Fuck me, the NAS has come a long way since I bought my MyBookworld back in 2009. The new Synology one I've just got has a full Windows style GUI and can max out the new gigabit switches with transfer speeds of over 100MB/s. Impressive stuff! The MyBookworld still works perfectly (which is pretty good for 10 years of 24/7 uptime), but it's out of capacity now, I've replaced it with an 8TB Synology model. I've got a plinky plonky old NAS but god, I love it. I put two 1tb drives in mine. One for films/TV and the other for music. Both are about 30% full I did have an issue a week back where MS decided to stop SMB1 drives from being seen (it's all very complicated and way out of my realm of knowledge as I hate networking) but I managed to fix that. Not replacing all of the time it still chugs along. Had to change my BT internet today though, bit bummed about that. 1.25 miles away there is no fibre. Thankfully because it's a trust property I can get out of my existing contract (£58 a month) and have switched to the best "copper" as they call it, plan I could get. That means a drop to 17mb max (about 8 from what I have read ffs) and no more 4k Netflix and etc. The good part? it's £25 a month cheaper at £33. I'll be needing that, so any save is welcome. I managed to keep the nice PVR they sent me too, which I was chuffed about because it's a Humax in disguise. |

Noticed these extension lead boxes on Amazon a few weeks ago and grabbed one for the stereo and one for the PC. Do note they don't make one big enough for 6 gang, but that is a bit extreme. Then again compared to the 4 extension leads I had before all on the floor it's definitely tidier...  I found it far more handy for hiding power supplies. The lid is very well vented. I decided to screw and 3m tape mine on as such. Et voila !  I can now get to the skirting and vacuum all the way back to the wall. Not used the PC much yet, waiting to get my new chair over tomorrow. |

Greetings from 2008. As I discovered from an ancient post, my neglected pc has the following spec (well that's what I bought after this post): Gigabyte GA-EP45-DS3R Intel Core 2 Duo, E8400 500 GB Western Digital WD5000AACS 2GB (2x1GB) Corsair TwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800) Also, as mentioned elsewhere in that thread, I'm rocking a Geforce 7600GT (which I think I upgraded at some point, but whatever I upgraded to broke, so I threw the 7600 back in there). Now, I'm well aware that I'm posting in the gaming hardware thread, but all I'm planning on doing is bringing it kicking and screaming into the 2010s. Perhaps replace the mish-mash of hard drives with an ssd and a bigger hd for storage. My understanding is that I can drop a newer graphics card onto that motherboard and it will still work. So, er, recommend me stuff, I guess? I've seen GT 1030s hovering around the 70 quid mark, is that good? Sorry, I'm not even sure what I'm asking here, but I wanted to give you all the opportunity of recommending me stuff with far more fans and leds than I could possibly want. |

I wouldn't even remotely bother trying to upgrade that, everything about it is awful. Can you afford to spend £500-£600? You can get a modestly capable brand new PC (with a bit of gaming ooomph) for around that money. In fact, you'd probably spend most of that amount trying to bring that PC up to some sort of usable standard. |

I can, but I don't want to. It's sat unused for many years, and, after a false dawn a couple of years ago, might now be serving a purpose as a plex server. An ssd might be nice so it turns on a bit faster. I've also got some weird obsession with replacing all the old consoles I don't have time to play on with a machine that might be able to emulate some of them (that I still wouldn't have time to play). My attempts at using Retroarch failed miserably on anything post-PSX, which I'm suspecting is down to my prehistoric graphics card. But thanks for taking my admittedly vague question, and turning it into a whole new PC. I'd have been disappointed in anything less. |

Well by far and away the best single thing you can do to any old PC/laptop is put an SSD in it. That board should support SATA SSDs although it might need some BIOS upgrades and or trickery with the settings. Beyond that you'll want more RAM (4GB is about your minimum really). Graphics card wise the 1030 scarcely qualifies as a graphics card, a 1650 is half decent and draws all its power from the PCIe bus. If you don't want to stretch to a 1650, you should be able to get a 1050 or 1050Ti for fairly cheap. The CPU is kind of OK, as long as you don't want to chuck anything in the way of modern games at it. (Which pretty expect a quad core as a starting point these days.) |

Turns out it's got 4GB already (I noticed it had 4 sticks in when I was poking around in it yesterday, so must've upgraded that at some point in the last 10 and a half years). I could spend £150-odd on a new graphics card, but to be honest I was just after something with a hdmi port so I could plug it into the tv (and I've misplaced the dvi-vga adaptor I "borrowed" from work). |

It never occurred to me that it would have an issue with SSDs. If it boots from a SATA hard drive (which it does), can I assume it will be fine with a SATA SSD? |

Yeah, that should be fine. SATA is SATA, as far as the BIOS is concerned. It might only have SATA 1, which IIRC runs at 1.5 gig, rather than the newer, faster variants. I think it’s forwards and backwards compatible but obviously a modern SSD might be bottlenecked by the port. |

It should do but on boards of that vintage there were sometimes gotchas, I'm trying to recall my own experiences with a board of that era. Also, what OS are you on? Win 7 didn't always play the best with SSDs (although that's something they may have fixed with updates over the years). |

Mobo specs say: 6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors (SATAII0, SATAII1, SATAII2, SATAII3, SATAII4, SATAII5) supporting up to 6 SATA 3Gb/s devices Support for SATA RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10 So, I guess that's all good (although I've no idea what kind of speeds to expect from an SSD - but I'm coming from 2008, so anything should be an improvement). I am running Windows 7, although I'm guessing a new drive means a new install, so the world is my oyster on that front. Perhaps I'll spend a few days getting frustrated with some kind of linux variant, before getting fed up and installing Windows. |

That might be handy, although now I've found the setting that tells it not to transcode local files,the network seems to be the bottleneck (my laptop acting as the server on wifi struggles to pull something from the NAS, then send it to the tv), so all of this is because I'm too lazy to plug a network cable into my laptop when watching something. |

It's all in a huge case, so that shouldn't be a problem, it's just the board layout has the pci-e slot just beneath the level where the ram slots end, so anything on top of the card might get in the way. Looks like everything is underneath though, so should be fine. |

If you are comfortable removing two plastic tabs from the CPU socket edge with a scalpel there are a few later quad core xeons that should work in that board, and should be peanuts to buy. IIRC they should be socket 771? (Going from top of head as on phone) and Google should help you determining which are which and whether your board is compatible. Failing that a core 2 quad would be worth doing. |

I've not done lots of homework but I thought the sticker was to force up the FSB? I could be wrong there. I just know it's a popular way of breathing life into what is pretty much bin fodder otherwise. |
