I've got an i5-7400 in my machine, how does that stack up again an i7 4770K? The latter is the recommended level for the new Tomb Raider game, hence why I'm looking into it.

ETA: Ah, I realise now what the four digit numbers there represent so I should be fine given the three generations between the two!

Might want to check some benchmarks - that quoted i7 seems to have surprisingly high benchmarks and residual prices for an older chip.

You don't need a super quick CPU for gaming really you don't. Just 4 cores with a reasonable IPC and around 4ghz is more than enough. The important part is the GPU.

My 14 core only runs at around 3.4ghz on the first four cores and gaming is amazing.

Scan emailed me yesterday to say super sorry apologies, but the PC build is on a two day delay due to a backlog of build orders.

I used the opportunity to bump the RAM from 3000MHz to 3466MHz. (And change it to an RGB kit, as well.)

Twinkly lights!

Ryzen really likes fast RAM and that should give it a little bump in performance.

Be careful with that, unless Ryzen + has better memory support over 3200. You may find you will hit a wall at 3200mhz, unless the controller has improved. That was about where Ryzen (1) brick walled any way, any further showed diminishing returns.

IIRC I have XSPC coolers on my ram. Pretty sure, but can't see it atm as it is under all of the water cooling. Talking of which I am still planning/drawing etc but am going to have this made up for the rad.

Image

As well as a plethora of other stuff. Going to run hard tubing in parts of the rig, as long stretches of hose look daft. I got this too, this should be fun !

Coz it's cool. HTH HAND

It's even better than you think. You can now get dummy RAM sticks that are nothing but the LED modules to fill up the empty slots.

It gives pc gamers something that is fun to look at whilst they run yet another benchmark to make sure they are hitting 60fps at 100 degrees. Games never get played on PCs so these lights are all the fun they have.

It is quite pretty as it goes. Sadly test versions were a bit fragile.. I hope they changed that before launch.

I don't want any RGB inside my case. The one I am modding has plenty outside for me.

I have PC envy!

Another masterful build from Scan, splendid cable management. Even the hard drives go at the back of the motherboard now, who knew?

I have to be honest the case is rather bigger than I thought it would be.....

It's not been turned on yet, have to get family WoW done first.

Mine is going well. Started cutting up the chassis yesterday.

Image

It now has modern manners. I can fit a rad in the roof, one in the front and have far more space now. Cut a vent for the PSU.

Image

I said no RGB but I couldn't resist this thing, it's rather special.

Image

Amazingly it all still works lol.

Image

Oh and lots and lots of this.

Yup they're very good at cooling too. Go AMD.

Rig looks great. LOL @ the storage though. I don't have that much in 5 PCs a 1X and a NAS :D

That said I have never gotten into video editing, which I hear can chomp the TBs away.

Ever since Mrs Hearthly discovered Windows 10's built in DVR she's been chewing up disk space at a frightening rate of knots. Plus Jnr likes her to DVR Minecraft every time Jnr releases one of her 'expansions' on our server.

And then on top of that Mrs Hearthly is now doing video editing on the resulting footage and making her own movies.

Can't knock her really as it's all fun and creative, and Jnr loves to get involved as well (as a rather narky director at times :D ). But as you can imagine, it's ruinous on disk usage and she's currently got two external drives hanging out of her PC. (Plus she's capping out on her RAM and CPU as her PC works really hard at times.)

The new PC will be:

500GB M2 SSD - OS, apps, My Docs (her My Docs now runs to about 60GB)
1TD SATA SSD - Games
2 x 4TB HDDs - Mirrored data drives for all her 'stuff', I'll also back the data up to one of the external drives which will be re-provisioned for this purpose

Arguably the PC as a whole is a bit over-specced for what she needs right now, but I'm hoping it'll have 5+ years in without breaking a sweat.

Burns them to DVD then flogs them down the market. Tax free of course ;)

Finished cutting and grinding earlier. It's now had a bath, been dried, and masked for painting.

So here's a thing, I was continuing with setting up Mrs Hearthly's new PC last night, and it was time for the Office install. I've got an Office 2010 install and a legit key from forever ago, but it's very long in the tooth now, needs 85,000 CRITICAL UPDATES I AM REBOOTING YOUR PC RIGHT NOW when installed, and isn't going to be supported forever - so I decided to investigate Office 365.

