a lot less than that now. I've got a phone already that does internets and tethering, that's why I'm asking about it. It's currently on 3 but I'm hoping I can get it unlocked. It should still work with the 3 software, right? (It's an s2 skype phone which is a bit crap but I got it in cheap at the stall from a lunatic (who keeps buying phones and then selling them again, he bought one from Tesco, added £40 credit and then sold it to me for about £5) and I've got used to working with it now)

The contract must not exceed £22 a month

EDIT: I must also point out I did have a look at the O2 site and I couldn't really figure out what the hell it was on about.

Can you do without unlimited O2 - O2 calls?

The T&Cs of the Web Bolt-On state it's for on-phone use only; they don't want to let people use it as a cheap 3G dongle. I don't know if this restriction is policed or enforced.

I can do without unlimited O2 calls. I probably only use maybe 100-200 minutes of O2 calls a month. Does it say how much data they allow in that? I suppose I could look it up but I've got you working for me now

I'm pretty sure there's a separate tethering bolt-on.

It's all very complicated. I may be best off sticking to what I have at the minute. "Take two phones into the office? ..Um yes actually."

can't you swap a phone for a 3g card instad?

You can get a better deal than they quote on the web site or in store.

The trick is to find the best deal from a competitor or a reseller, and phone them up and ask them to beat it.

That way, I got 600 minutes, 500 texts and unlimited internet for £20 a month, and a free phone on an 18 month contract.

Quote that at them, say "I'd quite like to stay with/go with O2, but I am probably going to go with the best offer, can you do anything better than that?"

I have an O2 SIM-only contract for £17.50/m. It's the cheap-ass £10 basic contract (120 mins talking I think), but with the aforementioned web bolt-on. It's unlimited, as far as I can tell. I mean, I'm not torrenting TV series on it, but it's fine for regular email/Twitter/FaceBook etc.

Just seen that I sent way too many texts this month, though.

Note that for £2.50 per month more, you get the bolt-on bundled in, and get a lot more minutes and texts.
