Same thing, surely? If consumers don't care about updates to existing phones, they're not going to care about the nonupgradable Lumias in the channel now either, and will go on buying them.

Those who care will wait for a WP8 handset. Those who don't will carry on buying Nokia handsets now.

Those who have waited won't be affected by WP8 not being back-portable, because they've waited for a WP8 device. Those who don't wait will be affected by WP8 not being back-portable, but they won't know or care that they aren't getting WP8. Nokia will see a sales drop, but not a massive one, and everybody's happy.

That is what I meant.

And, as someone who weeps into his keyboard as users of things he's written "use technology", I stand by that comment.

I downloaded a fun looking pinball game last night called Dr Pickaxe.

The thing is, it has the screen in landscape mode rather than portrait. It seemed rather odd.

That is odd, but Devil's Crash was landscape wasn't it?

Has anyone tried using the Internet Sharing option on the Windows Phone?

Every time I turn mine on, it tells me there's no current internet connection and won't do anything.

How odd?

I can't get it to work with anything on my home network at all (Remote Control, uTorrent controller, etc). It's shit.

My iPad just works.

Ha, lookit that! I'd not tried it til now, but it works (for my work laptop, anyway). It's probably a switch your carrier has turned off or something. I'm on Orange.

Why would you want to do remote control over a mobile connection? Or have you thrown in random (valid!) gripes about missing apps?

I'm on Orange too?

I go into Settings---> Internet sharing----> Turn on

And it won't. Is that what you're doing?

Worked great on my HD7, doesn't exist on my Lumia 800. For some unknown reason.

Random gripe about non-functionality within existing apps, sadly.

Yup. Not there. The updates are device specific, irritatingly.

I have the Lumia 800 and the update came through. I'm on Orange but I have a feeling I didn't wait till the update message appeared on the phone. I think I did it through Zune.

Took ages for the latest update to appear on mine, but a colleague on O2 got it even later.

But yeah, Settings -> Internet Sharing -> On -> Shared internet.

First WP8 phone announced from Samsung, the Ativ S

http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/29/32770 ... ws-phone-8

Specs look like a pretty nice jump from the WP7 spec:

1.5GHz dual core snapdragon
4.8" 720p Super AMOLED
1GB RAM
8MP Camera
16/32Gb internal + MicroSD
2300mAh battery

And it looks a fuck of a lot like an iPhone 4, so it'll probably never see the light of day.

Yes, but released after the fucking great Samsung-Apple patent ruling of earlier this week rather than before.

It's just a Galaxy Note/SII with a Windows logo shoved onto the middle of the Home button; so, yeah, their 'last-gen' design adapted very slightly for WinPhone. I'm surprised they didn't use the newer SIII/Note 2 style if they weren't going to put any effort in to differentiate it from their existing products because at least that's newer (and might survive The Wrath of Apple into the bargain).

That earpiece looks so awkward with the Samsung logo shoved in there. All the proportions look really off.

It looks fine to me, but then I've been using a phone of one type or another with that exact design for about a year and half now I suppose.

The Lumia 920 looks like it's probably nice enough to secure my upgrade slot come January.

Looks interesting, but will probably suffer the same problems WP7 handsets did - lack of software support.

I decided to add work's Exchange as a manual-update account.

Cunting thing made me set an unlock passcode, didn't it.

Still, reckon a Lumia 920 is my next phone. Or whatever WP is best in 16 months. Something about WP7.5 just... gels.

Don't know if anyone is interested but the Nokia Lumia 800 is going to be £150 on pay as you go on Orange in the next couple of weeks.

I heard that from a friend who works there.. it might be a limited deal though.

Thanks, The Vision. TheVision. Oh, that joke doesn't work with your name.

I hope that if you plug any non-BBD headphones into it, you get a booming 'LISTEN WITH BEATS BY DRE' cutting in every few seconds, like a rap promo.

I was trying to figure out how to transfer the photos and videos from my HD7 to my Mac today, when I found Windows Phone 7 Mac Connector in the Mac App Store, and it's a really good bit of software.

A new Twitter client has appeared on the marketplace. It's called Cowlick and for the time being, it's free.

I've had a quick play with it this morning and it seems quite good. It's not overloaded with features but it seems to have everything you'd need. It'll be a paid for app soon so get it while you can.

Oh yeah, this thread - Lumia owners can get a go of the Beta of Xpress, which does server-side processing to reduce the data transferred to your phone, like Opera's Turbo. Seems alright; slows things down on my wifi, but I imagine it'll speed things up on 3G connections.

Looks a bit like it's a non-IE browser they're using, oddly.

Windows Phone users, I am joining your ranks!

I shall soon be the happy owner of a Lumia 800 jobbie, via Santa and my g/f. I know it's not the latest model etc, but I care not - it does everything I want and need, looks lovely, and is now a bargain-like £150 on PAYG (on O2 anyway, though I'm sure others are much the same).

Really excited about it to be honest, as you can't beat a shiny new gadget, eh? I won't deny, the main draw for me is being able to secure extra Cheevos on the games available. I don't really give a toss about apps in general, and apart from the games, I just want a cool phone for texting.

I've had an Android phone the past year and never really liked it. To be fair this is more down to the actual phone (a Sony-something) than Android itself - the on-screen keyboard is too small and fiddly and it drove me nuts trying to text because the accuracy just wasn't there.

I have no interest in an iPhone as they're overpriced, besides I already have an iPod Touch so an iPhone would not feel new to me anyway.