Turns out that for £79.99 you can get the Office 365 'Family Pack', which gets you five full licences for Office 365 (for five different people, across multiple devices) AND 1TB of OneDrive storage for each of the people it's shared with.

Since I'm going to try and get Mrs Hearthly's and Jnr's stuff up in the cloud anyway going forward (still augmented with local backups), I thought I'd go for it.

One PayPal transaction later I had Office 365 installing on my PC and Mrs Hearthly's new PC (I had to generate an invite link and email it to Mrs Hearthly), and our OneDrive available storage changed from 5GB to 1TB (after a log out and log in, natch, this is Microsoft after all).

I'll also use one for Jnr.

So we'll get three full Office 365 licences and 3TB (!) of cloud storage for £79.99 per year. (Obviously if you max it out that'd be five full Office Licences and 5TB of cloud storage.) And just for the record it is the full Office suite with full versions of all the applications.

Google want £79.99 annually just for 1TB of cloud storage.

Quite bargain-tastic, I thought.

I have a Home subscription too (although it's £61.99 on Amazon, not £79.99). I used to use dodgy copies of Office, but these days I'd rather have legit software so I don't begrudge paying that per year to have Office on desktop and laptop.

I paid about £20 for an official version of Office 2013 through work a few years ago and that's done me ever since. I often think about singing up again but I don't think I'd get my money's worth out of it.

I pay £7.99 a month for Office 365. It's pretty good value considering I use it for my freelance work.

TBH the Office licences are almost just the icing on the cake, 3TB of cloud storage for £80 per year is the meat and veg of the deal for me. (I find the Google 'Office' apps are fine for my needs, for example. Mrs Hearthly uses Word a lot but in fairness has never complained about Word 2010 not doing what she wants.)

I get the single Office 365 which costs £59 a year

Don't need the 5 install package as we get that at work so if I ever need anymore installs I can use these

My dad had an email from MS 2 weeks ago saying that he was going to soon have 5 installs of Office on his 365 (he currently has the same package as I do)

So guess they will be pulling the single one and making us pay £20 a year more for office installs we won't use. :)

So second gen Ryzen is quite a bit better than first gen. My 1700X is on an all-core overclock of 3.8GHz, which isn't bad. Mrs Hearthly's 2700X however is just left entirely at stock, with the new X470 chipset and CPU boosting technologies left to do their own thing.

In lightly threaded workloads it'll boost 2-3 cores up to 4.35GHz and keep them there all day, and in a full-on stress test (100% sustained load across all 8/16 cores/threads) it'll still manage to maintain an all-core boost of 4GHz.

The stock cooler is impressive as well, (and it looks pretty!), managing to keep temperatures under control very well and pretty much remaining silent whilst doing it. (The two 140mm case fans are probably a little bit louder when the system is under load, effectively masking out the CPU cooler's fan.)

Intel are due to hit back soon with their mainstream 8-core CPUs, but in the meantime AMD have managed to get the drop on them in fairly impressive style. (And the 2700X costs less than an 8700K, and you don't need to spend another £50 on a cooler capable of preventing it throttling the fuck out of itself.)

Intel are due to hit back soon with their mainstream 8-core CPUs, but in the meantime AMD have managed to get the drop on them in fairly impressive style. I read that Intel were having hard times manufacturing, so DRAM prices were going to fall. IDK how much truth there was to it, but I hope there's at least some. RAM has been so cripplingly expensive over the past few years I've hardly bought any. Which is a shame, as I would like 32gb of faster RAM, but I just ain't feeling the stupid prices.

Here is my current project.

I was kinda thinking of modding my sound card to fit with the vertical mount but no luck. Sadly due to the water fittings there is no space behind the GPU. So I got this.

Which is basically like an external D2X. I have a few sound cards, but the D2X matches the headphones I use here better.

I might have gotten a bit carried away and it might now have a 7" HDMI LCD in the floor....

What is it used for? this.

When I bought my PA3 (a small computer that controls pumps, fans etc) I got a license for the software. I never did finish it (it would probably be a day's work to build my front end) but I will now. So as frivolous as it seems it will be incredibly handy.
